  1. Has anyone had a water softner installed? We just moved to a house with a well, and the water is extremely hard. I have found seemingly suitable ones on Lowes, and Home Depot, however I am leary of using them as im not positive it will fix out extremely hard water. I have found several dealers in the area, but am concerned about spending a fortune, and being up sold to death. Any thoughts?

    • We have one, although I never needed on when we lived in Frederick, but we do have one in now. When we did look around, albeit in another county, we were not upsold, we told them what we had to spend and that was that. I can’t vouch for the ones at home depot, but going to a good dealer should help. We did end up getting ours for free from someone in Frederick who didn’t need one so I can’t vouch for Home Depot ones. Maybe that one was from Home Depot, I don’t know.

Our faucets were dripping green water from the water corroding the pipes, toilets were pretty much ruined and a pipe busted from pin hole damage a few years back, so we had pretty harsh water. We got the water tested after installation and it was normal.

  2. Can anyone recommend a storage facility in the area for a travel trailer camper? Seems to be a lot out there but wanted one with a good reputation. Thanks!

    • I have a pop up camper that I store at Frederick Self Storage and have done so for years. I’ve never had any problems, they are reasonable and nice to work with.

    • We keep our pop up at Bowman Plains Storage on English Muffin Way. I’ve read complaints about them. I have to say we’ve never had a problem with them, but then we follow the rules: get in, get your RV, get out. No dawdling, no mechanical work on it, no using the storage parking space to cover/uncover it. If it’s covered we tow it out, park just outside the gates and uncover it – same if we need to put the cover back on – do it outside the gates then tow it in. They have security cameras, and insurance/liability rules that they have to follow. The trailer has been there for 3 1/2 years now, at $55/mo. Paved parking space. If we need to do work on it that is going to take some time we bring it home. Our HOA doesn’t allow them to be here more than 36 hours so we just have to plan our time to get it done. There is a big parking lot across from the storage facility that is empty and unused on the weekends and we’ve taken the trailer over there to take off the tires and put new ones on. They told us that RV owners often use the lot to do work on their vehicles.

    • Finally! I am curious to see what they offer since I live near by.
On a different topic, I saw a blowup gorilla figurine (which I assume was some sort of advertisement) in the parking lot of the former Pier 1 on 40. There was a sign too but I couldn’t read it. Anyone know?

    • Thanks for the update, looking forward to checking it out. Have we been waiting for 2 years since they first announced it, or does it just seem that long?

      • Just stopped by the new G Mart and I liked what I saw. It was PACKED and the check out lines were insane, so I would recommend waiting if you want to go. For the most part, it reminded me of the H-Mart asian/ethnic grocery stores in Northern Virginia. Great deals on produce and a wide selection of hard to find ethnic items with some “regular” items like ketchup, soda, etc. I heard someone express disappointment that they have no bakery. It looks like they ship in the baked goods but don’t make them onsite. I plan to go back again when the excitement dies down.

      • I stopped by G-Mart too. They carry durian (!), and multiple brands of various Asian, Indian and other ethnic products. Didn’t buy anything because it was so packed. What I didn’t get was why, on my way OUT, the greeter handed me a box containing disposable rubber gloves. Huh?

        Like

      • I just go my free disposable gloves too. Kind of an unusual thing, but I liked it- I imagine we’ll actually use them at some point.

I have to say the cashier was extremely competent at GMart. He was lightning fast and had all the produce codes memorized, even though he probably has never seen some of these items before three days ago. We also left without one of our bags and he ran it out to us in the parking lot. Very impressed! As I said, this place really improves our grocery situation in Frederick (and it was already pretty good with Wegmans, Common Market, MOM, Aldi, and Giant Eagle.

  4. Verizon FIOS.

I have been searching around the internet for a more definitive answer to the Frederick, MD FIOS question and as of late… have found no answer.

I live in the newly built Cannon Bluff neighborhood and as part of the construction, they placed a conduit to my house for fiber to be run at a later date. A few months later I notice Verizon trucks in and around our neighborhood digging up lawns and retro-fitting some of the older construction with conduits as well. This led me to believe that maybe soon we would see adds in our mail boxes for special deals on FIOS.

