Hello Monday.

Hello Frederick.

Did you enjoy the weekend weather? The family and I did.

What else is on your minds?

  1. This one’s always baffled me. A lot of comments on this blog are dedicated to lamenting what we don’t have in Frederick and yet the FSK mall has 2 Hallmark stores. Can anyone explain this?

    • Why two Hallmarks? Probably because they pay their rent and were there first. Not sure the mall management really cares *who* pays, just that they do. I do agree though, it’s odd.

  2. Why is there an HHGregg next to Best Buy? Why where there 2 furniture stores next door to each other in that same mall? Why can we have multiples of so many restaurants and fast food places but not more new ones like Chili’s? Two Wal-Marts but one Target? Tw0 Lowes and two Home Depots. Two “organic” style food stores (Common Market and MOM’s) on the same side of town. Second largest city in Maryland but Rockville, Silver Springs, Columbia, and Timonium get the REI stores. (I don’t shop the Trail House for many reasons – I’ll just keep driving to REI regardless of the price of gas). And I also never understood why there are TWO Hallmark stores in a mall that small. And no actual food court.

      • Here’s the jist from the above link:

“Update on this issue folks. Not one full day after sending this email to the CEO of Brinker, the President of Chili’s, Todd Diener, called me. We spoke for roughly 15 minutes about this issue, and he offered an interesting insight as to why Frederick lacks a Chili’s. It seems that the rights to our particular region in the state are owned by a Franchiser by the name of “The Chesapeake Group.” He went on to explain that Maryland has particularly stringent liquor licensing laws that really make things difficult for a restaurant to build here.

Its worth mentioning that Mr. Diener was extremely pleasant, friendly, and happy to offer their explanation.”

      • I find that pretty hard to believe. Red Robin serves liquor and
and they’re building here. Mimi’s Cafe serves alcohol – they opened.
I could go on. What makes Chili’s liquor service any different
from anyone else? Nothing as far as I’ve experienced at any Chili’s
anywhere. There’s some other story behind that.

    • Wow, Gypsy, you took the words right out of my mouth–bad enough that there are TWO of the same kind of store in one shopping center, but both also SIDE BY SIDE?? Sheesh.

Somehow there are forces at work that tend to keep us more than well-covered in a number of areas and niches while discouraging variety. I’ve noticed the same phenomenon in upper Mont. County. (Will we EVER see a Wegman’s open, as the aging sign in Germantown promises? Enough Giants and Safeways already!) I’ve been in other places that don’t seem as beset by this “sameness.”

    • Having two or more similar businesses located near each other (e.g. Best Buy and hhgregg) is actually increasingly common – witness the growth of “restaurant parks” in many suburbs where several full-service restaurants sit side-by-side. There is even an economics term for it – “Economies of Agglomeration.”

Having said that, two Hallmark stores in little FSK Mall is still pretty weird.

  3. Frederick will soon have two Chipotles too. There is one going in at the new shopping center Clemson Corner off of 26. Not sure when it’s opening but I saw a banner that said “Imminent” Chipotle.

  4. Don’t know if this is old news or not, but…Music and Arts will be opening at Clemson Corner in April. They will also be opening a new location at Westview and closing the Route 40 store. I think he said the Westview location will open in June, not sure on that though.

  5. I too am going to comment on what is lacking…..how about a nice restaurant on East Street, a bistro of sorts that offers outdoor seating. That would be nice….

  6. The standard knee-jerk reply to wanting more stores is “Frederick isn’t big enough.” But we’re not talking about just Frederick. North side stores would pull in shoppers from as far north as Gettysburg. South side stores pull from as far south as Montgomery County. Both sides bring in shoppers from Washington County, and probably beyond. Those who live east of the city have to choose between driving into Frederick or down into Columbia – I believe they’d choose Frederick if the choices were here. We’ve already heard from residents of Montgomery County on this forum that say they prefer to shop up here.

    • I agree. I live in southern PA but work on the south side of Frederick. I do most of my shopping her during the work week. I’m happy to see Clemson Corner opening as it will be very convenient for me. I also know plenty of people near me who come to Frederick to shop even though Hagerstown/Chambersburg/Gettysburg may be much closer.

  7. FIOS…. this used to be “the thing”, but I hear complaints from people who have had it for years, so even if/when we eventually get it in Frederick, my expectations aren’t very high.

      • Other than spending an hour with them yesterday just to get HBO, Starz, and an appointment to have a tech come out to activate a cable outlet…….I haven’t had any problems whatsoever with them or their service. When we had a box fail they were out the next day with a new one. We don’t ever lose service (TV and Internet). I would be hard pressed to switch and I don’t like the look of “mushrooms” sprouting off of houses (the dish).

      • I’m glad you aren’t having problems. I feel like I’m constantly battling them to charge me their advertised rates. You can talk to 4 different people and they will all tell you 4 different things. It’s been a maze for us.

    • To your comment, Ian: For some reason my neighborhood in upper Mont. Co. was among the first to get FIOs. It was an easy decision at the time to switch from Comcast to FIOs for my TV, Internet, and phone service . But whenever I described how FIOs was not problem-free, and that there were aspects of Comcast’s service I missed and liked better, more than a few people (who didn’t have, and couldn’t get, FIOs, at least at that time) were ready to jump on me. I’m also aware that FIOs continues to be “the thing” in terms of Consumer Reports’ ratings. While, no, I haven’t been dissatisfied enough to switch back to Comcast, I still remain a bit mystified at all the ballyhoo about FIOs and frankly feel it’s somewhat overrated. And rest assured, you will DEFINITELY pay well for the service and experience regular price hikes in line with or exceeding anything you’d experienced with Comcast or another provider.

  8. There’s always Direct TV in Frederick. We’ve been happy with it for years now. Though I know it’s not an option for some people depending on their condo or hoa rules for the dish.

    Like

      • Not sure, Direct TV’s internet product is DirectWay which is expensive, un-reliable, and I’m not even sure they still offer it. But since they are owned by Verizon, you can get some kind of bundle that includes Verizon DSL, Verizon home phone, and Direct TV all in one bill for a discounted rate. But we just do DirectTV and DSL though since we don’t really use a land line.

      • About a month ago I was talking to a Verizon employee who works out of the Frederick shop, and installs Fios in Montgomery and Howard counties. I asked him when Fios was coming to Frederick county, and he said no time soon if ever. He said that Verizon is testing a new product in areas of Texas that is based on cell phone tower wireless technology. He said TV And internet run off of it, I don’t know about landline phone. It’s supposed to be the same as Fios only without the fiber optic cables to run which he says is a pain. He said so far so good, so if all goes well thats is what we will get in the coming years instead of Fios. Unless Comcast blocks that too.

  9. Change of topic: I am going to need a custom decorated cake for a special occasion. I know Costco and some of the grocery stores do cakes, but they tend to have a book of designs, you pick one and that’s it. I don’t want that. I want a bakery that can do a true custom cake from a design I provide them. I want real butter cream frosting, not the sugar/lard stuff, really good moist cake, maybe with a fresh fruit filling.

    So….who do I go to???

  11. Not sure what everyone’s obsession with Chili’s is…there are several great places in downtown Frederick like Cacique which bury a chain such as that.

  12. Not sure if this is the place for this question. But can anyone tell me the location and donation times for a food bank in Frederick? I’ve been accumulating donations and missed giving it to the boy scouts. Thanks!
