Free-For-All: Weddings, Anniversaries, Engagements
We just spent the weekend with my family up in Ohio. We were celebrating my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. It was the first time the whole family has been together in twelve years. Since the last time were all together, two more grandchildren have been born and since my siblings all live far and wide, it was a pretty special weekend. I particularly enjoyed watching my kids hanging out with their cousins and grandparents and wishing we all lived closer together so that the cousins could hang out more.
So, I have lots of questions. How long have you been married? ( We celebrated our 24th anniversary last month). Are you engaged to be married? Do you find the wedding guide in Frederick Magazine to be useful in your planning? Do you have a special way in which you got engaged? Are you a confirmed bachelor/bachelorette who never wants to get married? Do you have a funny story about your wedding/engagement that you laugh about now but were horrified when it happened? (The closest I have to that is right after our wedding, my Dad was about to give a toast and a waiter dropped a whole tray of champagne glasses right when everyone got real quiet to listen to the toast. I wasn’t horrified, but I’m sure the waiter was!)
I hope all you Dads had a great Father’s Day!

Ashley and I have been married for ripe duration of almost 2 years now. I purposed to Ashley during the Baker Park 4th of July fireworks. But being married is way better then getting married!
Hey – me too for 24 yrs-come October 12. Although my LOVING husband says he’s been married for 8 wonderful yrs
Cute… Anyway, his plan to propose was literally CRUSHED… Went to Preakness,we were in the infield with a bunch of friends there…they seemed to be waiting for something. I actually knew something was up – just wasn’t sure – but remembered something he once said when we first started dating that he thought it’d be neat to propose to someone by ‘writing it in the sky’ – well, I never forgot that…and HE WAS DARN CLOSE… that day, he and his bro disappeared for quite some time… much to his dismay returned when a storm started to brew and winds had picked up, etc – he was v. sad – but didn’t tell me until I pulled it out of him on our return walk back to the car. A BANNER WAS TO FLY (attached to a plane)that said “J-You WIN, name the PLACE, I’ll SHOW-Marry Me-C” – his heart was broken – the banner ripped when the pilot tried to take it up in the winds… there’s my story!! a great story – but the final proposal…I’m not even sure – maybe in the parking lot?? :/

HE DID TAKE ME TO MAUI FOR OUR 20th !!
Julie and I have been “married” for 4-years now. (my previous was 10 years, this is her 1st) We met through an online dating service in PA.
It was a traditional “Vietnamese” wedding.
It was a blind date, no pictures exchanged, just several emails, that led to phone calls and then a first date. Guess the 1st date went well…we are still dating
My sweet husband, Michael, and I will be married 31 years on the 24th of June. I don’t remember many funny stories about our wedding day, but I do remember that we had an amazing day. I wish all the best to the couples just starting out!
My husband proposed to me over appetizers at Alekos restaurant in DC on my 23rd birthday on May 23, 1990, then after dinner, we went to the rooftop of the Hotel Washington. We had our wedding at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral and reception on the Spirit of Mt. Vernon cruise ship on June 8, 1991. That was the day chosen to welcome home the Desert Storm troops. I thought for sure we would have problems with traffic, due to the parade during the day and then the fireworks that evening. But everything turned out perfectly – the day was beautiful, we encountered no traffic, and we had a perfect view of all three fireworks displays from our boat on the Potomac!
My wife and I have been married over twenty years. How we managed to make it this far, I can’t say. I proposed to her near my barracks in the Republic of Panama, expecting her to say no. After all, it wasn’t a very romantic moment or location. We had just finished discussing when I was leaving, which was in about six months, that she wouldn’t be able to see me off at the airport. The Bangles “Eternal Flame” was playing on the radip and that has become our song.
I am a “confirmed bachelorette”, haha, though I am only 22. I love the idea of marriage as an institution, but I haven’t come to a point in my life where I am convinced that it could ever be enjoyable for me. Though I sometimes fantasize about getting married simply to be done with the dating scene, but I know it’s not right to settle for that reason alone.
My husband & I just celebrated our 6th anniversary on Sunday–and I use the term ‘celebrated’ loosely. With two small children, one of whom was sick, we hardly had a moment to ourselves. I think we’ve vowed to try harder to find a babysitter next year!!
Our wedding was very low-key. We both have opinionated moms & I’ll tell you what saved the day–I decided a few things that were very important to me and I just let the moms do the rest. It made everyone happy & I just got to enjoy my day with my wonderful new husband.
Bitsy, we did the exact same thing. I picked a few things I wanted my way and then let my mom take over. It was easier that way since we didn’t live in the same city in which we got married.
Thanks for your stories everyone. They were fun to read!
