Los Potrillos and Henning’s closed too
2009 May 6
In case you missed it in the comments on this post, thanks to mdchmd for letting us know that, in addition to losing Lotus Chinese Cuisine restaurant this week, Los Potrillos has also closed up shop. Also new in the comments, Katie mentioned that Henning’s has closed as well. This is becoming a very sad trend indeed.

Gee, and I didn’t get the chance to try it out!
I heard from a friend last night that Henning’s, the German restaurant in Amber Meadows, has closed as well. Their website is gone, which isn’t a good sign (http://www.henningsrestaurant.org).
Katie , Oh no about Hennings. Our chicks night out really enjoyed there, I thought they were doing well. anyone have any confirmation one way or the other?
Oh wow! That’s really too bad about Hennings! I too really enjoyed it.
I’m always concerned when a business fails. But, for at least two of these restaurants, I think part of the problem was the quality of their product.
Put out great food at a reasonable price – and you will be in a better position to stay afloat.
what i found at the mexican place was the eviction notice on the window ( i was walking to the credit union there) and it stated that rent was $7,500/month. Now i know nothing about rent costs or operating a restaurant, but wow one would have to sell a lot of whatever to start making any $$. just thinking about start up costs (first and last months, additional deposit) makes my head spin!
my fear is that if this sort of costs is common we will soon by left with only chains that are backed by large pocketbooks of corporations.
Oh No!! Hennings too…. (SOB) That leaves the only place in town with decent beer is Firestones and even they are cutting back.
This is terrible. We went to Los Potrillos about once a month, typically on Friday’s. For pure taste and quality of food, we found it to be the best Mexican restaurant in Frederick. Now where in the heck will we go?
Their prices were very affordable, and the service was good. How on earth do the other, more expensive, but worse food, and terrible service Mexican restaurants on Route 40 stay in business?
BAFFLING.
overlooked,
my wife and I like Mexicali Cantina for their Fajitas and Fish Tacos. I never had Los Potrillos so I cant compare. We havent really like any other Mexican in Frederick. Or we love Rio Grande in Gaithersburg if you are up for a little drive.
I will second Mexicali Cantina. Good atmosphere there and good food.
My wife and I had great dates going to Hennings. The food was quality and it was a cozy atmosphere. We enjoyed sharing dinners and german beer. I am very sad over this, I am still grieving G. Hunters closing. Anyone have the dish on whether the chef may try to reopen somewhere else?
Disappointed to hear about Hennings, they really had a unique beer selection. They also seemed crowded whenever we went in. They really were not in a good location though, and maybe they weren’t getting the volume they needed on a regular basis.
I was at Hennings last week, found it vacated. When I began inquiring about their disappearing act, a nearby shop owner informed me that the owner had placed a sign in the window of his shop saying Guten Tag -”Good Day!”. The landlord arrive later in the day and removed the sign prior to my arrival.
This seems to at least be the second time this Danish owner of a German restaurant has taken French Leave from the area. He created a similar fanfare (not) from Der Wurzburg Haus on Muncaster Mill Rd near Rockville in 2005.
We’ve created a review of events about Hennings up at Der Wecker, the regional German-American forum.
If anyone hears of Chef Henning going somewhere else, please let us know.
I found Los Potrillos to be far and away the best pure mexican food around. Not TexMex, but real mexican. I always found the owner and his employees to be friendly and attentive when I was trying new dishes. Real shame they couldn’t stay open.
Very sad news… where else I am going to get a proper german beer. My husband and I will miss our date nights there.
El Ranchero–Opening soon in Frederick..very good and very affordable
I for one am more than ready for affordable, reasonably good Mexican….though forgive me for being skeptical about the “good” part. Where is this El Ranchero to be located?
Henning’s was doomed from day one. That TJ Drive location has never supported a successful restaurant, and never will. It’s great for lunch time, but dinner? Too far off the beaten path.
It’s all about location. Henning’s didn’t have it. Just ask the former owners of Emma’s, An Loi, and TJ’s.
Amen to that..Location,Location,Location
I am disappointed about Los Potrillos. The hubby and I have gone a few times. The food was good, but what I really liked was the chips and salsa! nothing like it in Frederick. It will be missed.
I hear Sardi’s Pollo A La Brasa is looking to open in Los Potrillos spot. I hope they do, I’ve been to the Beltsville Location and its just wonderful Peruvian Chicken.
Sardi’s Pollo is taking over the Don Chicken on Mc Cain. I was over at Home Depot and they have a big sign that says ‘coming soon’. I hope the food is as good as it looks on the website. http://www.sardischicken.com.
Yum, you are right George. That does look good! Thanks for the update.
Does anyone know when Los Potrillos closed? Was it in April?
susanna, not sure but I was there beg of May & reported that it was closed. it didn’t have a date of closing on the court notice on the door as i recall. HTH
It closed the day before Cinco D Mayo..go figure
Peruvian food is fast becoming the “it” cuisine! I have enjoyed Don Chicken – juicy, flavorful and salty. But what was really delicious was the spicy dipping sauce they serve with the chickens. Is it wrong to lick the little plastic cup to get the last morsel out??
Looking forward to what Sardi will bring -
