      • Darren,

I am sure B. can give you more details but the group is People building Frederick’s Future
founded by Ed Hinde and made up of a wide variety of interested & concerned citizens
Urban planners, NAC members, business people. etc. It is in the early stages (less than a year)
but they have already caught the attention of city govt.

      • Hi,

We are a group of concerned citizens newly formed to work with citizens, businesses, city government officials, etc. for the betterment of our City and it’s future.

You can contact us through our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/FredericksFuture?fref=ts

At this time, we are working on our webpage which I will announce once it is up and running.

        Thank you for your interest.

      • Going on a pub crawl does not equate to “falling down drunk.” We’ve done pub crawls and no one was falling down drunk. We had a fabulous evening, didn’t have a drink in every single pub, enjoyed the company of everyone else, the history of the pubs, etc. My parents had the very narrow minded assumption that if there was a bottle of wine in the fridge, you had a “drinking problem.” Nonsense. A pub crawl is a social evening out, nothing more.

  2. I have a question about creating web sites. Hope I am putting it in the right place. I need someone who can work on a web site I have started in WordPress. I am having a hard time putting it all together and would love to find a person who knows the WordPress program (free service) and is familiar with it but won’t charge an arm and a leg to help me out. Who wants an arm and a leg anyway?
    Thanks, Jill

  3. I see that that big corner store front at Westview (in the plaza behind the theater area) is going to be yet another Five Guys. 😦 So many other restaurants that could come to Frederick and we get another Five Guys.

    • I have to agree with you there!!! We could use a Chili’s or any other number of restaurants. It must be like the mall…..the owner implied…. that we, Fredericktonians, only shop ‘blue light’ specials of Walmart. Maybe the restaurant industry just doesn’t have a clue.

      • Good Food…also enjoy Fuddruckers. Too bad we can’t bring back the ole’ days Peter Pan and Dandy.

Also, need a Chick Fil-A other than the one to the south of the City.

      • We don’t need the north to mirror the south end. We don’t need more chains. I’ll admit, I like having the new centers at this end, because I work here, but I’m not a fan of everything being duplicated.

      • I agree with you on not needing a mirror image of north and south…totally. I suppose I just like Chick Fil-A if I am forced to eat fast food; therefore, I would like one that isn’t so far away, LOL. Regardless, you are so right though, let’s not try to copy one end of the City to the other. We need new business that we don’t have in Frederick to move here. Speaking on that issue, the last thing we need is yet another Walmart on the Golden Mile!

      • I live off the golden mile and wish it would start growing again. I have hope…except for yesterday when someone went driving down 40 firing off gunshots…bleh.

      • BK, this is a crime that unfortunately as we all know too well can happen anywhere. A teen with access to a firearm shot another teen, nothing to do with the GM. Horrific crime has happened all thru the city, county, state, US. I remain positive about the direction the city and community groups are moving in regarding bringing business to the GM and supporting those who are here. Iencourage you to attend your local NAC meeting and or a Golden Mile Alliance meeting, information about either group can be found on the city website. Make your issues known and find out first hand what is going on and how you can be part of it.

      • I wonder how many of the same people who say “we don’t need a mirror of the south side on the north side” also want people to stop driving so far to shop, want people to save gas. I live on the north side. If we had a Target on this side I could almost (not quite, because the one side will never duplicate the other side) stop driving so far to the south to do the shopping that I could get done on the north side. I don’t shop at Wal-Mart. Ever. There could be 5 of them over here and I still would not shop there. I’ll drive to Target in my 15 mpg vehicle, a vehicle we have no intention of replacing til it rots into the ground..and then we’ll look for another big 4 WD vehicle that can tow a travel trailer and haul at least 7 passengers. We’re not going to move to the shopping. The shopping is going to have to come to us. That’s the hard cold reality.

