  • [...] Discussion Downtown Happy Hour? [...]

  • Alright, it’s that time again. Where is the cheapest gas in Frederick. I got gas for $2.71 at the Sunoco on 40 two days ago, but I swear they upped the price right after I finished gassing up.

  • That $2.71 sure beats anything I’ve seen just lately, though I haven’t gotten by Costco in the last couple of weeks. Anybody know what gas is at Costco now? Does any place in/around Frederick ever beat their price on gas?

  • We’re Costco members, but I have seen prices lower on the Golden Mile and as close as the Wawa on Ballenger Creek/Crestwood (I think the only Wawa in town?). I’ll check tomorrow.

  • I went by Costco this morning and regular unleaded was $2.79.

  • Does anyone know the name of the newish pizza place in Mt. Airy with a woodburning pizza oven? I think I remember an article about it either in the News-Post or Frederick Magazine about a year ago.

  • A hike tomorrow …

Sorry I forgot to post this sooner!

  • Any things on maybe setting up a BBS or forum on here? Just a thought…

  • I did have a google group set up but it didn’t get used much.

  • AUTO BODY WORK in Frederick?

Hi there! My husband and I are brand-new residents of downtown Frederick. Sadly, one of our cars got hit while parked and we now have to get some body work done.

Can anyone recommend a place to go?

    Thanks so much!

  • ShortFatKid, its always easier when its straight up linked from the main site. But, thats just me.

  • I used to have the google group linked into the sidebar and even had the most recent messages updating by RSS in the sidebar to. The group is still live and I can definitely link it back in if you all think it would be useful?

  • Has anyone tried the new Miyako at FSK mall - is it as good as the one on the Golden Mile? TIA!

  • Kathy, I just had a friend get his car back from Advanced Collision Repair Specialists on Rosemont. I know he got a good deal of work done for a very good price, and was quite happy with them. You may check ‘em out, at least get a quote to see if its fair.

  • K, some friends of ours have been to Miyako a few times and really like it. What is TIA? This is Africa?

  • I can answer that Jim. It means “thanks in advance”.

  • Thanks, Liz . . . in advance. :)

  • Has anyone heard of any of the opening dates for the Carroll Creek shops…Greene Turtle, Five Guys and the Japanese Steak House?

    Thanks all….

  • Well, according to this website (not sure how reliable it is), The Greene Turtle is opening late July:
    http://www.mdparty.com/venues/default.asp?c=7919

I can’t find anything on the others yet.

  • Thanks Liz……

Did anyone attend the Alive@Five this past Thursday? I would love to hear thoughts on like the lack of food vendors and the really long beer lines….(GREAT JOB by Brewers Alley considering how many people they had to serve) but maybe we need Barley & Hops to get involved, or Wild Goose as well? Five Guys was the only food vendor and it was hot dogs only. Where was Venuti’s and their pizza, like last year?

Great turn out though, the Creek was packed!

  • Thank you very much for your response, Patrick. We will check it out!

  • I am the only one angered by our switch over from Adelphia to Comcast? What has really changed? We pay $10 more per month and we have the same lacking channel lineup. My parents live just over the border in Montgomery County and have Comcast. For their dollar, they get so much more. Included in their premium, HD service, which is what I have in Frederick, is the new Tennis Channel, NFL Network, NBA Channel, Comcst Sports HD, MLB Extra Innings, WGN Chicago, style, WDCW HD to name a few. Why is is the we pay the new increased price for the same Adelphia service? Where is the Comcast service for Frederick that everyone else seems to be getting. I feel scammed, anyone else?

  • Sean-I agree, I have had numerous problems with Comcast since the switch, the price jump being one of them. I have my internet through them too, and my service has been terrible since about March. My connection will get very slow several times a day. Comcast has come out a few times now to “fix” the problem, but it never seems to work. I never had any problems with Adelphia and I paid less.

  • KP- I didnt even dive into the Internet issues but that is a sort point as well. I also forgot to mention that in MoCo Comcast offers nearly twice as many On Demand options as in Frederick. I guess we have to hope for Verizon FIOS to find their way up here.

