In Love With Literacy Read-A-Thon
For the past 5 years, I have been a volunteer with the Literacy Council of Frederick County. The Council trains people to tutor adult residents in the county who need help with basic literacy or who speak English as a Second Language. I wanted to share information about a read-a-thon that we will be hosting on Valentine’s Day.
The Literacy Council of Frederick County in participation with Frederick County Public Libraries is excited to be hosting our first ever read-a-thon. Everyone from ages 1 month to 100 years is eligible to participate in this fun and meaningful event.
Participants commit to read by themselves or with a group for a specified amount of time during the event. In advance, they will request pledges from friends and families to sponsor their reading time. You can read as an individual or a team. The more you read the more money you will raise!
Every dollar raised will be used to buy books and other program materials for the students and tutors of the Council. The read-a-thon will take place in the Community Room at the C. Burr Artz Library on Saturday, February 14, 2009. Check-In begins at 10 AM and the reading time begins at 10:30 AM and ends at 4:00 PM.
We will be providing drinks and snacks to the participants throughout the day. We will also be drawing for door prizes donated to the event by local merchants.
We would love to have a big turnout! It is a great event to do as a family or as an individual. Please visit the read-a-thon’s web site to learn more or to register.

Hi – I work at the library – thanks for blogging about this event!
I tried registering for the event a couple times, but each time I hit submit on the form, it directs me to a weird website. I hope my registration went through. I did email the organization, so hopefully I’ll hear back.
Never mind – I just got my email confirmation, so it looks like everything works OK.
Thanks for letting us know about that glitch. It’s fixed now, and thanks for registering for the event!
