Gabriel’s to take certificates
Many of you out there may still have unused gift certificates from the now closed Mealey’s and John Hagan’s Tavern. Now another fine dining restaurant, Gabriel’s Inn in Ijamsville will honor at least a portion of those gift certificates. From the FNP business section:
The owner of a fine dining restaurant in Frederick County will honor gift certificates of two businesses that closed.
Sean DeLawder, owner of Gabriel’s Inn, said he will honor gift certificates from Hagan’s Tavern and Mealey’s, with some limitations.
The gift certificates will be honored for 50 percent of their value, up to $50. The offer is not valid for holidays or special events, DeLawder said.
“It is always a sad occasion when we lose an independent business in our area,” DeLawder said Monday.
“We are saddened to hear of the closing of Mealey’s Restaurant in New Market and Hagan’s Tavern,” he said in a notice sent to about 100 of his regular customers.
DeLawder said he is reaching out to customers and others who may have certificates from the two closed restaurants.
Gabriel’s Inn, at 4730 Ijamsville Road, offers fine French cuisine. The building has been a fine dining restaurant since 1968 and has been owned by the DeLawder family since 1988.
“We believe, and think our customers would agree, that we need more than chain stores and restaurants from which to choose,” DeLawder said. “It is part of our American heritage for a section of the marketplace to be comprised of small, independent businesses.”
He encouraged residents to support independent businesses of all types in the area, “And applaud your hard work, entrepreneurship and success in our community.”
A very classy move on the DeLawders and Gabriel’s Inn‘s part, if I may say so myself.

I have a $25 certificate to Mealey’s. I was holding onto it in case a local restaurant made such an offer, but I don’t know if it’s worth going to Gabriel’s Inn just to get $12.50 off the check. I’ve never been there. Any opinions?
I think that would be a pretty standard offer. I haven’t been to Gabriel’s in a couple years but we enjoyed it when we did go. It’s not a place to get a quick meal though. Count on being there a couple hours. I’ve heard they’ve done some work on the outside grounds and it’s not so treacherous a walk to get to the building from the parking lot anymore.
Maybe some other restaurants will do a similar offer now that Gabriel’s has started it.
What a great idea! Way to go Gabriel’s!
