July 2010 Events in Frederick County

I just realized that tomorrow is the last day of June so I’d better get right to the July events!  As always, feel free to add any event that I’ve missed in the comments section.  And check the Frederick Tourism calendar of events for a more complete list.

The Downtown Frederick Partnership is sponsoring two events downtown on July 3rd.  First is the Great Frederick Float from 5-8 along the Carroll Creek Linear Park:

Begin your Independence Day early with The Great Frederick Float, Saturday, July 3rd from 5 – 8pm!  Enjoy children’s activities, music, dancing, and A BOAT PARADE & CONTEST!! Prizes to be awarded!  Click here to download Boat Application Form Individuals, organizations, companies, or families can enter a non-motorized boat into the contest.  Decorate your boat in Red, White, and Blue and compete with your friends, neighbors, and the Downtown Frederick community!  Entry deadline is June 30, 2010.  Great fun for everyone! The Great Frederick Float entertaiment will include 9 Lives, Citizen’s Brass Band, DJ Tyler Joyce, The Great Frederick Float Divas, and Jessica Bowers.

Please note that the entry deadline is tomorrow!

Then from 5-9 PM is First Saturday with the theme Great American Main Street:

Celebrate Downtown Frederick’s distinction as a Great American Main Street as named by the National Historic Trust for Preservation.  After visiting the Great Frederick Float, try your hand at old-fashioned game stations located througout downtown.  Live music, guest artists and exhibit openings complete the evening!

Head to Baker Park on the 4th of July for Frederick’s 4th.   Check out the chili cook-off,  the entertainment line-up,  the kids events and the yummy food available.

Head over to Harry Grove stadium for one of many Frederick Keys home games in July.

Don’t forget about the two Alive @ Five happy hours in July and the three Sunday Night Concerts in Baker Park this month.  Also, Thursday mornings at the Baker Park Bandshell is the Summerfest Family Theatre:

From clowns and magicians, to Emmy-awarding winning musicians and puppeteers, the Summerfest Family Theatre has brought high-quality entertainment to Frederick youngsters for over sixteen years!
From a modest beginning highlighting three programs throughout the summer, the series has grown to feature eight, full-length performances by some of the most sought-after children’s performers in the region.  Kids’ sensations Laurie Berkner and Milkshake have both been part of the series, exposing more children than ever to the magic of the performing arts.

July 17th and 18th is the Reggae Festival at Linganore Winecellars.

On July 31st,  The Historical Society of Frederick County is holding an event called Swing in the Garden.  Thanks to Duane for the info:

The Historical Society of Frederick County invites everyone to its Swing in the Garden event on Saturday, July 31 from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Historical Society’s beautiful Heritage Garden, 24 East Church Street in Frederick.

Over the past several years the annual summer fundraiser has offered themes from the Roaring 20s to the Fabulous 50s. This year, it is transformed to celebrate the great music of the entire Big Band era. Swing in the Garden will feature the Star Spangled “Little” Big Band, which will provide an eclectic mix of music from the days of the Charleston to the decade of the Frug. The event also will feature delicious hors d’oeuvres, decadent desserts, and a cash bar.

Frederick’s own Star Spangled “Little” Big Band is a Bassie-style jazz band that has played in Frederick County and throughout the region for more than a decade. Comprised of local musicians and singers, the band is dedicated to keeping the Big Band and Swing experiences alive. They have a reputation for bringing audiences to their feet.

Event tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Museum of Frederick County History in Frederick or by calling 301-663-1188×108. Sponsorship opportunities also are available, and all proceeds benefit the Historical Society’s many educational programs.

The Historical Society of Frederick County is a 501(c)(3) educational organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the county’s important heritage with those of all ages and backgrounds. For more information about Swing in the Garden and other upcoming activities, visit www.hsfcinfo.org/events. Come out on July 31 for the party of summer!

  1. Sunday July 4th – join us for the newest tradition in Frederick – The 4th on the Farm
Tots2Tweens is proud to sponsor this event and with the help from tons of local businesses we are able to grow this event from last year. With huge thanks and help from Key 103 and 106.9 The Eagle we’re so excited to bring local families an event that’s safe and fun for everyone!!
The 4th on the Farm hits Crumland Farms on July 4th from 12noon to 9pm.

The main stage will feature live music including: Sister Mary Elephant, The Freddie Long Band, The Reagan Years and the students from Frederick’s Rock School (they’ll be performing songs from the Beatles and AC/DC!!) Plus, there will be a 2nd stage with music from Kidsinger Jim and Magic Shows from Culler Magic.

There will be tons to keep all members of the family entertained: moon bounces, pedal carts, The Moo Choo Train, the trike track, the giant slide, The Ocean in Motion – an aquarium on wheels sponsored by Celebree Learning Centers and a Guitar Hero challenge – sponsored by Geico of Frederick – with the winner will get one month of free lessons from Frederick’s Rock School!! (Waaaayyy cool!) Think you’ll be hungry?? Enter in the wing eating contest being held on the main stage (contact Key 103 for details).

You can visit lots of vendors (over 25 right now), buy some great food and drink and lots more!!

Each family gets a treasure map – if you visit all the vendors you get a stuffed Tots2Tweens goody bag AND tons of prizes!!

Oh, and did I mention there would be FIREWORKS???!! That’s right, the north side of Frederick will have its very own fireworks show by the world-reknowned company Zambelli (who does the Frederick Keys fireworks show!)

Kids are FREE the entire event…adults are $5 each AFTER 4pm…so come early and pay nothing! There’s tons of parking and you can come and go as you like! No pets, please. And you can bring a picnic but no alcohol is permitted to be brought into the grounds. There will be food and drink available for purchase.

  2. I got this in an email:

Everyone is invited to celebrate Children’s Day at the Roger Brooke Taney House museum and historic site on Saturday, July 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Taney House is located at 121 South Bentz Street in Frederick.

Guided tours of the museum will explore life for a family of the middling class during the 19th century, and children will have the opportunity to experience how people then stored and cooked food, where they slept, and how they entertained their guests. Crafts and historic games will connect families to the lighter side of children’s lives in the 1800s. Visitors can try their hands at writing with a quill pen, playing a game of graces, and more.

Children’s Day admission and activities are free and ongoing throughout the day.

The Taney House is a program of the Historical Society of Frederick County. The museum explores the career of Frederick resident and U.S. Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney and local early 19th century life. The museum now features the temporary exhibit, “Chief Justice Roger B. Taney and the Dred Scott Case,” which examines the Supreme Court decision that became a landmark case in our nation’s history and fueled the flames of civil war.

For more information about this and other upcoming Historical Society programs and exhibitions, call 301-663-7880 or visit http://www.hsfcinfo.org/events.
