Emergency pet food bank at FCHS
One of the sad side effects of a bad economy is that many people feel they have to make the choice to take their family pets to the Humane Society. Whether it’s from a foreclosure or the lack of money to buy pet food or other reasons, many pets are now available for adoption at the Frederick County Humane Society. What many people may not know is that the FCHS has an emergency pet food bank for people who can not afford to feed their animals.
I found a link on the FCHS website to this story from over the summer on Fox 5 out of DC. It basically says that people are encouraged to take advantage of the pet food bank before resorting to dropping their pets off at the shelter. But like any human food bank, the FCHS needs donations to keep up supplies for the increased demand. From the FCHS website:
Thanks to the generosity of area businesses, scout troops, civic organizations and individuals, The Frederick County Humane Society offers a year-round Emergency Pet Food Bank, fully stocked with dog and cat food, and cat litter, to help people who cannot afford to feed their pets due to a financial hardship.
There are no eligibility requirements.
Food Bank clients are asked to come to the back door of our office and ring the bell for assistance with obtaining needed pet food.
Accepted donations include unopened bags and cans of food; cat litter; toys, towels and cages and crates of all sizes.
And if you are looking to add a pet to your family, consider adopting from the shelter.

I’ll point out that even “pocket pets” are available for adoption! Small Angels Rescue has guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, and chinchillas looking for forever homes. Please, please don’t buy from a pet store when there are so many wonderful animals out there in foster homes. check out the website if you’re interested:

Don’t forget the Animal Shelter also provides and needs pet food for their food bank.