  • I do Direct TV but I haven’t always been pleased with them either. Right now I pay about $30.00 a month for local and kids channels (no MTV, FX, SciFi, etc.).

I do ineternet through comcast though. I hope they dont mess with that b/c its cable or dial-up for me (no dsl in my area).

  • Does anyone know if we fellow Frednecks ever get Verizon FIOS ?

  • i sure hope so. in my latest call to Comcast yesterday, the fun continued. They told me i have been payin an extra 5 dollars every month for no reason even though its on my bill. Also, they told me we get NFL network and tennis channel etc as part of the “Sport Package” but then he said “Oh, thats not available for you” I asked when we could expect any upgrade to our service and he had no idea. I asked why they took away our free movies on demand, again… no idea. Comcast basically has “no idea” and I guess thats the problem.

  • It seems like Verizon already has some of the fiber infrastructure in place around Frederick. I’ve noticed Fiber and PON’s on most of the overhead lines I’ve observed. I’ve also seen orange conduit sticking out of the ground (a great sign) on 85 around english muffin way. I have not seen any activity in neighborhoods. I had FIOS when I lived in Germantown, and I can tell you that IT IS the best internet service I’ve ever had, and their customer service was much better than comcast’s. I would love to see them start digging in neighborhoods soon - it took about 3 months from when they began digging for my house to be lit.

C’mon Verizon, give us Fiber, we need choice!

  • I may be moving to Urbana soon, and I have been trying to get info on FiOS. I have it now (in MoCo), and absolutely love it. With Urbana being fairly new, don’t you think verizon would have buried the fiber optic cable already?

  • You would think that they did in fact bury the fiber. Take a look at any type of telephone poles you see around there, if there is orange conduit going up the pole then there is a good chance you are wired. I’m not sure what Vz’s ultimate plan is, but it seems like they are more interested in working in other area’s.

  • I should have mentioned… just because cables are there does not mean that they are lit or will be any time soon. Nobody but Verizon knows when that will happen.

  • that’s too bad, with frederick becoming more populated, you would think they would be quick to offer it, being such a superior product to satellite or comcast (now that adelphia is gone). i’ll keep hoping…..

  • Never mind Verizon broadband. I can’t get them to come out and fix their broken lines out in Middletown.

  • Great idea for a Web site…I’ll be visiting frequently.

  • CANOE TRIP ON THE POTOMAC

On Saturday, July 14, the C&O Canal Association is sponsoring a canoe trip on a Frederick County section of the Potomac River. The group will paddle from Brunswick downstream to the mouth of the Monocacy River. Those interested in participating should contact Barbara Sheridanefor further information at 301-752-5436 or membership@candocanal.org.

  • Business meeting venue

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced location for holding a workshop on a Saturday for 30 people?

  • Debbie,

Either of the Holiday Inns (either FSK or on Rt 40) are fairly reasonable and have decent conference facilities. Brewers Alley and Dutches Daughter are also set up for conferences on the second floor and the price isn’t too steep, if you are looking at a venue with better food service.

    Frog

  • The Hampton Inn @ 270 is reasonably priced–they have several mid-sized rooms (Monocacy, Catoctin) that can comfortably seat 30.

  • Did anyone else’s power go out during that storm last night? We are at my husband’s office/lab now so that we can take showers. I didn’t see a single Allegheny Power truck along the way either, although we have reported the outage several times.. It’s been out since about 10:30 last night and it’s now 12:15 PM.

  • We’re transplants from upstate NY and already thinking about not being able to get Buffalo Bills games in our living room. Any suggestions for sports bars or one that perhaps is geared toward the Bills??? Go Skins!

  • You may try the Canal Bar has there TV’s dedicated to football on Sunday and you may be able to get them to turn the bills game on one of them. You can also try the Glory Days and Beef O’Brady’s.

  • The Bentz Street Sport Bar may be an option also.

