VOLT is coming to the Frederick Keys Baseball Field and we are not coming empty handed. We are taking over the concession stand at 3rd base for one night only on Tuesday July 27.

New Sunday Parking Deck Rules

Beginning Sunday, August 7, 2010, a change in Sunday parking in all City Parking Decks will go into effect. The City of Frederick Parking Decks will offer free parking on Sundays from 8:00 AM until 2: 00 PM. At 2:00 PM the gates will be lowered and vehicles exiting after that time will need to pay $1.00. This change is being implemented as a result of the FY2011 Budget.

Apparently the Bombay Grill at 137 N. Market has closed (I swear it was open on Saturday). The windows are covered, but a notice is written that ‘Olives,’ an Italian restaurant, will be moving in soon.

Well at least the spot doesn’t seem like it will be vacant long.

Just like they did for Moms on Mother’s Day, Baltimore Coffee and Tea is giving away free coffee for Dads on Father’s Day. I got this email yesterday:

A.H. sent in a tip (thanks!) that the J&P Pizza in Urbana closed up recently. He writes:

According to the note on the door they were forced to close shop due to unfair escalated rent from the landlord and failed negotiations. They mention also that they plan to open a new Urbana location in the next year and in the interim will offer a ten percent discount to people from the area at their spring ridge and mount airy establishments.

In semi-related news I noticed the Pizza Hut on Rosemont looked like it closed. Can anyone confirm that?

New Downtown Farmer’s Market

The City of Frederick is announcing that a new Farmer’s Market will be located at the old Carmack Jay’s at 331 N. Market St.

A new farmers market is scheduled to open this summer in downtown Frederick. Will Morrow, of Whitmore Farms, announced the formation of the North Market Farmers Market, located in the former Carmack Jays parking at 331 North Market Street. The North Market Farmers Market will open on Wednesday, June 9th from 3:00-7:00 PM and will be held every Wednesday through October.”After a 52 year hiatus we’re bringing the Farmers Market back to Market Street,” stated Will Morrow of Whitmore Farm, and Market organizer. “The oldest and longest running Farmers Market used to be on Market Street. The original market was established in 1746 and served as the center of agricultural commerce for Frederick County for 212 years! Come on out, find some great locally raised food, visit with neighbors and check out the entertainment!”

The property owner, Douglas Development Corporation, has agreed to allow the Market to utilize the parking lot until a leased is signed for the building. Offerings will include local and regional fresh meats, fruits, vegetables, eggs, baked goods, cut flowers, plants, soap, fiber and yarn. In addition to traditional farmers’ market offerings, the North Market Farmers Market will also offer music and special events. In keeping with the dog-friendly atmosphere of downtown Frederick, dogs are welcome!

Progressive Dinner

The Downtown Frederick Partnership is holding another Progressive Dinner downtown, with proceeds to benefit the Partnership. The next dinner will be on Tuesday, June 15th. Tickets are $85.00 which includes tax and tip. A portion of the ticket is tax deductible. There will be four seatings between 5:30 and 7:00 with a limited number of people per seating. The menu sounds pretty good this time:

Appetizer Course: The Cellar Door

What Do You Miss About Frederick?

I was reminded reading the comment about Piano Bars about something I really miss about Frederick. I was just bored at work, killing time on a Friday and that comment reminded me about Sig’s Hide Away, a Frederick legend. We’ve only been living in town since 1989, but visited Sig’s on man occasions for a meal and to hear if anyone was singing at the piano. But that’s not what i really miss. I really miss Hana’s Korean restaurant next door. That was a true hidden jewel of Frederick. It was like stepping into the kitchen of the Korean Mother I never had (even though I don’t have a drop of Asian blood in my genes). Clay pots of Kim Chee brewing on the front porch, the best Bul-kogi ever and “rickshaw bread” (fried mung bean and sausage) that was to die for.

Sig’s and Hanna’s were both torn down for the new parking garage behind the Courthouse. What a shame. I think I saw Miss Hanna at the Chef Lin Buffet on Jefferson at lunch a week ago and wanted so badly to ask her if she’s planning on opening another restaurant, but I chickened out.

What about you: What do you miss about Frederick of five, ten or twenty years ago?
