Downtown Flooding

In case you missed it, the rain we had on Tuesday really socked Downtown Frederick:

Some businesses also sustained major damage:

Berberich estimated he lost close to $50,000 of inventory, including records, display cases and stereo equipment. His store, along with those on either side — Whidden Willow and an office of Verizon Wireless — were hardest hit by the overnight rainstorm, although others also reported minor damage, said Kara Norman, executive director of the Downtown Frederick Partnership.

Berberich said the shop’s location — below street level in a valley, with Patrick Street sloping upward on either side — made him and his neighbors prime targets for the torrential water that accumulated Tuesday night.

If you want to help contact the Downtown Frederick Partnership or make a donation to the shops directly effected.

Festa Italiana Frederick, 2015

Habitat for Humanity Frederick county announces third annual Festa Italiana Frederick to benefit neighborhood revitalization efforts

festaOn Saturday, May 30 the Frederick County Maryland community will come together to celebrate over two decades of providing affordable housing for families in need. The 3rd Annual Festa Italiana event will be held at the Rose Hill Manor Park where an authentic Italian village festival atmosphere will be recreated for the public to immerse themselves into the sights, sounds, and aromas of an Italian countryside neighborhood.

The funds raised will support the organization’s mission of providing housing for low-income families and continue its work on the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative that works within the second most impoverished areas of Frederick County aiding young families and the elderly by transforming their neighborhoods into safe communities.

Maria Giovanna Galasso, Event Chairwoman, said “Habitat for Humanity isn’t just about building houses it’s also about “building” neighborhoods and fostering this same awareness in our own hometowns. The Revitalization Initiative has been able to change the face of communities and the lives of the families who live there. City neighborhoods are what make a city. Happy neighborhoods are what make a happy community. Our hope is that Festa Italiana will inspires every one who attends to support HFHFC in creating beautiful neighborhoods in our communities so we can all live La Bella Vita.”

Since 1993, Frederick Habitat has built or renovated 35 homes, transforming the lives of 116 adults and children, and have mobilized more than 4,500 volunteers, and trained partner families in budgeting, home repair, safety and maintenance. Habitat homes are scattered throughout Frederick County, Maryland in the Middletown, Brunswick, Frederick City, Thurmont, Emmitsburg, and Buckeystown communities.

“For twenty-two years, Frederick County volunteers have turned out in impressive numbers to help us give hope to families who are desperately in need of affordable and safe housing,” said Ron Cramer, Executive Director. “Our organization is very fortunate to have these dedicated volunteers to raise funds, help build or improve homes, work with partner families, and serve on committees. These same volunteers help make it possible for the Festa to happen. It’s a family day to enjoy the beautiful Italian life in a picturesque setting.”

This year’s Festa will feature a performance by The Sicilian Tenors, once described by the late Joan Rivers as “The Three Tenors meets the Rat Pack”.

The Sicilian Tenors performance will start at 6:00 p.m. Admission to Festa Italiana includes the performance.

Festa Italiana will feature a variety of delicious authentic homemade Italian food and desserts, a wine and beer garden, a wood fired pizza oven, a gelato truck. Fun for all ages with Bocce Ball, Grape Stomping, and a children’s field where kids will enjoy Arts and Crafts, Zumba Kids, Soccer Skills, Story Time with author Shannon Jones, and much more. The adults can indulge on homemade biscotti served in the Italian Cultural Tent while enjoying slide shows and live presentations. Cast your vote at the Annual Sauce Taste off and stroll through the Italian Market. Cooking Demos and Italian Karaoke will complete the fun day. Live music through the day will be provided by The Monaldi Brothers who have gained widespread fame and popularity within the Italian community throughout the area, with a repertoire of classic Italian favorites. The i-Talian the band will hit the stage with a repertoire of Italian pop-rock form the ‘60s to the present.