  • I am a transplant from the Midwest, and am looking for 750 to 1500 SF for my community acupuncture clinic. I would love to take over the lease on an abandoned building and turn it into a healing space which provides care for the community. I don’t know the area all that well though, yet. I thought I might learn more about where abandoned buildings in Frederick county are located through this format…do you drive past some eyesores that you’d like to see renovated? If you can provide information such as where they are, I’m interested in exploring the possibility of taking over “dead space”. Warmly, Jessica

  • Can anyone give me any advice on “In the Streets”?
I reserved a spot this year for the food vending. I’m new to the area and never been there.

  • Just wondered if anyone could tell me where the affordable Yoga classes are in Frederick. I haven’t had much luck finding any using the pc.

As I have gotten older, I have gotten less focused and think that Yoga may help me.

Thanks in advance for your time.

  • I think city or county does yoga classes. Check out http://www.co.frederick.md.us/documents/Public%20Works/Parks%20&%20Recreation/FallRecreater.pdf

  • Frederick Young Professionals Networking Group??

I have lived in the Frederick area for the last 2 years. I am a thirty something and love living in the area. I have been searching for a social/business networking group for young professionals (25-40 year olds)in Frederick and have come up with nothing. Therefore, I am considering starting a Frederick Young Professionals group for business and social networking. You know the drill - meet once a month plan events…

Would this be something others would be interested in??

Even if we could get 5-10 people to start I think it could be hugely popular. We all know there are many young professional families in the area and a business/social networking group would be awesome and helpful on many fronts.

  • My daughters first birthday is coming up and I’d love to have her birthday party in a Rec Center type place with a kitchenette so I don’t have to have it catered. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks!!

  • Community Wireless Network

I’ve lived in Frederick for almost a year now. It’s a great place to live. I work from home most of the time and when I’m not working from home, I’m on the 270 headed to DC.

I’d like to partner together with a local businesses and local townsfolk to a community wireless network that can be used freely by all to supplement the existing Internet choices we have thus far. It will be a grass roots effort, but I think I could get a lot of support for it. Any thoughts?

  • Does anyone know of any co-ed softball teams in the Frederick area? (age 18-?) Looking for a team that will begin in Spring 2008. Thanks

  • I copied this off another list group today, and thought it was worth sharing here:

“I wanted to ride into the city today with my little girl to go to the library. So I checked the ordinances first just to be sure of the law. You aren’t allowed to ride anywhere inside of Baker Park and must ride on the streets in the historic district. What I wanted to know is, do people agree with this? I had no clue about the Baker Park part. I understand the streets inside the city. I wouldn’t want a bike riding by me on the sidewalks by the stores. But Baker Park? Being fellow Fredericktonians, I just wanted to know what you guys thought about that.”

  • I think I have seen people riding bikes in the park before.

  • I had a terrible customer service experience at Passion Nail Spa in Urbana today. I don’t recommend them (services are about $1 more and 100% better at City Magnolia by the old Turning Point Inn). I had an appointment and had to wait 40 minutes with no apology then I had a very hard time getting past the hysterical workers to leave without getting the treatement! The wind picked up the door as I opened it and the owner shreiked “Thanks for slamming my door!” It was weird and pretty low rent behavior.

But it got me thinking about how great the customer service is in the new shops, Horse of a Different Color (check out the shoes! and the house decorations for the holidays!) and the new pet food store (sorry I don’t recall the name, but the owner is very well versed in her products and is very nice!). Even the people in the Giant are open and friendly. I’m looking forward to the rest of the boutiques and shops that are coming in. I hope the attitude of their neighbors will rub off of them.

I hope we get Verizon Fios soon !!!

  • For those who are interested, I recently came accross the website for McCutcheon’s and saw some really cool designs for their expansion plans along Carrol Creek. Check it out…

  • What happened to LoneStar Steakhouse?

  • The one over by the mall (kinda) near the old go kart track? Is it closed?

  • Good question. I just drove by there and the signs are all off the building. I couldn’t stop this time, but I’ll see if I can tell anything later this evening. It sure looked deserted driving by. I don’t think they are affected by Pargo’s closing and the subsequent building that will be going in there, but maybe they are.

  • [...] Discussion More On A Changing Frederick [...]

  • Am I the only person who thinks it stinks and is a little scary that they are putting the guy who was in charge of the veteran’s hospital debacle in charge of the super bugs at Ft. Detrick?