  4. I agree with Gypsy about not needing another Walmart. I live on the north side of town and despise the idea that Walmart may put in a Super Walmart on the corner of Rt 26 and Monocacy blvd. From what I understand, they will continue to own the building they are currently in and keep any potential competitor from moving in. (possibly leaving it empty) I do not like Walmart – I don’t like the merchandise, the way the store is kept, the lack of help from managers, when you ask and most importantly, the way the corporate company treats their employees. I too, will drive across town to shop at Target. I wish there was something the residents of this area could do the block it from happening. Besides, with Giant and Wegmans, do we need another grocery store?

    • I had heard that there would be a Sam’s Club moving into the “old” Wal-Mart building. Doesn’t matter to me because we use Costco, not Sam’s Club, and we won’t be going to a new Sam’s Club no matter how close it is. Wal-Mart should have been told from the get-go to either build the original store so that it could be expanded or forget it. That store building is not even 10 years old and I find it impossible to believe that the company wasn’t looking that far ahead at the time it was being built. For any planning commission to have allowed any company to take up all of that land for a parking lot and store without making absolutely sure about any long range plans on the part of that company (i.e. wanting to expand to a “super” Wal-Mart) was gross negligence. If Wal-Mart believes for a second that they’ll somehow take away Wegmans shoppers then they are extremely delusional. Apples and oranges.

      • I totally agree that this news about Walmart is very disturbing. In order for all of this to happen, there had to be information shared with you NAC and planning meetings with the public to voice concerns. It is important that we attend these meetings as residents to have a voice in the growth and vision of our City. There is a new group in town, People Building Frederick’s Future, can be found on Facebook, that is attempting to help encourage good communication between all factors of the City, residents, NAC’s, City Officials, business owners, etc. This group, PBFF, is working hard to help with an appropriate vision of our City for the future with smart planning that the ‘City controls rather than the developer’. I encourage you and all residents of our City to become involved.

  5. Along with your statements concerning Walmart, our great City does not need a third Walmart being built on the Golden Mile. Join our facebook page of the City of Frederick, NAC5 for dates of upcoming NAC and Board meetings for the public to voice opinions on this suggestion of allowing the developer to change the zoning from Mixed Use to General Commercial so that he can build this Walmart. https://www.facebook.com/pages/City-of-Frederick-NAC-5/179087392127949?fref=ts

    • Oh, the lights are just so lovely…..some of my favorites…Carroll Parkway just east of West College Terrace, you can’t miss it.Also a couple of homes just off Yellow Springs Road, make a left on Mountain View Drive and you will see the homes just to your left…I believe it is Hawthorne Drive. Auscherman’s home is lovely off Christopher’s Crossing as well. Enjoy….

    • We used to live over in Spring Ridge and there were always many lovely displays there. It’s on the east side of Frederick off of East Patrick just before East Patrick goes up onto I-70. We still drive over there to look at the lights. Not much more than the usual decorations here in Whittier with the exception of a very few homes. Haven’t driven thru Clover Hill so maybe this year we’ll go over there.

  6. I’m so excited I found this blog. We are about to move from Germany to the Fredrick area in January. We still don’t know where we want to live or where is even best to look so I’m trying to get a feel for the area. This looks like the perfect place to do just that.

    • Welcome! My husband and I have lived in 10 states and 2 countries (including Germany – we were in Berlin when it was still West Berlin, and in Augsburg), traveled thru 47 states, and after all of that we chose Maryland, and Frederick, as our permanent home. If you’re into outdoors adventures I lead a group of 300 women “Mid-Atlantic Women Outdoors” and we’d love to have you join up! You can find us on Meetup.com.

Hope you have a safe trip over, easy move, and grand adventures ahead of you!

      • My further research found that Hard Times on 40 is doing something, and Brewer’s Alley is doing a 3-course meal (but didn’t say anything about an actual “party”, champagne toast, etc.)

Still on the lookout – will share what I find. Thanks for sharing Cafe NOLA. I’m not sure I trust going downtown, though. Just because we will be responsible and get a cab does not mean others will, unfortunately.
