The FNP Wants Your Holiday Pictures

December 6, 2006 · No Comments

I saw this on the Frederick News-Post website. It seems the News-Post wants your photos of your holiday decorations for a slideshow for their website.

Do you have all your holiday decorations up? Did you set out a unique display this year? Did you trim the tree with more decorations than you ever thought possible? Is your house adorned with enough holiday decorations to make the Griswald’s jealous?

It doesn’t have to be overly elaborate or ornate, although it can be, they just want to see “how you decorate for the holidays”.

Sounds like fun, and I’m looking forward to the slideshow!

The Frederick Flood of 1976

October 21, 2006 · 6 Comments

The Frederick News Post has a nice video today about the flood of 1976. October 9th, 1976 to be specific. My 14th birthday!

This link will take you directly to the video

It is a rather large file, so be patient while it loads. It is worth the wait. I wouldn’t recommend trying it if you’re still on dial-up. I think you will also have to open it in Internet Explorer. We prefer Firefox, but the video doesn’t appear to work under this format.

Ball Road Big Dig

September 4, 2006 · No Comments

OK, so it’s not exactly as big a deal as the Chunnel, the Boston Tunnel or the Wilson Bridge, but in my neck of the woods this is newsworthy. I haven’t seen anything in the FNP about it, so I though I would provide my version of a photojournalistic update for anyone who might be interested.

In mid-July signs were posted along both ends of Ball Road announcing the road would be closed from 7/24 to 8/24 for construction.

Ball Road is a popular cut through from the Target/FSK Mall area to points east like New Market, Green Valley and Lake Linganore.

East bound traffic on Ball Road can proceed as normal if heading to destinations on Reels Mill Rd, but the road is closed immediately east of Reels Mill.

West bound Ball Road traffic can by-pass Ball Road and stay on Ijamsville Road to Route 80 (Fingerboard) or detour on Tabler Road to 355 just north of the Urbana city.

This what the Big Dig looked like yesterday:

Although the project was inconvenient for us personally, the delay has caused a lot of problems with school bus service. It was supposed to be done before school started, but word from the bus drivers (the three our kids have used thus far as the transportation department tries to figure out routes to get around the detour) is that it’s at least another 30 days.I would concur with that assessment.

Although this creek is usually just a trickle, it can be a problem in storms. I also think it’s necessary in anticipation of continued sprawl development in Urbana.

The Early Bird Gets Four Grand in Quarters

March 6, 2006 · 3 Comments

Here is another e-mail forward mentioning Frederick that I received. I’m not sure if it’s true, but it sure is weird.

Bill owns a company that manufactures and installs car wash systems. (Magic Wand Car Wash Systems, just in case you want to buy one.) Bill’s company installed a car wash system in Frederick, Md. Now understand that these are complete systems, including the money changer and money taking machines. The problem started when the new owner complained to Bill that he was losing significant amounts of money from his coin machines each week. He went as far as to accuse Bill’s employees of having a key to the boxes and ripping him off. Bill just couldn’t believe that his people would do that, so they setup a camera to catch the thief in action. Well, they did catch him on film!

That’s a bird sitting on the change slot of the machine

The bird had to go down into the machine, and back up inside to get to the money!

That’s three quarters he has in his beak! Another amazing thing is that it was not just one bird — there were several working together. Once they identified the thieves, they found over $4000 in quarters on the roof of the car wash and more under a nearby tree.

And you thought you heard of everything by now!!!

Can you confirm or deny this forward? If so leave a comment.

Jack Frost Visits Frederick

December 4, 2005 · 2 Comments

I'm not sure if it snowed last night (I was sleeping in my nice, warm bed), but everything was covered in ice when I woke up this morning. I took a picture of icicles hanging from a fence post in my backyard.

I know it's December but it seems to early for this. Besides, I thought the woolly bear caterpillars predicted a mild winter?