  • Merry C. That’s a good question, but I don’t think you have anything to be afraid of. He’s not going to be in the Bunny Suit handling any bugs.

  • He wasn’t handling patients, either, you know what I mean?

    ; )

  • I received the following via email and thought I would share it …

  • I’m having the darndest time finding a good spot for breakfast in Frederick these days. I’m trying to avoid the excess of Waffle House, Cracker Barrel or Double T Diner, but I usually want more than just a bagel. The Village and West Side Cafe were my favorite options, but I’ve been stumped since they both closed. Any recommendations?

  • Tam, check out the FNP review for the new Eastside Restaurant (formerly Stateside) on E. Church St. Sounds promising!!

    http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/art_life/display_ent.htm?StoryID=68201

  • Panera has great breakfast food. Their baked egg souffles are delicious, plus they have fruit cup, pastries and bagels. Right now they have a gingerbread bagel that is really yummy.

Also, Starbucks now serves breakfast sandwiches and other breakfast items.

  • Eastside sounds like just what I’m looking for. But not open on Sunday! I’ll have to get up there the next time I’m off on a weekday and talk to them about that…

  • I like Mountain View Diner on the Golden Mile for a tasty breakfast that’s not overpriced. Who wants to pay $32 for eggs or pancakes?

  • I’m new to the area - where can I take my (inner) child sledding without hitting (a) a body of water or (b) oncoming traffic? Also, can anyone suggest a sled or toboggan for a large-sized adult?

  • Thanks, Lizfrog, for the link to the Eastside Restaurant review — I’ll have to give it a try.

  • joules
We usually go to baker park. Yeah there is a body of water there and a small hill but it is great for little kids. The hill next to the Schiff. house and the church is the biggest one and you wont go far. Im suprised there is usually alot of people there when we show up.

If you want to spend money and have a great time -go to ski liberty or whitetail. I love doing the tubing! Go on a weeknight and its not as crowded as a weekend is.

  • Isn’t there a sledding hill at Pinecliff Park, along the Monocacy River, off of Reich’s Ford Road? As I recall, it looked like a heck of a hill and is set up for *serious* sledding/toboganning.

  • Yes, the Toboggan run at Pinecliff Park is a hidden treasure. I think they may even have a rope lift for the sleds, at least they did years ago.

  • For those lusting for FIOs over Comcast: Be careful what you wish for. After finally saying “enough is enough” regarding our ever-growing cable bill for TV and Internet, we ditched Comcast about 2 months ago for a Verizon FIOs bundle–TV, Internet, and phone (local & long distance), adding to the Verizon Wireless cell service we already had. (We live in Damascus.)

While I can’t complain about the FIOs Net service (maybe a tad slower than Comcast, but no outages so far), I can tell you that with the FIOs premium TV service, we’re paying more for less service than we had with Comcast, plus we now have many fewer FREE On-Demand movie choices. Already we’re getting mailings from Verizon warning of upcoming increases in charges for some premium channels in January…and exhorting us to SUBSCRIBE NOW to lock in the current rates!

Also, the local/long distance phone service that’s part of the FIOs bundle is costing us more than the non-FIOs Verizon local service with separate long distance carrier we had previously. As for customer service, while Comcast wasn’t exactly a joy to deal with, I never experienced difficulties and frustrations to match what I’ve encountered in trying to navigate through Verizon’s phone menu system. It’s virtually impossible to reach a live person when none of the menu choices offered by the computer voice fit the issue you’re calling about. Plus, the whole operation is extremely “compartmentalized,” if you do persevere and finally reach a person, chances are you’ll just be told “I can’t help you with this; you need to call X” and the whole drill will begin again. And, don’t look to Verizon’s website for any greater degree of customer-friendliness; you’ll have to drill down through the same kind of runaround–just in visual menu, rather than voice menu, form.

Just yesterday, I broke down and uttered words I thought I’d never speak: Gosh, I’m sorry we ever left Comcast.”

