Alexanders at Buckeystown

2009 September 5

Did you see the article in the FNP about a new restaurant in Buckeystown called Alexanders?  I hadn’t heard about this place before and it sounds pretty good.   The article describes it as southern style,  with barbecue and fried chicken and all the sides of a good comfort meal, like baked beans and collard greens and cornbread.  Yum!  They still don’t have a liquor license but you can bring your own in the meantime.

Culinary Institute of America trained chef Chris Smallwood chooses practically all the ingredients, from meats to fruits, from local producers. He smokes his barbecue on site with cherry and oak and makes the ice cream and cakes from scratch.

Appetizers like fried green tomatoes ($7.50) and pork boudin balls ($6.50), and then entrees like catfish ($12), a BBQ platter ($14), meatloaf ($12) and fried chicken with two sides ($13), brought back memories of bountiful banquets hosted by my southern grandmother.

I’m definitely going to be trying this place out!  Here’s some info on location.  Apparently they did some catering before the restaurant opened in June so that link is more about the catering.  Scroll down the page for the hours of operation.  It looks like as of now, they are only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. By the way, I love their slogan:

“Country Food with a Flare at Country Prices”

Is that the same place as the Buckeystown Inn?

No. Alexanders’ address is 3619 Buckeystown Pike and the Buckeystown Inn is 3521.

Thanks, I actually just did a search for the addresses. Good to have this new addition, as I live just a few miles away. Will have to try it soon!

This place sounds like it’s right up my alley!

My husband and I just went to Alexanders this evening, and it was fantastic. The barbecue was juicy, the vegetables were smoky but not greasy, and the homemade nutella ice cream was to die for! Since the FNP review they have experienced an increase in business, and they were quite busy tonight, but they still managed to make our meal flow perfectly, with no long waits between courses. Plus the reasonable prices and BYOB policy result in a refreshingly inexpensive check. Definitely check it out if you get a chance!

“Country Food with a Flare at Country Prices”…do you suppose that’s a play on the word “Flair”? FLARE for the flaring up of a BBQ fire? Or did they simply not know the difference between the two words?

I’ll assume it’s a play on words, which is why I thought it so catchy.

These guys are great. I know the owners personally and have helped them cater a few larger events in the past (they do weddings and holiday parties mostly)…the food is amazing and the portions huge!

I would love to check into this place! Who are the owners? Are they long time locals or if not, where are they from? And did you say
Holiday party ? OMG It’s almost time for those again! I hope they aren’t getting super booked already.

Dinner last night was very good! Tony and I dined with friends Vanessa and Eddie. I posted photos with a brief description of our dishes.

Dinner for four with one appetizer (the pork boudin balls), one cup of soup (Tony ordered a creamy corn chowder that was wonderful = I told the waitress the chef needs to put the chowder on the menu as a regular item – she had told us he normally does not do soups), four entrees, and two coffees came to $65. We brought our own beer and wine, which helped our wallet. Not sure when the restaurant will get their liquor license.

The restaurant was empty except for a few other couples. Our waitress thought maybe because it was the first day of the Frederick fair.

The food was very good and cooked well (meats were not dry but juicy and tender), portions large but we ate everything. Sides included scalloped potatoes, green beans, a vinegar based coleslaw, and other choices. We skipped the dessert. The menu is limited to about 4 appetizers, 6-7 entrees, two specials last night, and 3-4 choices in dessert.

    We’ll definitely be going back.
