Frederick Starbucks to Stay Open

2008 July 19
by Guy

The list of the 600 Starbucks closing (PDF) down came out recently and none of the Frederick area Starbucks were on the list. This could be good or bad news depending on what your view Starbucks is.

This could also be a good indicator of the economy in Frederick. If people are still willing to pay four bucks for a coffee things may not be that bad.

There were some Starbucks closures in our area however:

Out of the 600 stores slated to close across the country, six in Maryland, one in D.C. and one in the Virginia area will shut down, announced the Seattle-based coffee giant.

The stores are: in D.C. at 2101 L St. NW; in Maryland at 3524 N. Crain Highway in Bowie, 10240 Baltimore Ave. in College Park, 18314 Contour Road in Gaithersburg, 18066 Mateny Road in Germantown, 12530 Fairwood Parkway in Glenn Daleand 11160 Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton; and in Virginia at 8006 Crescent Park Drive in Gainesville.

Thanks for the tips and links on this one TK and Josiah. Also, speaking of Starbucks, check out this blog of a Starbucks barista. Interesting reading.

For real….I mean I got gas at Costco today and it was like a NFL Football game had just let out. Cars backed up getting in and out of the parking lot. The place was just booming!! And I’m soo relieved that none of our Starbucks’ are closing. Love them or hate them…that is 600 stores where people are losing their jobs. That is a bummer.

One of my guilty pleasures is the drive-through Starbucks in Westview Promenade, so I have to say I’m relieved it’s not among those to be closed (though I didn’t really expect it to be). Hopefully the employees affected by the closings can be placed at other stores, as Starbucks mgmt. said they’d try to do.

Re the economy in Frederick, when I look at how busy the Westview Promenade has gotten, and–yes Mindy!–the crowds at Costco as well as the amount of traffic at almost any time of day, times still appear to be pretty good around here (at least outwardly).

I am glad people are not losing their jobs. That being said, swill is still swill. Best drip coffee in town is at Beans and Bagels. In a hurry, McD’s. Best expresso drinks is at Nola. My opinion of course.
