  1. Exactly four years ago, we all asked: When will FIOS (Verizon fiber optic service) finally arrive in Frederick County?

It’s hard to believe there’s been zero progress locally in the last four years. Has anyone heard anything credible? (Yes, I’m aware that a thin sliver of Frederick County, along the Montgomery County line, is wired for FIOS but that was true some 4-6 years ago.)

    • Apparently (according to someone in Billing and Installation and/or the Sales Center at Verizon), FIOS is coming soon to Frederick. Earlier this week I received an email from Verizon stating:

“At Verizon, we are committed to bring you the best suite of products and the most current capabilities, while providing the value and quality of service that you expect. From time to time, we must make changes to our product offering to meet these goals. Beginning May 6, 2012, we will no longer offer High Speed Internet without local voice service on the same account.

What does this mean for you?
If you currently have High Speed Internet without local voice service on the same account, there is no action required on your part to continue enjoying your internet service.
You will not experience any disruption of service.
Prior to May 6, 2012, you can still make speed upgrades or downgrades to your existing service.
Prior to May 6, 2012, you can receive bundle discounts by adding DIRECTV service or Verizon Wireless service to your current internet service.
What this means if you change or disconnect your High Speed Internet Service as of May 6, 2012, or after:
You can make changes to and retain your Verizon High Speed Internet Service on or after the above date, by adding Verizon’s local voice service to the same account.
If you are moving your service from one location to another on or after the above date, you may subscribe to internet service at your new location if you also subscribe to Verizon’s local voice service on the same account.
If you choose to subscribe to additional Verizon services you could be eligible for a bundled discount when you also subscribe to Verizon’s local voice service on the same account.”

I called Verizon on Monday or Tuesday to find out more and no one had heard about this change. After being passed around, I finally found someone who (after asking a supervisor) told me that 1) This would now mean that I have to pay for a land line even though I don’t want or use one, (but that they could try to find me a credit or discount after I make the change in my plan to add a land line) and 2) This change is in preparation for establishing FIOS in Frederick. However, no one could tell me when the FIOS installation would be completed.

Needless to say, I am not happy. I already have high speed internet through the phone line. And, I did not receive a good explanation about why this line cannot be used. I haven’t made a decision yet about what I’m going to do. In fact, I’d like to know if anyone else is experiencing something similar. And, if so, what he/she has decided to do.

  2. Hello! I’m planning a party for a Saturday in May, and am trying to identify a good place to have a dinner before the group goes out line dancing (yee-ha!). Are there any places between the west end of Frederick and east end of Hagerstown that don’t resent large groups and might be willing to split the bill for each person in a group of around 20? I usually avoid chains, and it would be ideal to have people spending less than $20 a plate. I was thinking The Main Cup in Middletown, but any other suggestions? Thanks for any input =)
