2009 September 27
by Liz

October is traditionally a very busy month here in Frederick and this month is no different.  Here are just a few of the events going on.  As always, feel free to leave a comment with any events that I haven’t mentioned.  For a more complete calendar of events, check out the Frederick Tourism website.

The first weekend of October is going to be packed full of events.  Starting Friday, October 2nd with Light the Creek and then In The Street on Saturday, October 3rd.

Stay downtown after In The Street for First Saturday.  This month the theme is Into the Night:

After In The Street go Into the Night in Downtown Frederick!  Kick-off the spooky season early with Halloween inspired activities throughout downtown!  The evening includes a paint-your-own-pumpkin patch, monsters, mummies and more!  The Halloween spirit will evoke you with pumpkins and scarecrows decorated by local merchants.  Stop by the Spooky Stations located throughout downtown…Find all of the body parts that fell off Freddy Frederick.  Don’t forget to say “Trick or Treat!” for sweets at participating locations (no costume required)!   Also, enjoy guest artists, exhibit openings and special activities at downtown’s many specialty stores and restaurants from 5 – 9pm.

Make sure to click on the link for the Downtown Frederick Partnership to see a list of participating locations!

If you don’t want to brave the crowds in downtown Frederick on Saturday the 3rd,  head over to the Fairgrounds for Frederick’s Oktoberfest (turn your speakers down!!).  Or you can do both, as the Oktoberfest will also be held on Sunday, October 4th.  Here is all the event information, which will be held rain or shine.

We went to the Oktoberfest at the fairgrounds last year and it was, well, a little sad. Anyone been to the Oktoberfest at Schifferstadt? Is it better than the one at the fairgrounds? Thanks.

I am working the Schifferstadt Oktoberfest this year for the first time. I am not sure what to expect this year.

I would also suggest that anyone wanting to do the Spirit Tour at Schifferstadt to call ahead. Due to a loss of the summer interns, the museum is operating in a reduced schedule. It is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon until four. It is best to call ahead Friday afternoon and book your Spirit Tour space.

Schifferstadt is staffed entirely by volunteers and all of us have other things we do so calling ahead is always recommended.

Wanted to add that Summers Farm celebrates the inaugural year of the Maryland Pumpkin Festival, Oct 10-11. While thousands of you have come to experience our annual offerings, such as the corn maze, hay slides, farm animals, hay rides, pumpkin patch, pig races, the jumping pillow and more; this year we have added a new festival weekend intended to celebrate all things pumpkin!

My family and I were there last weekend and it was awesome!! We all had a great time! My kids, ages 15, 7, and 3 all had something they really enjoyed! The corn maze was great for family bonding! The little man loved the slides and the baby pigs. They ALL loved the jumping pillow and apple cannon! The pony rides were also a hit. We all got to pick our own pumpkin in the patch (that you have to take the hayride to)! It was a great weekend activity! They always have something special each weekend so check out the website for the coupon and to see what cool activities they have planned. I guarantee your family will have a great time! They also have some great baked goods in their sweet shoppe that you can take home with you for a little taste of fall!!

Join Brunswick Railroad Museum staff and volunteers on October 30th and October 31st for A Night at the Brunswick Railroad Museum. This program will include Maryland legends, mysteries, and tales of the unexplained dating from the pre-Civil War period to the present. Some of these legends, such as that of a winged and horned beast known as the Snallygaster, may be familiar to visitors. Others, such as the tale of menacing maniac dressed in a rabbit costume, may be somewhat less familiar. Visitors, who are encouraged to bring flashlights, will be guided through the darkened halls of the Brunswick Railroad Museum and encounter storytellers wearing historical garb from three different time periods – and perhaps a scary surprise or two!

The approximately one-hour program will be offered at 7 pm and 9pm on Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st. The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for students with ID, and $5 for children 12 and under. Space for this program is limited, and reservations are strongly recommended. Call the Museum at (301) 834-7100 or email roleary@brrm.net for reservations. The Museum is located at 40 W. Potomac St. in downtown Brunswick, MD.
