Free-For-All: Election Day

November 4, 2008 · 16 Comments

We here at FMO don’t care to get into political discussions.  But I am curious about how your voting experience was today.  Without mentioning who you voted for or the ballot issues in question today, I’d like to know if you encountered long lines while voting or if you had any problems with the process in any way.

We got there at about 8:30 and only waited in line for about a half hour from start to finish (at Centerville Elementary School in Urbana).  More importantly, our oldest daughter voted for the first time today.  For some reason, her absentee ballot never got to her so we had to go pick her up at school last night and get her back by her 11AM class this morning.  Other than that, all went smoothly for our household.

How about you?

New Header Photo for FMO

November 1, 2008 · 10 Comments

Last spring Frederick Maryland Online sponsor, Studio 11 Photography and Framing, was very gracious to donate a photo to place in the header of this site. But now that Fall is flying by and Winter is around the corner I think it may be time for a new header photo on this site.

I was thinking for this new photo I would solicit submissions from the the FMO readers. I know you all take awesome photos as evidenced by the FMO Flickr pool. So please send me a link to your Flickr, Photobucket, or whatever online service you use. Then I will let all the FMO readers vote on which one will be the new header.

The only rule is that it must be a photo of, or about Frederick and be family friendly. Please have all submissions in by Saturday, November 8th. Then voting will run for the next week. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks!

FMO Wins a Top Local Blog Award

October 10, 2008 · 9 Comments

I’m not exactly sure what this means, although I consider it an honor,  because truthfully  I’ve never heard of this particular website  but apparently, Frederick Maryland Online has won a Top Blog Award for 2008 from Search Maryland, ” the leading local directory of businesses, attractions, organizations and anything else related to Maryland”.

On the website, it states the criteria for local blogs considered for Top Local Blogs are:

* Blog must be authored by a Maryland resident or discuss issues specific to the state of Maryland
* Blog should be interesting and an entertaining read
* Blog should contain valuable or insightful information, a substantial portion of which is original in nature
* Evidence of a strong community following (i.e. comments, trackbacks, relationships with other blogs)
* Blog must not contain offensive or adult material

Thanks to all of you who satisfy the “strong community following” aspect of the criteria.  Personally, I think that’s the best part of this blog.  Click on the Search Maryland website link above to see other winners or to nominate other blogs that you know of that are specific to Maryland.

More Public Art:Mosaic Tiles

October 8, 2008 · 3 Comments

A couple weeks ago, Jim and I went to the Green Turtle downtown to watch the Redskins/Cowboys game.   I mention this because that day, I didn’t notice all the beautiful mosaic tiles set into the walkway between Court Street and Market Street.  Then on Sunday, I went for a walk downtown with RandomAnna and was pleasantly surprised by all the tiles, which are very beautiful.  The City of Frederick has the explanation for the art project on it’s website.

The City of Frederick is pleased to announce that another public art project has been completed and is available for the public to enjoy. Twenty-four beautiful tile mosaics in varying sizes have been installed along a path of blue stone and brick in Carroll Creek Park between Court Street and Market Street. Artist Deirdre Saunder, of Bethesda, Maryland, modeled the designs after water, given the location next to Carroll Creek. Having done a large portion of her other public art projects in mosaics, Ms. Saunder felt the medium lent itself well to the Frederick project, “…Mosaics afford the artist the ability to use color, the freedom to design intricately or boldly and most important, are virtually maintenance free, graffiti proof, frost-free and durable.”

Presedential Poll for Frederick Maryland

October 4, 2008 · No Comments

Jim asked for a poll to see how Frederick would vote in the upcoming elections and I thought it may be fun. So I’m breaking my own rules about no politics talk on this blog and posting a poll. The candidate listing is based on this information from Vote Smart.

The Next Public Art Project

September 11, 2008 · No Comments

Love them or hate them, it looks like these public art projects are here to stay.  From the Gazette:

First, the “Keys” stood tall, then, they had a “Ball,” and now, the Frederick Arts Council is going green.

The council announced its next project on Wednesday: the Frederick Festival of Greens. From Nov. 21-29, more than 200 decorated artificial wreaths and trees will be on display at the Frederick Arts Council’s Cultural Arts Center at 15 W. Patrick St., Frederick, for visitors to view and bid on through a silent auction. The display will coincide with several free performances, holiday movies and other events, according to Frederick Arts Council Executive Director, Shuan Butcher.

“This will be a nice, new addition to the holiday celebrations in Frederick,” Butcher said, noting that the festival coincides with the annual “Frosty Friday” event in downtown Frederick. “… This is another great way for the community to participate in art and is truly a festival, a celebration.”

Similar to the keys and baseballs, everyone is invited to decorate a wreath or create one from materials of their own. Unlike the two previous events, however, businesses are welcome to use corporate logos and items – such as gift certificates – on their wreaths and there is no registration fee for any entry. Participants cover the expense of all materials used for their creations.

Proceeds from these public art projects go towards grants by the Frederick Arts Council to fund art groups county wide.

For You Harley Fans (And a little self promotion)

September 3, 2008 · 3 Comments

If you love, have or want to buy a Harley-Davidson, head on out to Harley-Davidson of Frederick on Rte 355 on Saturday, September 6th for their open house and to check out the 2009 models.  From the 106.9 The Eagle website:

Join The Eagle at Harley Davidson of Frederick for their open house and demo ride the new 2009 models. Save 25 to 75% on selected MotorClothes and 25% off selected parts and accessories. Listen in on their maintenance and performance seminars. Don’t forget that Harley Davidson’s are fuel-efficient and can get 50 to 60 miles per gallon. We will be there and have the new game RockBand, courtesy of GameStop on hand for you to demo.

In other news (and shameless self-promotion), did you know that if you search Frederick, MD on Wikipedia, that this little ol’ website shows up in their “External Links” section (way at the bottom of the page)?  I don’t know about you, but I think that’s pretty cool!  There’s also a reference to FredRocks on there as well.  Thanks Wikipedia, for putting us in the mainstream!  There’s also some really nice pictures of downtown on there.
