  1. How crazy has it been at Wegman’s so far? I’d love to pop in and use some of the coupons I’ve gotten…but not sure it’s worth the insanity for a free loaf of bread 🙂 I’m thrilled about Wegman’s…just wondering how long I should wait for the mobs to thin out a bit?

    • I went during the early lunch rush around 11:15 today and it wasn’t that bad. I found a parking spot right away and I didn’t have to wait in line to check out. There were plenty of people shopping and picking up lunch items, but I didn’t have to throw any elbows! 😉

    • Yesterday was a madhouse. We got in at 11:15, had lunch, and shopped the store for our weekly shopping trip (for 2 adults). Did not make it out until 2:30. It was exhausting.

Will probably skip it next weekend (or go way off-peak… they’re open until midnight), but after that it’s probably safe.

Prices were not incredibly greater than average, variety was good, and I really agree with their individually vac-packed meats. As two adults who shop “on-sale”, we bulk-buy, vac-pack, and freeze it when we get home anyway.

The produce looked amazing and still seems fresh in the fridge.

We both got a lot of tiny, mysterious splinters in the produce area…

    • Wegman’s is great, albeit crazy for right now. I expect weekends will stay super busy for quite some time. Most of their prices are really competitive, and I know from experience that their store brand products are exceptional. The customer service is absolutely exceptional. The $6 meals are a bargain, for sure- enough food for a very hungry person or two light meals and super tasty. They’ll be a lifesaver.

    • I went to Wegman’s yeterday at lunchtime. No problem getting a parking space. Crowded, but I was able to move around easily. Didn’t buy anything, as I just wanted to check it out. I don’t think I’ll go ther on any weekend day anytime soon. Happy Wegman’s is here!!!!!

  2. I keep hearing a rumor about a Noodles & Company opening up here in Frederick. Nothing on their site, but there are constant posts on Washington Jobs hiring for general staff. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Noodles & Company is looking for genuine, nice people who value serving others and thrive in an upbeat and fast-paced (but not fast food) environment. We can offer you a fun place to work, great hours and lots of room to grow. But fear not–while we do want to be a part of your life, we don’t want to consume it. In fact, balance is part of our company values and hey, we have lives too!…

  3. My son and I went to Red Robin last night – excellent! We got there at 5:15 pm and it was already packed. We only waited a few minutes for a table. When we left at 6:15 pm there was at least a dozen people waiting outside because the inside waiting area was full. I had the southwestern grilled chicken salad. It was enormous (brought 1/2 home) and very good. Son had a bacon cheeseburger and said it was excellent. Happy Hour is 3 pm – 6 pm so I got a 16 oz draft Yuengling for $2.50. One suggestion I have for them: PLEASE get pagers for the people that are waiting and STOP the way-too-loud strident ear splitting announcements when tables are ready for guests!! The noise level in there is already very high without that and it constantly interrupts conversation because it is impossible to hear or talk over that.

  4. Went to Wegmans last night for the first time. It’s an amazing store. Super busy, but we did pick up some things that we needed and hit the cafe area for dinner. I can’t wait until the crowd dies down a little bit and we can really look around. My first impression is that it’s awesome and I’ll be back soon.

  6. Finally stopped at the little gelato shop on Market Street. I’ve just returned from 2 weeks in Italy so I was really looking forward to a chocolate gelato as a nice bit of memory of the trip. I walked one block with it and tossed it in the first trash can I saw. It didn’t taste as much like chocolate as it tasted like cigarette smoke. Blech. I tried half a dozen spoonfuls of it and just could not eat it. I’ll stick to the gelato sold in the grocery stores for now. 😦

    • It’s not gelato, but Zoe’s has an amazing chocolate ice-cream-like dessert called FroZoe. Also, Juliet’s Market has gelato, as does Baltimore Coffee Company, but I don’t know how good it is.

  7. I tried to go to the Book Nook Cafe today and it was closed! I had no idea this was happening. Went there a lot for lunch and it always seemed to have a good crowd. Anyone know any details about this?

