  1. How about the “Jeffersonian Patriotic Club” on E. 4th St. downtown. Noticed that for the first time recently. Google searches don’t help much.

      • Not 100% about the Jeffersonian Club, I think at one time it was a democratic bar, but again I’m not 100%.

The Redmen club is just another private club like the animal clubs (Elks, Moose, Eagles, Etc…) Th

    • I’ve had a few political discussions with this gentleman and can concur that he’s one of a few people in town who I believe actually have the best interest of the county in heart. I won’t be able to make it but would encourage others interested in local politics to give him a look.

  3. Could I possibly be the only one who is outraged by the one year sentence given to a man who stole $90,000 from the Dept. of Juvenile Services Center?? The paper states that one of the reasons for such a ridiculously light sentence is because he is the sole support of his family. I can only imagine the anger now felt by the families of other thieves who received much harsher sentences for much lesser crimes. I see no justice here.

      • That’s okay because I seldom use the TJMaxx side of the Mt. Airy store. They don’t have anything in my size (Petite) so it’s pointless. But I buy almost all of my kitchen/household items from Homegoods.

      • Can you two fill me in on what’s great about Homegoods? Like the difference between what they offer and Target? Never been to the one in Mt Airy, but I know I want to check out this one.

        Thanks!

      • They offer a lot of pans, cooking supplies, really pretty dishes, sheets, decorations, furnitures and rugs. I believe the quality is far better than Target. I just got a small kitchen aid teapot for $12. On overstock it is $23. It’s name brand off price, not name brand lower quality line

      • Exactly. I went there this morning and love it! It may have even more on the Homegoods side than the Mt. Airy store does. I can buy lovely cookware, pots and pans, utensils, glassware, etc of excellent brand names for far less than Target – and the selection is definitely far better. There are also paintings, wall hangings, lots of kids stuff, linens, carpets, furniture, lamps, and all sorts of decorative items. They even have great food items. I buy my sea salt and very good Madagascar vanilla extract there for a fraction of their prices in other stores. They have oils of all sorts including truffle, avocado, walnut and more, pastas, sauces, jams, teas…….you get the picture.

      • I have never had much luck with the food items, but we bought a beautiful mirror at the Frederick store about a week ago. Too bad it didn’t fit in the space I was planning for it, so it had to go back. On an interesting note, these mirrors were not in the Mt Airy store when I returned it there, so it looks like the store has different items. But they let you return to either store.

      • Yes, you have to go to the individual stores. They each get inventory from other stores that are selling out, over stocked, whatever, and they are ALL different. You are NOT going to go to the website and find things to buy because no two stores have the same inventories. Have you never been to a Ross or a Marshall’s? Same concept. Gees. It’s not that hard to figure out.

      • You really come across holier than thou, you realize that, right?

My only comment was that the website stunk, mainly due to the fact that it is practically not navigable. You click on furniture and all you get is a picture and verbiage about furniture. I did not realize it was an overstock sort of store, but so is Ollie’s and they have fliers and a website.

      • But they do sell the same stuff in all stores, not entirely. TJ max and home goods do have a private label they sell in all stores. I visit the Columbia store often and the Mt Airy one. The Pillows were exactly the same, the pots and pans and the lamps. Also the rugs, and some kitchen supplies. And I have found the same clothes in different TJ Max, so it is the same, because TJ Max actually has it’s own brand name clothing – it is not all overstock. Some of it is, not all.

I have been in the Columbia store and it does carry a lot of the same stuff as Mt Airy store. So yeah some people who have been in the Columbia store and the Mt Airy store and then would assume they all had the same stuff and not make the trip to Frederick, for those that don’t live in Frederick.

Anyway, what is the point of getting slightly rude about it? Some people have never been and don’t know everything. Maybe if we gave everybody the benefit of the doubt once in a while, people might be a little nicer to each other and something good might come out of that. It is just a store and if someone doesn’t know about it, I am going to assume they have other more important things to care about. There are people in this world who have never been to a Ross or Marshalls, like me. So using that as an example means nothing to me. Not everyone has the same experiences in life and have been in the same exact stores as everyone else.

