I read this on the WTOP web site, although it says it’s source is the Frederick News-Post (but I didn’t find it there):
Psychic abilities to be probed in Frederick

I went out this morning at 8 AM to test drive my daughter’s Mazda because she said it was making weird noises. I didn’t hear any noises to alarm me, but I did smell a distinct burning smell.
When we got back from Alive@5 at around 7:30 (my god, it was stinking hot and Liz & I were the only FredNets identifiable), I naturally took the goats out for a walk before going for a refreshing swim in the pool.
On our walk, I saw a large plume of smoke emanating from the side of the hill that is Camp Genstar. A large, billowing plume. Minutes before, I heard and saw fire trucks running up and down Ball Road. I called the Urbana VFD and told them that I thought the fire they were looking for was at Camp Genstar.
There are currently several engines down there and I spoke with one of the engine drivers and they told me they have everything “under control”.
Not speculating, but that property has been up for sale for about a year. I think that it’s probably just some kids who made a camp fire and didn’t put it out all of the way.

Well, last Wednesday’s storm and subsequent power failure did a number on my desktop computer here at home. Even though we are on a back-up battery and surge protector and I shut everything down, somehow we still managed to get fried. We replaced the tower and are hoping that the hard drive in the old one is OK. In the mean time, it’s a little frustrating to not have any of my contacts list or any of my bookmarks, especially the ones I use for this site. Slowly but surely all that will be restored. We were lucky though. Our power was only out about 12 hours, unlike some of our neighbors to the south.
Now, apparently yesterday’s excess heat may be the cause of the train derailment in Point of Pocks.
Has this recent bout of extreme weather affected you at all?
In other news, the Frederick News-Post is asking it’s readers to come up with the Seven Wonders of Frederick. What would you put on your list?

Patrick’s Irish Pub and Restaurant has posted that their forthcoming location in Frederick will be at 16-18 E. Patrick Street and that they are scheduled to open in July.
On the map it looks like this on the corner of Patrick and Market. Anyone know what this location currently is or was?
Thanks for the tip TK.

While doing research for the June Events post, I found out that the Taste of Frederick that was scheduled for Sunday, June 8th at the Keys Stadium has been canceled. I wish there was some sort of explanation, but so far I haven’t heard a thing. It’s too bad because if I recall, it was a pretty successful event last year and this year, the March of Dimes was supposed to be the beneficiary of the proceeds from ticket sales.

Kim submits the following tip that should be of interest to all you 270 commuters out there …
I saw on the State Highway web site that they have put out a bid for the replacement of Dual Single Span Bridges No. 10080 on I-270 over Dr. Perry Road. The replacement bridge will be built on the same roadway alignment. The single span steel girder bridge will be 80′ long and 127′ wide. The project also includes 0.24 miles of road work on Dr. Perry Road beneath the bridge. During construction a temporary roadway will be constructed within the median of I-270 to maintain all lanes of traffic on I-270. On Dr. Perry Road, two way traffic will be maintained in one lane through a flagging operation while roadwork is being done.
Now, they could change their minds and the plans (and though it bids on June 19th, it could get postponed, and who knows when the project would actually start), but I thought you might like to have the heads-up.
Glad to see improvements to 270, but that should add some time to my commute. They better add room for an extra lane while they are busting the bridge up. If not it’s pretty much a useless exercise. Here is the announcement from the Maryland SHA on the project in case you are interested.

The article Lizfrog recently mentioned about area food bloggers was published in today’s FNP Food section. Here is a snippet …
The Frederick Maryland Online blog covers many local restaurants, but is not a food-specific blog. Schmidt started the blog initially “because I was nosy” about happenings around town. Jim and Liz Hardy started contributing to the blog after it was established. “Guy tried to get others to write for the blog, and we’re the ones who responded,” said Jim.
Favorite restaurants in Frederick were an immediate and favorite topic of conversation among these local culinary cognoscenti. Van Bloem said, “Frederick has a much more sophisticated palate than we give it credit for.” Irani mentioned Clay Oven as a favorite, while Van Bloem expounded on length about her adoration of Lucky Corner. Jim Hardy agreed and suggested Viet Aroma as another favorite. Liz Hardy discussed Isabella’s and Cacique as among her pet restaurants.
All of these bloggers mentioned how much they love “scooping” news stories related to food around Frederick. Van Bloem wrote about the bakery Proof closing recently: “I had talked to two of the bakers about ordering a lemon cake for one of my staff, and they said they couldn’t because they didn’t know if they were going to be open tomorrow. I asked, ‘What do you mean, you don’t know if you’re going to be open tomorrow?’ and they explained that the bakery was going to be sold shortly.” She subsequently posted about the closure on her blog.
Meanwhile, the Hardys and Guy Schmidt rely on published stories, reader tips and their inquisitive eyes to publicize restaurant news. The Hardys recently wrote about walking by Venuti’s and discovering it has closed, while Guy posted about a new wine store that he learned of from a reader’s tip.
Really cool! Thanks to Rochelle Myers for bringing us all together. It was great meeting some other Frederick bloggers and food lovers. Also, just in case you haven’t done so already go visit the site’s of the other bloggers who were at the discussion …

