Fresh Food at Target

Just noticed a sign at the local Target (on 355 S) that on July 18th they will start carrying “Fresh Foods.” We welcome this because we only live about 3 miles from that Target, but we’re really curious what kinds of foods they’re adding.

Anyone been shopping at a Target before? Isn’t there one in Hagerstown with Produce?

  1. I was just in there today, too, and saw that. I was trying to figure where exactly they’d put a new department like that. Every department already seems pretty crammed. No sign of shelves being emptied or moved around anywhere. I was actually in there buying grocery items today because I could get those and the non-grocery things I needed – and I just don’t like Wal-Mart. So if I could get fresh foods there as well, I’d do it.

  2. I wish we had a Super Target. I wonder if it’s becoming one?

I love grocery shopping at Target, it’s just an all around pleasant experience (and quite inexpensive too).

    • I was buying several grocery items there today myself. I can use the military commissaries but things like coffee (the brand we always buy) and other items are just as inexpensive at Target as they are at the commissary. And I can get the non-grocery items I need at the same time for less than the bigger grocery stores charge for them – like grooming and make-up things, cleaning items, and more. We lived in VA for a time and they do have Super Targets there, but I never had the chance to go in one.

  3. Technically, the sign says “Fresh Groceries” with a picture of produce. I for one am pretty excited about the idea of fresh (non-Giant) groceries so close to home.

  4. I’m with the above poster…where will they put the produce? I do wish Frederick had a Super Target- the one in Leesburg is awesome! Super Target and Trader Joe’s..that’s all I’m askin’! LOL!

  5. I was in Target a week or so ago and noticed a sign in the grocery area saying that they were going to expand it. They could bump out the back and side of the store, but I haven’t heard that they were going to go that far with it (that would be nice, though!).

I thought the Target in Germantown was supposed to be a SuperTarget (it’s certainly big enough), but the grocery area doesn’t have produce (at least it didn’t the last time I was there, which was awhile ago). I’ve heard the Target down at the Rio in Gaithersburg has some fresh meats and produce now, but again, haven’t actually been there yet to see that, either!

  6. Yes, the Target @ RIO has fresh food. Some produce, breads, cheeses and such. The selection is not huge but fine. I’d also love to see a trader joe’s 🙂 but I’m already really happy with Aldi.

  7. If folks are looking for “Fresh” meats and produce with excellent prices, you should check out HMart in Gaithersburg off of Lost Knife Rd behind Lakeforest Mall. (Also Trader Joe’s in same area.)

    • HMart is great for produce, huge selection! It’s almost like shopping in a foreign country, but it’s amusing and the prices are fantastic- a must stop when I head that way for Trader Joe’s- they’re practically back to back. I forgot to add before, an added bonus to the Super Target in Leesburg, VA (which is practically a full grocery store)- nice big wine aisle!

  8. All of the grocery stores in VA are allowed to sell wine and beer. I wish MD would do the same as well. It’s also ludicrous that we can’t have wines shipped here. I have them shipped to an address in VA when I want certain wines. VA wineries aren’t afraid of the competition.

  9. Most wineries in MD are highly annoyed at the shipping laws as well. It’s not fear of competition; it’s slogging through “traditional” laws and powerful lobbies. It doesn’t help that the Fred Co. liquor board were all born in 1745. Or close =P. People are paranoid some underage kid is going to order a case of cab for some wild teen party. *sigh* Someday maybe we will be able to ship.
And hooray Target! Hope it’s true.

    • I’ve heard the thing about kids ordering alcohol on-line. Please. If a kid has a credit card to order liquor on-line then the parents need to deal with that and leave the rest of us “of age” people alone!

  10. I, too, wish that grocery stores could sell wine and beer in MD. Depending on locality, though, there is some limited wiggle room under the law. For example, unless a very recent change was made by the county liquor board , sales of beer and wine in grocery and drug stores have always been permitted in Talbot County, MD, where I lived for many years. Everyone did just fine under this arrangement (except, perhaps, for beer & wine store owners). And everyone seems to be doing fine inVA and enjoying the convenience. So, while hardly an issue to fret about, I’ve never understood the reasoning behind MD’s decision to be different.

  11. i work at this target so i can clear some things up.

Fresh Produce is mainly what is being added. We’ll also be expanding the market area a little more, we’ll have some steak and stuff, not a huge ammount more, but some. The new produce stuff is going where electronics is now. Electronics [which is my departament, my name is Jeremy, i work alot of mornings.] is moving to where pets/sports is now. Pets is moving in between chemicals and HBA, and HBA is gonna lose some aisles but i think they are extending them to make room for most of it. Stationary is gonna be cutting down and where entertainment used to be will be some of Housewares. I forget what happens to the middle of the store, but if its still up i can check the floor plans for a general idea. They’ve started to shift stuff now, and started to move things around.

If you wanna see the fresh produce stuff you can checkout Hagerstown, i think they’ve had their remodel already.

Stop in and say hi sometime, i like when people come to see me at work.

  12. I haven’t been to Target in a week or two and they were still working on the remodel then. Does anyone know if the grocery section at Target is open yet?

  13. It’s all open now. It was open when I was there on Sunday. My son is scarfing down the Apple Streusel bread! Watch the pricing…..bananas at first appeared to be priced at 19 cts/pound, but it’s 19 cts/banana. The cash registers were still having a hard time with all of the stuff. Seemed a decent enough selection of things, especially for quick items. I’d definitely use it if I was in there anyway to buy other things, and save a trip to another store.

  14. It’s not quite as big as a Super Target in terms of the amount of groceries, but I think it’s safe to say you could find most of the things on your list there. I don’t know if it’s enough to do all your grocery shopping at Target, but like Gypsy said, if I’m there I will probably just do it all in one spot.