      • And now I just do have to correct you:

They do not sell overstock or imperfect or left over or sell out items from other stores

According to a blogger who went to an event sponsored by them “One of the misconceptions I had about TJ Maxx/Marshalls was that they bought leftovers that other stores didn’t want or couldn’t sell. That’s not true: We were told that they buy directly from 10,000 vendors in 60 countries. ”

which means, they do sell mostly the same stuff in all stores. Occasionally some items are not the same, but for the most part they are all the same because they use the same vendors directly

  4. Attention concerned parents, grandparents and/or anyone concerned about public education:

A Common Core Townhall Meeting will be held Tuesday, September 10th at the American Legion Hall on Taney Avenue. 6:30pm-9:30pm.

The new common core standards were adopted by most but not all states in the USA when the federal government dangled money in front of them if they “voluntarily” signed on. No money for states that did not voluntarily sign on. Hmmm.

Come hear from nationally recognized experts who have testified in front of Congress, the Frederick County Teachers Association and from Frederick County Public Schools.

    The facebook page is: http://www.facebook.com/CommonCoreTownHall

Seating is limited. Register for a free ticket at: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/7172393823

  6. Does anyone know of good night photography spots in Frederick? Somewhere open and accessible for capturing the sky, but without light pollution?

    Thanks!

    • I would say try high point past Sabillasville. It’s not Frederick County, but is very close. You could also look into Washington Monument on South Mountain. Again, not technically in the county, but very close. Both have similar views.

  7. FIOS Update: I just called Verizon. According to a CS rep, there are “no immediate plans” to install FIOS (fiberoptic service) in Frederick County–or, more accurately, to install FIOS in the 99% of Frederick County that currently does not receive FIOS. In fact, Verizon won’t even speculate on when FIOS might arrive here, if it ever does. My requests for a guesstimate, and then my request to talk to a FIOS expert, was met with a “don’t call us, we’ll call you when it arrives” response. In short, there’s been little if any progress to bring FIOS to Frederick County in the last 10 years–and it’s not apt to arrive in the next several years.

  8. I have friends looking for a good furniture upholstery shop in Frederick County. Shop has to be able to pick up a large sofa, reupholster it, and deliver it back to their home. They are willing to choose and purchase the fabric ahead of time themselves if that would hold down the price.

  9. I’m looking for a place to get an inexpensive rug remnant. I’m not super picky on dimensions (other than it be larger than 5 x 7), but it needs to have finished edges (as it will be an area rug in the basement). As our residency in Frederick is relatively new, I’m not even sure where to start looking 🙂

  10. Has anyone else been to the new Manna Bakery on 40 in the shopping center with the vacant Record and Tape Traders? I went in on a whim a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised the space and selection and have been back a few times to pick up various pastries. I haven’t tried the sandwich/coffee counter.

      Hi Penny,

Thank you for contacting Baja Fresh. Our Frederick location should reopen soon. Unfortunately, we do not have the exact dates. Thanks for being a loyal customer and see you soon.

    • It did seem to underperform a little, although I’ve never noticed it empty. Chipotle does a huge business and it seems like Café Rio (which I didn’t care for) does fine, so I’m surprised Baja Fresh didn’t do better. I have noticed it’s sometimes been hot in there from the day it opened, so I don’t doubt that there are a/c issues that need addressing. I hope they get it together and reopen, so it will be around every few months when I get a taste for it..

      • We ate at Cafe Bueno tonight and had the tortas- it was amazing! When we pulled up we didn’t know what to think because it is sandwiched between a 7-11 and a liquor store, but the inside is beautiful and clean. Thanks for the recommendation!

  13. Café Bueno is awesome! The tortas are especially good. My only complaint is that they close at 7:00 p.m., even on Fridays and Saturdays. They said they would consider staying open a bit later if there is a demand. (Hint Hint).

  14. Anyone know of any plans for the former Pier One on route 40? I would personally love to see an independent coffee shop(like the one downtown) in that space.
