Starvin Marvin in Luke’s old location

2009 January 31
by Liz

I just got my February edition of  Frederick Magazine in the mail today and read in The Dish section that a new pizza and sub restaurant is moving into the old Luke’s location off Crestwood Blvd. in the Crestwood Plaza.  It’s called Starvin Marvin and it’s their second location, the first being in Gaithersburg.  According to their website, they are expecting to open in February.  They don’t have the menu for Frederick up yet, but the Gaithersburg menu includes pizza, wings, subs, wraps, salads and gyros.

I’m looking forward to trying some new pizza in town!

I saw that the sign was being worked on and I wondered if something new was coming. Yay! that is like a hop skip and a jump form my work. Hope it’s good! I remember the starvin marvin in g-burg but it’s been so long I cant remember if it was good or not. Fingers crossed.

Good to hear there’s another option for a sub or pizza near where I work.

But Luke’s (may it R.I.P.) will be a tough act to follow!

I do believe that it is open now for delivery only. I may be wrong but thought I read that in the window…

Can’t wait. picked up a paper menu outside their window just the other day. When I say that they serve EVERYTHING, its somehow an understatement.

They just opened for business today. The pizza is even better than the Gaithersburg location. My wife liked the eat in dining area and we both liked the reasonable prices. Great food and now convenient to the greater Frederick area.

Went to Starvin Marvin for dinner tonight, on their first evening open in Frederick. It was pretty busy. We enjoyed the pizza. It was large.

Thanks for letting us know they are open and more importantly that the pizza is good! I’m excited to try it!

They had a person dressed up in two different types of costumes with their sign on them. Yesterday at lunch it was a hot dog and then coming home it was a hamburger. Good way to advertise since there is no sign yet!

We used to go to Starvin’ Marvin’s regularly when we lived in Germantown, but since we moved up to Frederick over four years ago, we’ve only gone a few times. They kept asking us why we didn’t come much anymore and we said they needed to open a place in Frederick, so we’re very happy they finally did! We got the Greek and Mess pizzas there last night and they were just as good as the ones from the G’burg location! And $5 for a second pizza is still a good deal! Yippee!

Can’t wait to get to Starvin Marvins! I was well acquainted with them years ago when I worked in Gaithersburg but lost touch once my job moved to Frederick.

Hope they can build up their clientele quickly and get a good foothold in these tough economic times. I’ve seriously missed Luke’s and would hate to see S-M’s end up going down the same path. I think the owners have shown some courage (or is it lots of confidence?) in giving this a go during the present economic meltdown.

How does their pizza compare to Luke’s?

    Hi Monica,

Unfortunately, it doesn’t. We ordered delivery just last night from Marvin’s for the first time. We had the wings and pizza. The wings were soft and spongy, and not warm, even though they were delivered 18 minutes after placing the order. They just seemed like processed grocery store wings.

The pizza had that bowling alley taste to it. WAY too much tomato paste and kind of soggy. I will try them again, but probably go for a sub next time. hope this helps.

Had to work late a couple nights ago, so I made my first visit to Starvin’s for sustenance.

I got a chicken filet sub w/cheese, L, T, O, and mushrms, plus onion rings. Everything was just fair. Subroll was soft, barely warm, with a “Wonderbread” quality. Onion rings–a rare, “forbidden food” treat for me–unfortunately didn’t warrant the backsliding….ho-hum batter, pretty greasy. They can be much better.

Lots of young children running around and yelling in the loud, echo-ey table area were deafening at times and probably didn’t help my assessment of the food. But of course you can’t expect much ambiance in a pizza & sub shop!
