Free-For-All: Yoga
2009 May 11
Over the weekend, I went away for a girls’ weekend with a few of my college girlfriends. One of my friends is a fitness instructor and she led us in a couple of yoga classes. I’ve never taken a yoga class before and really enjoyed it (although it could have been that my friend is a great instructor!). Does anyone take a yoga class that you can recommend here in Frederick?

I can’t wait for the responses. I love yoga too, but lately I’ve just been doing DVDs.
I know that Sol Yoga on W. Patrick street has $5 Friday classes, which is a steal considering a lot of yoga studios charge $15-20 per class. But I’ve never been.
I love Sol Yoga! They have something for everyone and the instructors are great. I go to the gentle flow classes which are a great way to release tension and stress. I always feel refreshed after class. If you want to step it up a notch, try the different levels of flow yoga.
I also wanted to add this link to the downtown Yoga studio, Ananda Shala
http://www.anandashala.com/classes/new-to-yoga
They have a free intro to yoga class twice a month and a special rate for newbies.
I’ve also never been there, but I’ve been wanting to go…
I love Sol Yoga! I would recommend starting with the Extra Gentle class before attempting the Gentle Flow if you’ve never done yoga before. It’s great.
The regular classes are usually $15 ($12 for students), but they do have the $5 Friday classes, which are usually a hit.
There are usually people of all shapes/sizes/levels in there, so it’s definitely not intimidating like I thought it would be.
Jan Faulkner at Sol Yoga is the best yoga teacher I’ve ever had. Sometimes, even when I have other instructors, I still hear her in my head… @_@.
I go to the William Talley Rec Center, where there are classes on Wednesday and Friday nights. I think it is $5 for non-members. They have mats provided there, and the teachers are great! I’ve done the cheaper/free classes at Ananda Shala, as well as Sol Yoga. I love the variety of classes/levels/teachers/settings, but there’s no way I could ever pay $15 a class, so my visits there are more sparse.
Caroline, who does the 5 p.m. Friday class for beginners at Talley, and also teaches a free class at Evangelical Lutheran Church on Wednesdays.
I like Rose Sincevich at the Center of the Four Winds on S. Carrol St. http://www.centerofthefourwindsstudio.com She offers free yoga Saturday mornings at 9:00 as a community service. The Monday noon class is very gentle and offered for Seva (donation from the heart). 301-663-0373
Deb Spotts offers yoga classes on a Love Offering basis at Unity Church Fridays at 10:30. 301-846-0868
Sol Yoga offers “Good Cause Yoga” every Sunday at 10:45 am. Donations benefit local charities. 877-SOL-YOGA

I am going to have to check them all out. I used to do yoga until injuries forced me to stop many things. But the ortho just cleared me finally so it is time to start up again. Slowly.
I love the yoga classes at the FMH Wellness Center at FSK Mall. I started taking yoga and pilates (by Lori — who is wonderful — she also sometimes teaches at Sol Yoga) and my chronic back pain pretty much disappeared. The classes are about typical price ($88 for a 8 week session, $15 drop-in), but because it is managed by FMH, my health insurance covers part of it, as if it were physical therapy.
i also love sol yoga! i have only been to 3 classes so far (gentle yoga), but i love it! it is sooo calming and relaxing. i’ve had 3 different teachers so far- i’ve done 3 different days- and all have been great. there is also a really wide range of capabilities for people in the class, so don’t worry if you’re a complete newbie like me!
If you live near Walkersville, the Jhoon Rhee Black Belt academy has Hatha Yoga classes Saturday mornings at 8am. I believe it’s $20 for a single class or $125 for 10 classes.
This is interesting, post more often!