    • From what I’ve read on-line, Hallmark is privately held and does not have to disclose anything about store closings. Was the retail side of the store closed as well or just the cafe side? Apparently they’ve been closing down stores all over the US without any prior warnings.

    • I heard they had to close because the people they rented the space from raised the rent too high, also, I heard that they are putting a little caesars where the cafe used to be. Pizza Pizza

  8. Went to Wegmans yesterday, around 9 am. It was no more crowded than any other grocery store in the area at the same time of day. I spent 2 full hours cruising the lanes with my cart and filling it up. Grocery heaven. I even found the green olives that we had had in Italy and hadn’t seen anywhere else. They have them on their Mediterranean Food Bar. My only wish is that they’d carry Perdue Oven Stuffer chickens. They’re the only ones I ever buy. I did get a Wegmans brand “roasting” chicken – we’ll see how it is. Stopped buying any other brands years ago after having to pluck pin feathers out of them (ewwww) or finding that they just weren’t as juicy and flavorful as Perdue’s. They did have the Perdue game hens so I also got some of those. On the way home, coming south on Hwy 15, I did glance over at the Giant Eagle parking lot (7th street) and it was as full as it normally would be. So apparently they aren’t being harmed by Wegmans.

    • That part of Frederick is normally out of the way for me, but I swung by Wegman’s noonish yesterday just to scope it out, following a dr’s appt. nearby. The traffic into/exiting the shopping center seemed awfully heavy to me, with a cop directing at the entrance, and a security guard standing watch, monitoring the hubbub. Maybe the lesson is, think twice about visiting Wegmans around lunch hour, at least for the time being. (Grocery shopping at that hour of the day is not something I do anyway.)

    • Gotta hand it to Wegmans, I’ve never seen such buzz over a grocery store before- or crowds for that matter. I went there the other night and the crowds at the market cafe were insane, making for a difficult experience. Where did these people all come from? I sense some of them made the trek from Montgomery County to check it out. I must admit, while not cheap, it was the best grocery store-variety sushi I’ve had and maybe the best sushi in all of Frederick, while that’s not saying much. I then went out into the grocery store and it was huge and beautiful. Despite the crowds in the store, there was no wait whatsoever for the checkout line. It really is a fantastic store and that section of town is really out of my way, but I will be going off-hours when I return. We still badly need a Trader Joe’s here!

      • I agree that people are probably coming up from MoCo. I know the Wegman’s mass-marketing campaign extended at least into Northern Montgomery County – we have family in Clarksburg who gave us their coupon book.

As for “off-hours”, I would not expect 8:30-9:30pm on Saturday night to be “peak hours”, but they still had all their hot food going, were still restocking, and there were TONS of people. Unlike last weekend, the traffic jams were mostly limited to the packaged meat, produce, and Market Cafe areas. Once we got into standard grocery, it wasn’t terrible. Checking out at 9:30pm had a significant wait.

I know this will come with time, but the bagging and general inexperience of some of the cashiers shows. Our cashier was pleasant, but not speedy and not exactly logical with bagging. Produce in the same reusable bag as stacks of cans, when there are several bags free? We rebagged when we got to the car to avoid damaged goods, because it would be inappropriate to hold the line up telling her how to do her job. I’m sure it will improve with time, but for now, it’s obvious that we are not dealing with veteran cashiers.

      • Gee, let’s see, even 9:30 p.m. on a Sat. nite had tons of people and a significant wait to check out. Is there any such thing as “off hours” at this Wegman’s? Or is it pointless to even ask the question for about 6 months or so?

  9. On Urbana Pike, across from Panera Bread there is a “public notice” sign. Kinda hard to read it from the road without a full stop….which would probably be fatal. Any idea what’s going in there?

    • Gypsy, it was supposed to be another shopping center, but that must have fell through. Now it is going to be a Carmax, it was just approved by the county planning commission.

