Open Thread July 2013 Edition

These open threads provide a chance for us to chat with our neighbors. Ask questions, share news, or whatever you want. As long as it’s central to Frederick County and civil, anything goes.

Have at it in the comments!

  1. I love my downtown neighborhood but am concerned at the amount of trash placed in Gaither’s Alley. I would love to also have our neighbors set some form of a committee to handle our block issues (the neighbors that share Gaither’s alley) whether it is trash, questionable individuals, and so forth.

    • I don’t think they’re making any progress. Not only has SuperFresh been empty for probably 2-3 years, but Blockbuster and CVS next to it have been empty for many, many years. Fresh Greens markets took the SuperFresh locations in Brunswick and Mt Airy, but weren’t interested in the Ballenger Creek location. I think we’ll be lucky to see something in there within 5 years.

  2. Any updates on G-Mart? I see the sign is up. Also, how about rumors for the Greene Turtle location? That’s a prime location, thinking it will go fast.

    • Re: G Mart, I have been wondering what’s been going on too. I saw some cars parked in the lot today but it still looks like the windows are covered. I had heard they were opening end of June. Hopefully they will put a “now open” sign up when they finally do open.

    • They have a sign up that they are now hiring and there is Nothing in the store yet, if you drive up and look in. So I would say give it at least another month. I worked at and opened the Marshall’s over in Clemson Corner and it took us at least a month to get everything off the trucks, tagged and set up for us to open.

  3. Does anyone know a reliable computer hardware repair company in the frederick area? Specifically, one that can solder/replace chips.

      • I got a mailing b/c I have a TJ Maxx credit card (which I never use) that invited me to a preview on Aug 2nd 7-9pm. Because they didn’t say “bring this mailing with you”, I assume that this is a “soft opening” and anyone who happens by can go in.

  5. I’m on the executive committee of a local professional association, and we’re looking for a new place to hold our monthly meetings. We meet at 5:30 one Monday each month, and there are generally around 8 of us. Looking for a restaurant with a low-key private room or one that’s quiet enough around that time for us to have discussions. Any ideas?

    • It’s not in Frederick proper, but Braddock Inn has a side room that is frequently used for group meetings of various sizes. They are open on Mondays (always a consideration with restaurants). The room is very low key, and I’m guessing it’s quiet inside because I rarely hear much sound coming from the room when I’ve been outside it during a meeting. Additional attractions are that parking is free and abundent, and it’s easy to access I-70 when the meeting ends and everyone is in a hurry to get home.

    • You might want to try the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, across from the Post Office on Patrick/Chapel Alley. They have plenty of space and nothing going on Monday evenings that I know of.

  6. Does anyone know if there is any plans to put a restaurant at 46 South Market Street? That is a very large space on the corner of Carroll Creek. There was talk about 3 years ago of Micallies going into this space. But the owners backed out.