I saw this article in the Frederick News-Post and it made me sad …
Anyone interested in buying a home facing foreclosure can save time and gas by boarding the Bargain Bus.
Long & Foster’s Mount Airy office launched bus tours three months ago for visits to foreclosed-on homes.
Sharon Crisafulli, who manages three Long & Foster offices, said the tour has been so far a hit. Mount Airy is in a four-county area, and the company puts on one tour a month. So far Frederick, Carroll and Montgomery have been visited. Howard County is next.
“People may say what a horrible thing we are doing, preying on these people (facing foreclosure),” Crisafulli said. “But the sellers are glad to see us working, trying to sell the home for them. It is in their best interest to get it sold.”
Participants get information beforehand about the properties and then get to visit each one. The company charters a 28-seat bus and visits about 10 homes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tourists get a gift bag with water and fruit.
“On the bus we have an attorney, a home inspector and a mortgage person,” Crisafulli said.
Also, kind of related is this article about the rise of crime in empty foreclosed homes. Sorry for the dose of bad news, I think I like the anti-smoking Playboy bunny at the cigar story post much better.

Liz turned to me earlier tonight and asked me if I thought this announcement from Urbanamaryland.com and Davidus Cigars was worth posting on FMO. Since it was Sunday, I figured it was post worthy.
The Urbana location of Davidus Cigars is hosting Playboy’s Miss June 2006 Stephanie Larimore on Thursday, May 15th from 4 to 7 PM. I am not sure what this Fort Wayne Indiana native is doing in little old Urbana Maryland, but I am pretty sure it has something to do with selling Cigars.
The essential questions:
AMBITIONS:
To put 100% effort into anything I do, whether it’s modeling, acting, fashion coordinating or owning a spa.
TURN-ONS:
Eye-contact, good manners, intelligence, confidence, a sense of humor, nice abs and a smile.
TURNOFFS:
Arrogance, materialism, smoking, spitting, bad hygiene, drug use, shallowness and laziness.
Turnoffs = SMOKING I’m pretty sure not too many guys will be smoking at the store when she’s there…

Wow, it’s been quiet around here this week! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been enjoying the weather this week. Sorry for the lack of posts.
Last night, Guy, Frog and I had the pleasure of a meet up, round table discussion at The Frederick Coffee Company with FNP freelance writer, chef/caterer Rochelle Myers. She had emailed us a few weeks ago about putting together this discussion for a feature she wanted to write about Frederick area food bloggers. At first I thought it was a mistake because I don’t have a food blog and this blog is not necessarily food-centric, but I figured she knew who she was emailing and, as it turns out, she’s a faithful reader of this site and realized that the restaurant posts are a big draw for readers and commenters.
The best part was that we also got to meet some of the area bloggers on our blog roll (the real foodie blogs) over there on the right side bar. Christine from Frederick Foodie, brought some of her soon-to-be world famous chocolate Chippa Chippa Bloem Bloem cookies for all of us. Janis from Dining Diva of Frederick County brought her enthusiasm for truth in local restaurant reviews, and frequent commenter Sarah of Eat Local Frederick/Eating in Season entertained us with her passion for local, seasonal food.
It was a very enjoyable evening with lively discussion, so much so that I have no idea how Rochelle is going to be able to pull enough together for the article. At several points during the evening, it seemed like we were all talking at once. Luckily, she had her recorder running and a photographer there to catch us all in our mid-sentence, hand-gesturing glory.
The article will come out either in next Wednesday’s food section or the following Wednesday, depending on when Rochelle gets done writing it. We’ll let you know. For a little taste of her most recent writing, check out Rochelle’s recent review of Quynn’s Attic.
