A Fabulous Evening in Downtown Frederick
Last night was such a beautiful night that we decided to head downtown for dinner. I’ve been suffering the effects of ragweed season so the wasabi at Hinode was exactly what I needed. It was a bit too warm to eat outside but the outdoor seating area is a lot larger than I thought it would be and, despite the algae in the creek, very inviting. We decided to sit inside at the bar instead. The wasabi did the trick and the weather was cooler when we left Hinode so we walked down to the Black Hog BBQ and Bar to pick up a take-out menu. (Click on the picture of the menu to take it to full screen. There’s an arrow at the bottom left to take you to the other side of the menu.)
If you can’t view by clicking the Menu, here’s another link black-hog-menu.
We then decided to walk up to VOLT to check out the bar. When we were lucky enough to get the tour of VOLT last May, it was hard to picture how the lounge area would be because it was under construction and full of boxes and building materials. The bar and lounge area is really lovely and cozy yet chic and modern. The bartenders were fun to talk to and we got a chance to talk with Aaron, the sommelier after he recognized us from that tour. He also let us know about how much he enjoyed the wines from Black Ankle Vineyards. We are hoping to get out there to taste them ourselves someday soon.
Finally, while walking back to our car, we saw an artist near the corner of Market and Patrick streets and stopped to talk to him for a second. He had the most amazing paintings of street scenes in Frederick. I couldn’t take my eyes off the one he was working on which used a lot of the color purple, one of my favorite colors. He is an extremely talented artist and I asked him if he had a business card. Luckily he did so I can tell you about him. His name is Stephen Hay. Check out his website!
It was a fun evening.

I could not see a link…might be my firewall here at work. A nice evening downtown Frederick is ALWAYS nice! Ain’t no place like home!
The link is to the right of the picture of the menu. It’s the “2jvpz” symbol.
It says you must have a google account to view it.
I posted it in PDF form on my blog here:

I would love to hear if anyone has eaten here and how good it is, etc.
My daughter and I ate at Black Hog for lunch last week. She had the brisket and loved it. I had pork sandwich. It was very tender by not very flavorful. Overall, it was very good and I will definitely be back.
I ate there tonight and had sausage and brisket which different have much of a smoking flavor. My son had the pork shoulder which was also missing the smoke. The sauce needs some work too. Of course growing up in Texas has spoiled me when it comes to BBQ.
I went to black hog on Monday…being from Texas, it was “so so” the sausage was nothing more than grilled kielbasa (sp?) or so it seemed. My husband had the dry ribs, they were mighty tasty…I also have to say the potatoe salad was very good. It has hard boiled eggs in it, which reminds me of my Mom’s southern cooking.
The first time I went to try out The Black Hog, they were out of pork! I tried again this weekend and had the “wet ribs” and my friend had the Carolina Pulled Pork. I loved my ribs (will definitely go back for them) but the carolina pork had WAY too much vinegar and the cole slaw was greatly dissapointing. The atmosphere is fun and great for kids but the service was a tad dissapointing as I was expecting lots of smiles. However, I will go back and give it another go – because I really want some of these new food venues to survive downtown!
