Freez King for sale

Oh boy Guy, you may not want to read this one…the property that Freez King is on is for sale.  And that may mean the end of a Frederick institution.  From the FNP:

The neighborhood landmark at 13th and East streets in Frederick is up for sale, more than 40 years after opening on March 11, 1966.

The owners are getting older and want to sell the land so that if someone wants to put up a different business there they can.

Freez King owners James and Mary Lou Thomas have owned and operated the business for 40 years. They are getting older and combined with health problems, “it’s no use fighting it,” James Thomas said.

The Thomases also want to sell a rental house nearby. There’s a lot of interest in the property, said Amy Castle, associate broker with Gloria and Roland Castle at Real Estate Teams and listing agent for the property.

“The Thomases are not actually interested in selling the business itself but would consider it,” Castle said. “They want to sell the land so if somebody wants to operate a different business, they could. But if someone wants to buy the business, they would sell the machinery separately, which is typical in a real estate sale.”

I can’t imagine not seeing Freez King there on East Street.  We used to ride our bikes there all the time when our kids were younger.

    Noooooooooo

I saw the sign the other day on my way to work and assumed it was for the house across the street. This must be the rental property they were thinking of.

A more central location would greatly help their business during non-peak hours. Look at Rita’s. Look at Jimmy Cone in Damascus. These places are getting increasingly endangered. And I think they have a better product than Beef & Burger & Buns.

Anyone hear what they are asking for it and whether you have to take both the house and Freeze king building?

I’m not sure that link worked. Here’s another. As of now, it’s in the center of the 3rd row down.

If the Freez King goes belly up, I hope someone preserves the sign and saves it for a museum that someday celebrates Old Frederick.

Well, the property was sold (apparently Mike Tauraso bought it) and they *sniff* took the big ice cream sign down.

I’m heart broken. One of my best childhood memories is walking to the Freeze King with my grandfather. That place had so much charm. Wish I could keep it going myself.

Well, I’ve heard another rumor regarding the old Freez King property. There was some speculation that Mike Tauraso was going to use it for smoking his meats for Black Hog. The new rumor I’ve heard is that he is going to tear down the old building and build a sandwich/sub shop and use the breads from Proof bakery.

    We shall see I guess…

There is an article in the FNP today about the old Freez King sign being refashioned for Beef ‘n Buns ‘n Paradise. If you click on the picture in the article, you can see the sign as it stands now:
