According to the Frederick News-Post the city planning commission approved a small rye whiskey distillery for Frederick:
The commission unanimously approved sending a positive recommendation to the mayor and aldermen for the city to change the law to allow such an operation.
The decision paves the way for a distillery of 10,000 square feet or less.
It would also apply to smaller wineries or breweries.
Swordfish LLC, which owns Family Meal on East Street, plans to rent space on that property to a distiller, according to Jonathan Staples, a partner with the company.
Staples did not identify the possible tenant Monday night, but said the hope is to begin construction of the distillery later this year. The first batch would not be ready until 2016 or 2017, he said.
