December 2010 Events in Frederick County

Well, here we are, already in to another month.  My, how time flies!   December is usually a month full of  events around here so I’d be grateful for all the help I can get.  Leave a comment with anything you hear about or want us to know about that is going on this month.  Here are a few that I’d like to feature:

On December 2, 7, 16 and 21, enjoy the Mystery of the Christmas Star at the Earth and Space Science Laboratory.

Journey back 2000 years to Bethlehem as we seek to discover a scientific explanation for the Star sighted by the wise men. We’ll investigate possible dates for this occurance, and look at recorded sightings of significant astronomical events during this timeframe. We’ll see which of these signs in the sky could have been remarkable enough to cause the wise men to travel across the desert from Babylon to Bethlehem. This modern retelling of the Christmas story is sure to charm and captivate audiences of all ages.

First Saturday happens on three straight Saturdays this month.

Enjoy a December full of First Saturdays with businesses open late every Saturday in December until Christmas! On December 4th, the fun will feature a Holiday Recipe Tour, free hot cocoa and more.  December 11th and December 18th will have shoppers humming along to great holiday tunes while shopping late till 9PM.  Enjoy live music, guest artists and exhibit openings every First Saturday from 5 – 9pm!

Check out a Candlelight Ghost Tour of Frederick on Saturday, December 4th.

There are several Santa Trains on the weekends this month (scroll down to December) at the Walkersville Southern Railroad.

Enjoy the classic ballet The Nutcracker at the Weinberg on the 10th, 11th and 12th.

A Frederick holiday tradition in its 31st year featuring guest artists from New York City Ballet. This year, we’re excited to welcome back guest artists Megan Fairchild and Andrew Veyette, principals with New York City Ballet, who will be dancing the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. We are also proud to once again welcome back to our stage Alexander Ritter, former soloist with Suzanne Farrell Ballet, Boston Ballet and New York City Ballet, who will perform the role of Dr. Drosselmeyer. Cast is subject to change.

The Kris Kringle Procession is on December 10th.  This is apparently a new date so mark your calendars.  And while I was checking out the Celebrate Frederick website, I saw this page for other holiday events.

Rediscover the wonder of the holidays in downtown Frederick, where, amid magnificent historic architecture, festive decorations, fine dining and shopping, you’ll discover seasonal events for all ages and interests. From our regionally-renowned Candlelight House Tour to our old-world European, Kris Kringle Procession, count on an experience that will prove magical for you and yours.  Click on an event below for more information…

  1. We went to the festival of lights last year (it’s tomorrow Dec. 3 at 7 pm at City Hall). It was kinda fun to get in the holiday spirit (if not a wee bit cheesy). My friends who don’t live in Frederick always joke that our downtown is just like Stars Hollow (from Gilmore Girls) and this event is such a Stars Hollow event. 🙂

  2. Anyone participating in the 12 Bars of Christmas this Saturday? Just wondering how well attended and how well behaved everyone is. It sounds like fun if the bars do something special for the attendees.