      • Further north on Urbana Pike there is still the sign about a shopping center “coming soon.” That sign has been there for years.

  10. Don’t know if anyone is interested in the Rebel Race in Frederick on June 18/19, but the Living Social Deal for DC today is a half price registration ($42 instead of $85).

Hope it won’t be 100+ degrees that weekend, because running 15k through mud and climbing ropes and stuff would not be fun…

  11. Been meaning to ask – is there a good fitness center in Frederick, south of the City? Sport & Health (formerly Gold’s) is probably most conveniently located to me, but I have no idea how it is. Not looking to go as far north as 40 and certainly not up to the YMCA or the fitness center in the FISC. I come home via 70W to 355 and head past the Harry Grove stadium on New Design. Something that can be construed to be “on the way home” will probably elicit the greatest level of compliance.

What I want in a gym: Cleanliness, safety, ample equipment for visitors, Cable machines, Smith machines, and a wide variety of dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells. Staff to instruct first-time users in safe use of equipment without pressuring them to sign up for a personal trainer.

What I have little-to-no interest in: Daycare, Classes, Cardio machines, and isolation machines.

Anyone willing to talk about their gym?

    • I like your preferences in a gym, sadly those type of places are few and far between, especially frederick.

I use Fitness First off of the golden mile, it is loaded w/ cardio equipment but their free weight assortment is top notch and it doesn’t seem to be overcrowded on off-peak hours.

South of the city you may be SOL.

      • Thanks for the suggestion. I have heard Fitness First mentioned on a number of occasions. You mentioned they’re not bad at off-peak… Does that imply that peak hours are crowded, or that you don’t go at those times and don’t know? I would probably go between 5pm-7pm on weeknights, right on my way home from work so I don’t have any excuses.

      • They’re the one in the office park off of Crestwood Blvd? Apart from the location, I have heard nothing good about them. Do you have personal experience that differs?

    • I’ve gone to Golds, now Sport & Health, for over 6 years and can vouch for it. Crowds are low in the early morning weekdays when I go, but it can get overly crowded lunchtimes, evenings, and weekends. Fitness classes are on display for anyone on cardio, and the room is often elbow room only, so that could be a deterrent too. Good gym overall though and the price is good.

      • Can anyone comment on the Sport and Health membership prices? I joined the Golds about a year and a half ago for $20 a month, now that they painted the inside and changed the name I’m sure the price has gone up. Tried to ask about new prices and the salesman wouldn’t comment today. I think the place is nice, can be crowded and personal training is expensive but they seem knowledgable. Ken

  12. I belong to Frederick Athletic Club. They are always so nice to me, helped me with new machines and new routines. It’s always clean, they have day care and a ton of classes. Crowded as any gym would be between 5-7 but I’m happy with it.

  13. Stinkbugs??? Not that I miss them mind you! But I haven’t seen one, not one, since the weather warmed up. I saw more of them in the winter, especially in my house. Last year they were all over our deck, in the planters, on the walls…..everywhere. Now, nothing. We do have far more wasps and hornets than I’ve seen in the past…..connection?

    Like

    • For where I live in Damascus, stinkbugs are a year-round pest now. I never go more than a day or two without noticing at least a couple in the house. But you’re right, Gypsy, there seems to have been a distinct drop-off during the recent hot spell…don’t recall seeing any least night, either. But a few weeks ago they were driving me crazy–I’d suck up 25-30 a night in a little hand-vac I keep for that purpose. They’re the worst at night–we try to get by with as few lights turned on as possible, since light attracts them.

Haven’t seen an upswing of wasps and hornets, though.

  14. I have officialy reached my breaking point with Routzhans. I live around the corner from the property and cant stand their marketing approach. The schtick has gone far enough, its like a used car lot out there. Not to mention the people they pay to hold signs all over frederick, its ridiculas. When will it end?

    • Agreed! It’s hideously tacky. Get on with regular business or shut down. No one falls for all of the “inventory reduction” stuff anymore. It is sleazy and slimy.
