  1. How did everyone fare last night? All of Whittier was out of power all night but restored around 6:10 am this morning. We saw some spectacular flashes of light south of town during the night and east of town this morning around 4:30 am. Definitely not lightning – probably power lines or transformers blowing out. We sit up on the hillside in Whittier and the winds up here were very scary and roared all night. Fortunately we have no north facing windows. We’d heard that they would take the worst of the wind and possibly blow out unless they were taped or covered. We have natural gas so, until the power was restored, we were able to use a camp percolator on the gas range to make coffee, had plenty of hot water, used an LED camp lantern for light, and would have manually lit the gas fireplace for at least some heat. Our only concern was the 2 fridge/freezers and all of their contents but now all is well.

  2. Downtown only had a one-second power outage yesterday afternoon. I heard a transform blow somewhere. Last night, though, that was a windy one! Around 12:30 a.m. there were some incredible gusts that buffeted the house. As I lay in bed I could feel the whole room shake. I was waiting to hear some crashing sounds, but, thank goodness, there were none.

  3. Can anyone recommend a good tree removal service? I’ve got a large branch leaning on the front of my house, blocking the front door. No major damage, luckily, but it just feels wrong “leaving by the back door” of my own house…

  4. Don’t have plans this Saturday? Bring the family out to the Urbana vs. Linganore football game to support a great cause

Military Appreciation at UHS Football Game

A Military Appreciation event will be held on Nov. 3, at the Urbana High School (UHS) vs. Linganore High School football game at 2 p.m. The event includes a large flag display, military color guards, the Maryland National Guard on site with equipment there and more. Put on by friends of Urbana’s Capt. John Ryan Dennison with support from UHS. Dennison, a UHS graduate, died while serving our country in Iraq in 2006.
