Local Blogger Puts Photos on Display

March 11, 2007 · 1 Comment

I’m not sure if you have ever visited David’s blog (located in the blogroll) but is always been one of my favorites because of his great photography. Now David is putting that photography on display at the Weinberg.

David Raimist enjoys taking ordinary objects and making people look at them from a different angle.

Raimist, 43, of Woodsboro, likes to call attention to the patterns and textures of the veins in plants, the railing poking out of the staircase or the snow freshly fallen on bricks. He likes to point out things in objects that people don’t normally see.

Raimist currently has one of his photography exhibits on display at the Urbana Regional Library at 9020 Amelung St. He is the first in a series of up and coming artists to be displayed at the library. The show, which began Feb. 22, ends Saturday.

“Everybody kept saying I should (show my work)” he said. “I thought it would be interesting to try.”

So far, Raimist has only gotten positive feed back from the handful of shows he has done. His photos will be displayed next at the Weinberg Center for the Arts beginning April 7 during First Saturday Gallery Walk and ending Memorial Day weekend.

A little more info from David himself:

Hello! After another successful show at the Urbana Regional Public Library, I am working on my next gallery show - a solo exhibition at the Weinberg Center for the Arts that also plays host to local artists in an ongoing display of multimedia art exhibits.

Various images will be on display at the Weinberg beginning Saturday, April 7th. The exhibition will run through the Memorial Day weekend and will coincide with the 1st Saturday Gallery Walk celebration in downtown Frederick in April and May. While I am not having a formal reception I plan on being at the Weinberg during the 1st Saturday Gallery Walk each month. Learn more about the 1st Saturday Gallery Walk.

I will definitely stop by to see exhibition!

County Commissioner Starts Online Forum

March 10, 2007 · 4 Comments

The FNP is reporting that Frederick County Commissioner Kai Hagen is starting an online forum for residents of Frederick.

Frederick County Commissioner Kai Hagen, no stranger to a computer, is building a new online community.

He’s beginning with forums — a place for people to come, post messages, respond and start debates. Hagen is now adding members.

He hopes the new site will change the way commissioners traditionally communicate. The board spends a lot of time reading and responding to e-mails, written letters, and on the phone. Well-functioning forums can enhance those traditional communication methods, Hagen said.

“Not the least of which is what happens when a diverse collection of people, with a variety of perspectives and different types of information and experience, engage in a broader discussion,” he said.

Or, as the forums allow, a number of discussions on a number of different topics.

So far, nearly 100 have joined. No one will be excluded from participating as long as they are civil. And if they’re not, they may be blocked from posting, but will still be able to read.

All five county commissioners have access. Four have visited already and three are posting, Hagen said.

Two mayors and a few other elected municipal leaders are using the forum, as is one state delegate and two members of the county’s board of education.

“And there will be many more,” Hagen said. “Beyond them, so far, a few dozen citizens who have kick started the conversations.”

Sounds like a good idea. Here is what I think the link to the forum is http://kaihagen.com/forums.html although you cant really do anything there. I wonder if it isn’t open to the general public yet or maybe there is a different link.

I didn’t see a link in the FNP article, maybe I just missed it. Anyone out there know where the forum is located?

Sounds awesome!

Frederick County Resident Needs Help

February 2, 2007 · 1 Comment

From Frederick blogger RandomAnna

Crystal Yourtee of Brunswick, Maryland, is in desperate need of surgery to remove a debilitating cyst from her brain. Crystal, age 26, is dealing with crippling memory loss and pain, and needs constant care. Her mother, Pam Boore of Brunswick, was told that the surgery Crystal needs will cost about $150,000, and Crystal has no health insurance to cover it.

Pam has started a fund for Crystal. Please consider making a donation, however small, if you are a Brunswick resident, or even if you are not. Every dollar will help, so even if you can only spare $1, please try to contribute so that this young woman can have the cyst removed and regain a normal life.

Donations to help Crystal can be accepted at any BB&T bank branch–just say the donation is for Crystal Yourtee in care of her mother, Pam Boore. You can drop off a dollar bill (or more) in person, or else send in a check for more, like we did. Here is the mailing address and phone number for the BB&T branch in Brunswick:

BB&T
94 Souder Rd
Brunswick, MD 21716
(301) 834-5306

Mark any donations as “Crystal Yourtee Fund c/o Pam Boore.”

Sounds like a good cause. Hopefully you could spare a couple bucks and share this news with your freinds and family.

