On Monday, January 30th, Frederick’s own The Turning Point Community Acupuncture Center will be hosting a screening of a documentary at MDL Holiday Cinemas on Baughmans Lane. Co-produced by The Turning Point’s Jessica Feltz, the film, entitled Community Acupuncture: The Calmest Revolution Ever Staged,

follows six diverse community acupuncture patients and shows the impact of affordable acupuncture on their lives and communities. Lindstrom tells the story of the community acupuncture movement: how a small group of loud-mouthed, over-educated, under-employed activists and a massive group of ordinary people with average incomes revolutionized healthcare services by using large empty rooms, old recliner chairs, and two-cent needles.

All the information can be found here. Tickets are $10 and the stub can be redeemed at the Turning Point clinic for one free acupuncture session.

Doors at MDL Holiday Cinemas will open at 6:00 pm on January 30th, with the screening beginning at 6:30. Tickets for the documentary are $10 and are redeemable for one free acupuncture session at The Turning Point. Tickets can be purchased in advance at The Turning Point, 243 W Patrick Street in downtown Frederick. They will also be available in advance and at the door at MDL Holiday Cinemas.

There is also a very nice article in the FNP today about Jessica, the clinic and the documentary. I can’t think why I would need it but in the interest of full disclosure, I have been a patient at The Turning Point for a while now and was in the clinic the day the camera crew was filming scenes for the documentary, although I don’t think the camera ever made it over to me.

This is a great opportunity to support a local business owner and to perhaps learn about and try something new!

Some say it’s a myth. Some say it’s real. But this Halloween, best friends Holly and Peter are finally going to get to the truth behind the legend…if it doesn’t get to them first!

I love odd things and local legends, so when Patrick Boyton contacted me about getting the word out on his new children’s book it didn’t take much convincing. The Snallygaster is such a weird and unique beast, the Frederick area should be glad to have it’s legend hovering over us. Anyway, enough from me, here is the info about the book:

In 2008, Frederick author Patrick Boyton published Snallygaster: the Lost Legend of Frederick County, a historical account of the mythical, dragon-like beast said to inhabit Western Maryland. The book proved to be so successful, Boyton has followed it up with a children’s novel featuring the local monster.

Beware, the Snallygaster follows a pair of adventurous Middletown Middle School students in their quest to locate the mysterious monster rumored to live on South Mountain. Even though the story has a Halloween setting and deals with things that go “bump in the night,” Boyton insists that his chapter book is more spooky than scary.

“I grew up reading authors like Ray Bradbury and John Bellairs. I wanted to capture that nostalgic eeriness found in their children’s books,” Boyton said.

Beware, the Snallygaster will appeal to young readers who enjoy R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series, but their parents should be pleased that the supernatural elements in Boyton’s book are handled with more subtlety. “I tried to avoid anything gross or overly frightening, choosing instead to emphasize character and mystery” the author said.

Beware, the Snallygaster is available on Amazon now and will be available at Snallygaster Gifts and Turn the Page next week. And hopefully coming to other area stores and the library soon.

Hey there! It’s been a while. I’ve missed you. Since I last wrote on here I have moved to downtown Frederick and am loving being able to walk everywhere. I can’t remember the last time I gassed up my car. I walk to work and I walk to play. I even walk just for the heck of it. Because of all the walking, yesterday my daughter and I had the chance to visit the Farmer’s Market on East Street, something I had always driven past but had never stopped to check out. I went there with an empty back pack and soon loaded it up with juicy white peaches, blueberries, tomatoes and potatoes. There were some good looking loaves of bread, a booth with goat cheese and a guy selling fresh chicken. Fresh flowers were available for purchase as well. We moved on to the Stone Hearth Bakery and bought a delicious loaf of kalamata olive bread and then headed over to Shab Row Wine and Bistro for a glass of wine and a couple appetizers before buying a bottle of wine to add to my increasingly heavy back pack and heading home.

I’m looking forward to exploring Frederick with the fresh eyes of a new downtown resident! What are your favorite walking routes?

Knock knock! Is anybody home around here? I’m so very sorry it’s been so quiet lately. May has proved to be a very busy month for us but I wanted to let you know about an upcoming event at the Frederick Fairgrounds called Outlaw Jam. Tickets for this event, which will be on Sunday, August 1st, went on sale on May8th. Click here for ticket information.

For those of us of a certain age, the thought of being able to see the original surviving members of Bad Company is pretty exciting. Truthfully, if tattoos were as popular for teens in the ’70′s as they are now, I’d probably have Bad Company tattooed on my body somewhere. Along with Bad Company, the Outlaw Jam will also feature Blue Oyster Cult and a few other bands. Click here for the complete line up.

Pretty impressive line-up for our fair city, don’t you think?