Now I have been watching this conversation for some time. I have found that there are people on all sides and i’m honestly am really interested in finding out when we will break this relative monopoly that Comcast has in this area. Satellite isn’t for everyone, so what other options do we have….

As early as last year I found myself in Mr Blaine Youngs Cab and he had mentioned that Verizon just hasn’t found Frederick, MD profitable enough yet to come here. I have spoken to other sources that have said that the Franchise Taxes that Frederick, MD would put on Verizon would be cost inhibitive to the process. What’s the real answer and if it is our own county government getting in the way of this, what can we do to help push this along.

    Sound off Frederick..

  5. Walked into the FSK Mall today, the hallway where the laser tag place is, and there’s a swimming school for kids now, on the left side. Very odd to see in-ground swimming pools in there.

    • I’ve been searching since yesterday…closest I’ve found is the Gaithersburg 14 Cinemas showing the fight for $25 per ticket. Called BWW, Glory Days, Crusaders…no hits. Someone with a home theater should start a PPV boxing club and charge $10 a head.

      • Supposedly Hard Times in Germantown for $10 and no cover for Hooters in Rockville. I was hoping to watch it in Frederick though. I just can’t bring myself to waste $65 plus however much else in “fees” to order it without some people to share the cost (I started too late and only found one taker). Searching now for a free link. That’s worked in the past, but I’m coming up empty so far.

  6. Went to Baja Fresh a few days ago and again today–closed with small sign on door that states something to the effect “indefinitely closed due to major mechanical malfunction”

Does anyone know anything? Just seems a bit odd. I think they are only about 1 year old. Can’t imagine what is malfunctioning so bad that they’ve been shut down this long….probably not a good sign.

    • Sign still up and they are still closed as of yesterday. It didn’t read the sign to see if it changed, but it was definitely closed, lights off, chairs on the tables.

  7. Went to G Mart today. Jam packed, horrendous traffic. But we loved it! We used to go to the one near Alexandria when we lived down there so we knew what to expect. It’ll calm down and during the week it’ll be much easier to get in and out.

    • Also, you’re not going to get fish any fresher than they have it. We bought 2 small rock fish, had them cleaned and scaled, and I put them in the oven with a little butter, salt and pepper. Spectacularly fresh. Hubby and son have gone out to the Bay and caught them from charter boats and they were no fresher than these were.

      • Just came back from Gmart and I’d have to say that it’s almost as much of a game-changer on the grocery situation in Frederick as Wegman’s was. I will try to do all of our produce shopping here– the produce looked great and the variety was fantastic and the prices so much less than anywhere else on most items. A head of cauliflower that would be $4 at Wegman’s was $1.19 at G Mart. I can imagine it won’t be a fun place to go on weekends, but if you can hit it on a weekday, this is a terrific store.

  9. Does anyone know what’s going on with the road construction on RT. 15 South right off i-70 West? I don’t think they are planning to expand the 2-lane road but was wondering if any one of you know.

    Like

    • I believe they are putting in a new ramp and road that will take you from Rt. 15/340 to Rt. 180, through the new “Jefferson Tech Park” area. I haven’t seen any real plans but I would love to know more details about it.

  10. Just came back from the Great Frederick Fair for the THIRD time since it opened this year, since it is, after all Fair Day. NEVER went before we had kids, but love that the kids get to see how agriculture really works. (And of course, there is the Midway.) Saw a live calf birth when we went on Wednesday (it was a breech, so the vet had to reach into the cow, chain the calf’s legs and haul him out). Just one of the many, many reasons Frederick is a wonderful place to live.

  11. I know recently there was some discussion about bike sharing. Have there been any pushes to create more bike paths? Along 144 between spring ridge and the intersection with quinn orchard rd, there’s a long stretch of pavement separated by a guardrail from 144 that looks like it might have been the old 144 a while ago. So often I’ve thought was a great bike path that would make from easter Frederick Co to downtown Frederick.

      • Do you know what happened to those restaurants? I moved to Frederick and saw them not being open anymore and wondered. Thanks for the reply. 🙂

      • They closed a few years ago. If I recall about Houlihans, they closed the doors one day while people were eating there? I think we had just eaten there a few days before…probably 2-3 years ago? Perkins went along with it. I think they were owned by the same company. There was an article in the news-post. Something about profits.

      • They were open for business one day and then when the employees showed up the next day for work the doors were locked. No warning. The daughter of a friend was a hostess at one of them and had zero warning that her job was gone. Not even an assistant manager knew about it until the doors were locked. Every time we’d eaten in either of them, lunch or dinner, they were busy. But apparently the company that owns them were shutting them down in many cities.

    • Have you tried Colonial Jewelers? Since they have been there for so long, I bet they have a person on staff for that or at least knows who would do it- if they don’t . Good Luck!

    • PJ’s in the FSK Mall repaired one for me several years ago (when they were still just a Kiosk in the mall). They had to send it off to a company in New York, and it took a couple months, but it came back clean and well-repaired.

  14. There is a new sandwich shop open in the shopping center with the Safeway on 7th street next to the CVS, where the old “Frederick Catering Company” used to be. I didn’t eat there and don’t remember the name, but I picked up a carry out menu and it looked like it could be good. Lots of variety. Has anyone tried it?

    Like

    • We’ve ordered carryout from them. It’s called 7th Street Sandwich Shop http://7thstreetsandwich.com/. It’s a little confusing because the sign on the building still just says “carryout,” but that’s the place. We really enjoyed our sandwiches and their fries. Everything tasted extremely fresh and there are a lot of interesting selections on the menu, as far as sandwiches are concerned. The owner was the one making all of the food when we were there and was very friendly.

      • Great selection and prices seem reasonable — Tried the eggplant parm “slider” (small sub, but big enough for a meal) and also the “Hey Dude” (roasted veggie sub). A bite-sized chocolate chip cookie was hidden in the wrapper of one sub, which was a nice surprise. Might want to call ahead if you go for lunch on a work day, because my experience was that service was a little slow.

  17. The old timers probably know this, but it’s a good heads-up for others….friend and I spent the day shopping and eating downtown yesterday. We were both parked in the Church St garage so we went to the machines together to pay for our parking. My friend used the little credit card-only machine. She paid, and in the time it took her to put her credit card away the machine spit out and then took back her ticket. Not more than 10 seconds could have elapsed. She was reaching for it with her other hand as it disappeared back into the machine. We went to the exit and used the “Help” button to call someone. The lady that answered said that it’s “a very fast process, you have to grab that ticket the instant you see it.” She did tell my friend to go get her car and when she was back at the exit to call again for the gate to be raised. WHY would the machine suck that ticket back so fast?? How many other people, especially visitors to town, have probably stood there chatting or putting away their credit card or taking their cash change only to have the ticket disappear. Why have a time limit on it? Doesn’t that just cause a lot of problems with people having to get the City to help them get out rather than solve any problems whatsoever? Also….on “free days” when the entrance makes you take a ticket anyway but not use it to get out….make sure you destroy that ticket asap. I once reached for what I thought was the ticket that I had just paid for, stuck it in the exit machine and it announced that I owed $620! I quickly got it back, backed up the car, got into a space and found the right ticket. I looked at the one I had tried to use and it was from Memorial Day weekend.

    • Speaking of parking garage issues, I was in the garage across from the Courthouse yesterday. I inserted my ticket, and the machine indicated the fee was $3.00. I inserted my credit card, and the machine immediately read there was a ticket jam. I couldn’t get anyone on the emergency button at the machine and had to go to the exit gate to call from there. About 10 minutes later, the parking attendant showed up from one of the other garages and unjammed the ticket and directed me to use the other machine. THIS time, it said I owed $5.00, even though I was still in the $3.00 fee range. The attendant pretty much shrugged and said he couldn’t do anything. I needed to be somewhere, so if I wanted to get out, I basically had to suck it up and pay the money that I didn’t owe. (There was also a lady there who had noticed that she was being charged $11.00 from that machine, when she should have only owed $8.00.)

  18. Saw in the latest “Frederick” magazine that a new restaurant is coming to Westview, The Lodge. They’ll be serving things like duck, wild boar, venison, kangaroo, elk, and bison. YUM! I’ve had all of those meats and they are all delicious! Can’t wait to give the new place a try when they open.