Frederick Teen Boxes Movie Director

December 2, 2006 · 2 Comments

I was reading Wired magazine when I ran across this article.

Web Geeks love to hate Uwe Boll, the German director behind the film adaptations of the video games The House of the Dead, BloodRayne and Alone in the Dark. Out of 350,000-plus films rated by users of the Internet Movie Database, Boll’s game flicks all rank in the bottom 100. “He’s a taint on the genre film community!” thunders Ain’t It Cool News. One angry viewer purchased uweboll.com and posted a single-line entreaty: “Please stop making movies.”

Last June, Boll decided he’d had enough. A onetime amateur boxer, he decided to challenge his critics to a fight. He issued a press release that was quickly posted and reposted on nearly every gaming and movie site on the Web: “If critics want to bring Uwe Boll down,” it read, “here is their chance to physically bring him down and have the entire world watch them do it.” Four courageous – or is it crazy? – souls stepped forward. Here are some images from the infamous night of boxing matches that has come to be known as “the Maneuver in Vancouver.”

One of the four contenders was Chance Minter, a 17-year-old from Frederick, Maryland.

Before the fight, Minter got pumped up by listening to the theme song from Conan the Barbarian on his iPod. “Boll’s really wild, more of a brawler than a fighter,” he says. “His jab is weak. He tries to get close so he can swing wide. I’m just gonna go out there and do my thing.”

Minter had never written anything – bad or good – about the director when he asked to take part in the challenge. Nonetheless, Boll waived the rules and let him in. Minter has six months of boxing experience, rendering him the most formidable challenger of the night.

The final fight begins. Boll is ferocious, maybe because his opponent has a modicum of fighting experience or maybe because he no longer needs to hold anything in reserve. Minter gets in a few good shots, but then seizes up. He stops moving and keeps his hands locked in front of his face. Boll goes to work on the teenager’s unprotected rib cage and kidneys.

“Move around, Chance! Hit back!” shrieks Minter’s mom, who accompanied him to Vancouver. As the Teutonic Terror doles out dozens of punishing body blows, a line from Conan comes to mind. It’s the scene where a loincloth-wearing Arnold Schwarzenegger describes every barbarian’s raison d’être: “to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women!”

Minter’s mom rushes to the ring to stop the fight, but it’s already over – Minter’s cornerman has intervened. She leans against the ropes, head in hands, as Paré declares Boll the winner by technical knockout.

Pretty cool! Read the whole article.

Now That the Hype is Over

September 27, 2006 · 1 Comment

I like to browse for random Frederick county bloggers. Every once in a while I stumble on something interesting.

I found RandomAnna a couple months ago and have dropped in from time to time to read what she had to say.

She made an excellent post about 9/11 on Sept. 11th. Personally, I was more than overwhelmed by the media hype and endless drivel and specualtion on the anniversary of that day. What I saw, or should I say, what the marketing guru’s in network television wanted me to believe, had nothing to do with the reality and angst I felt on 9/11/2001.

This post is exceptionally well written, in my humble opinion, and hit home to me. I hope you’ll drop in and read it.

The New Mayor Graded

The Washington Post has an interesting article on Frederick Mayor, W. Jeff Holtzinger and the current harmony at City Hall. The author interviewed the Frederick regulars (Dougherty, Djoken, McClement, etc.) to get an idea of how things are going for the new Mayor.

Frederick Man A Wireless Samaritan

June 20, 2006 · No Comments

Check this out …

Every day, roughly 225,000 calls are placed to 911 from wireless phones. These "eye-witness" calls report car accidents, health emergencies, street crimes, drunk driving, domestic violence and other dangerous situations that threaten human life or safety.

Tonight, at its 12th Annual Achievement Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., The Wireless Foundation will honor many of these individuals by recognizing them as "VITA Wireless Samaritans."

"With more than 200 million wireless subscribers in America — 70 percent of the entire population — emergencies can be reported as they happen, enabling first responders to take immediate, life-saving action," said Steve Largent, president of The Wireless Foundation in a release. "VITA honorees exemplify how wireless phones can save lives and fight crime. On behalf of the wireless industry, I salute the 2006 VITA honorees for their help in making a safer and stronger America."

The 2006 VITA Wireless Samaritan Award Honorees are:

Jim Addington from Frederick, Md., used the seat-back wireless service on a red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Baltimore to communicate with doctors on ground to help a woman who had suffered a life-threatening pulmonary embolism

Pretty cool for Mr. Addington. Read the whole story here.
