The Frederick Scanner Covered by the Frederick News-Post

I’m late on this, but wanted to say congrats to Pete Raumann for getting a write-up in Frederick News-Post for The Frederick Scanner. This site is a great Frederick resource! If you haven’t heard of The Frederick Scanner before here is a snippet about the site from the FNP article:

During the historic snowstorms that rolled through the East Coast in 2010, some would say Pete Raumann had too much time on his hands.

Raumann would simply reply, “It was maddening to be stuck in the house. I just wanted to know what was going on.”

During those storms, Raumann created what’s become his most prized hobby, and one that’s gained droves of followers from Frederick residents.

The staging of computer servers, antennas and a radio scanner formed Frederick Scanner, a website and mobile application to provide streaming audio from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services and Highway Services radios. The stream does not include the Frederick Police Department’s encrypted radio. The service, now in its third year, also shows live traffic webcams of major Frederick roads.

His intent, he said, has been to provide the public with as much emergency response information as possible, so that they know what’s going on when “a fireman is running down the street. That’s why it’s there.”

Zoning Change for Frederick Towne Mall Property Approved

From the Frederick News-Post:

After hearing more than an hour of impassioned public comment Thursday, the city’s Board of Aldermen voted 5-0 to rezone the Frederick Towne Mall property.

The rezoning will allow Rockwood Capital, which owns the 20 acres on U.S. 40, to move forward with a proposal to bulldoze the nearly vacant mall and build a Wal-Mart. The developers will need to bring forward a site plan before finalizing its plan.

A Movie in the Frederick Towne Mall

Looks like the plan for to make a movie in the old Frederick Towne Mall hit a snag:

Hey MAULERS fans…Long night…spent four hours at a city hall hearing on the mall redevelopment project and hoped to hammer out a deal with the owners of Frederick Towne Mall to film MAULERS there…no such luck. Guess it’s back to the drawing board. Really hoping to make this project in Frederick, Maryland, but forced to open the search to other vacant malls around the country.

I hope they let the movie go forward before the mall is demolished forever. It’s be a great send off for the old place.
