    • Here is a new CSA in the Urbana area that needs support. If you are on Facebook, look up Fruitcake Farms. Otherwise, here is a bit of info for you. They have a limited amount of shares but last I heard, some were available.

    • The Frederick Urban Grower’s is a Historic District located CSA . MEMBERSHIP is a fraction of the cost of normal CSA’s. We are not a plot based garden. We plant together, and harvest together. Weekly shares as yield provides.

Currently, we are a small group of growers working together to create a sustainable environment, plant and harvest healthy food and a cooperative community in an urban environment. (Last year we were interviewed for the London Financial Times and also had a write up in the Frederick News Post. Getting the word out is a part time job.)

We GROW OUR OWN. 1500 square feet of raised beds, 1000 Gallons of fresh rainwater harvesting off the roof of my house and garage, organic composting on site…

We are not a for profit or a not for profit. I am presently operating this at a loss after paying for all the infrastructure personally, and recouping 30 percent of it from last year’s memberships. This year should help.

Alot of community gardens operate on private property. This one just happens to be at my residence. I wanted to share the land with the community to educate and promote self reliance and the possibilities that growing one’s own food can bring to a family, or a block of families.

We are looking for 5 to 7 new members.

Last year we had too much food! The entire fall crop was donated to the Soup Kitchen in November!

I have not had time or energy to pursue the Non profit status- and we don’t have a lawyer on the membership-yet!

The Plant Nation is located at 256 South Carroll Street beside MSD. February 25th is our next NEW MEMBERS meeting and 1st review of the 2012 garden layout.

Please call me if you are interested in joining. All Details are on the website and that is the official place where you join. Dues are paid by check, not on the site. 301-332-5585

      • Thanks for the info Laurie! My husband and I have already purchased our CSA share for this year but an urban gardening project sounds like something we’d love to be involved in next year.

  1. That Cuban Place just posted on Facebook that they are reopening in March five minutes from downtown. They didn’t say specifically where, but this is GREAT news!

    • We live in Whittier and noticed that the windows are covered over from the inside and there’s a permit posted. No idea. I wish we could get something to fill the space that was a market and then a sports pub. And there’s that huge empty commercial building behind the shopping center. What a perfect place for a fitness center.

    • I noticed today that the Miller Beer truck was there off-loading cases of all kinds of beers. Hopeful signs of a new cafe? Pub? Market? I’m pretty sure I saw a row of deep fryers on the back of a truck there several days ago.

      • It’s a liquor store. They have the name up over the doors now. “Whittier Liquors”

If they are cheaper than Old Farm, they’ll do well. If they are over-priced like the “market” was, they won’t.

      • Thanks. I agree, they’ll have to beat Old Farm – by a lot. Convenience and/or “shop local” are never enough reasons for me to shop anywhere. Price and selection are.

  3. Went to Meadows last night and walked over, the liquor store apparently opened on Leap Day. Didn’t go in, because I needed to get the custard home, but I’ll check ’em out today.

    • The RE-Flea was a RE-al success. Hope you all had a chance to come by. Next one is April 7th.…And ….Summer will have 150 plus outdoor parking lot vending spaces for pre reg and drive in vendors…AND food vendors and music, too. Looking for quality ethnic food, served outdoors, under a tent. Know any vendors? Local musicians wanted, who will play for the crowd, FOR THE P.R Young bands, good will effort. Let me know. Thanks.