  • while I was anxious about FiOS TV, the more I read about it, the more I found there was no real advantage to it. Reading about the increases, I have no plan to switch over from Dish. While Dish can have expensive upfront fees for HD receivers, etc., I am quite happy with it, and I can wait to get a cheap receiver on ebay. However, FiOS internet is just so awesome, I will switch the first day available to me. I move in less than 2 weeks, and will miss FiOS. Perhaps I can get by on DSL (if available) until that day comes. I get easily frustrated with VZ’s cstomer service, too, but I have rarely had problems except with new installs of service. don’t like their ‘one-bill’ either. hopefully, this will be my last one for a while.

  • Brian, thx for reminding me that in my Verizon FIOs “rant” I forgot to mention the unfathomable Verizon One Bill. Any convenience offered by having multiple services on one bill is outweighed by the increased difficulty of trying to follow an already confusing billing format that now extends to 13 or 14 pgs.

  • Just got done with setting up my comcast internet appontment. very nice experience. hopefully, everything goes smoothly on installation day. the rep even found me a promotional rate for the first 6 months. i’m hoping the phone guy (vz) sees the comcast guy and speeds up fios availability!

  • Guy, I just found my way to this discussion group and there are some good posts here, keep it up! FYI the guy down the street with the POS black Jetta has had DSL for the past two years, you may want to call Verizon again. It’s much cheaper then Comcast and suprisingly it’s been reliable.

  • As a new resident to Frederick, I’m not familiar with the restaurants, etc. In preparation for the Superbowl this weekend, are there recommendations on the best wings (take-out) in Frederick? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, griff1.

I can’t help you with wings, sorry, but there are quite a few good DC-based web sites that are food oriented.

I use donrockwell.com a lot, and there is also the kink right from this site to a Food and Drink section: http://frederickmarylandonline.com/category/food-drink/

  • er….link, not kink….*hides her pink face* :-D

  • Are there any local websites with job postings for the Frederick, Hagerstown, Mt. Airy areas? All I can find are the national sites which dont offer much help. I really want to end my horrible commute and find a job close to home. Thanks in advance!

  • If you want to try and apply at any local gov. agency you could try - http://www.usajobs.gov/

They have several Ft. Deterick positions posted..but you have to pay attention to the fact if it is for a civilian or military only.

  • What’s your line of work Sean?

  • thanks for the link, I am a product/project manager for a technology/software firm but I am in Rockville so the commute is wearing me down

  • Hello everyone :)
My daughter will be attending Hood College next year and we are coming to visit Frederick in May. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good hotel , not too pricey, and child friendly ( we have a 7 year old)

    Thanks!
    Traci

  • Hi Traci,

Here’s a list of some hotels:

    http://www.frederick.com/business/subcat.asp?sc=87

I can’t really speak to prices because I’m not sure what the range is. My parents usually stay at the Sleep Inn when they visit. It’s close to restaurants and the mall and about 8-10 minutes from Hood.

Closest to Hood would be the Holiday Inn (Ft. Detrick) and the Comfort Inn (Red Horse) but I don’t know how nice they are.

The Holiday Inn Holidome has an indoor pool and is also close to the mall and restaurants.

Good luck to your daughter at Hood!

  • I AM CURRENTLT WORKING IN FT DETRICK AND LIVE IN BALTIMORE. I HAVE HOPES TO MOVE CLOSER; I WOULD PREFER GERMANTOWN, I WOULD LOVE TO LIVE NEAR D.C. DO ANYONE KNOW HOW THE TRAFFIC IS THERE IN THE MORNING ABOUT………5:30AM

  • From Germantown to Frederick in the AM you are going the opposite of most of the traffic so it shouldn’t be too bad. There are mornings when I do see it backed way up b/c of an accident or ice though.

  • What Guy said. Have fun laughing at all the folks stuck SB on 270 between the Monocacy River Bridge and the truck scales.

  • I’ve heard from a few friends that there will be a circus in Frederick at the fairgrounds on May 12 & 13. I’ve lived here for 3 years and never heard of a circus in Frederick. I would love to take my 3yr old. Can anyone verify if a circus is coming and where I could get tickets? Thanks for the help!

  • Yep, the Cole Bros. circus is coming. Get your tickets here.
