Local Brewery Makes Forbes Top Ten

2008 July 14
by Guy

Flying Dog Brewery made Forbes’ list of the World’s Top Brewery Tours.

This no-nonsense brewery is about 50 miles from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Tours are free, and unlike at other breweries, visitors aren’t restricted by Plexiglas or painted lines. The tour includes complimentary samples of beers like the In-Heat Wheat Hefeweizen and Tire Bite Golden Ale. Lucky visitors can indulge in free barbecue on days when the brewery staff feels like grilling.

I haven’t made it over for the tour yet, but this should help motivate me.

The Dog Tour is a GREAT way to try their beers and the Wild Gosse line as well. They are now having you buy one of their pint glasses for $5 before you sample…..but what a bargain and well worth the trip. The folks there are very friendly and informative. The tour is fun and “refreshing” :) Cheers!

I took the tour back in March, and must say it’s pretty cool to be pretty much right on top of everything from one end of production to the other. I’m guessing it’s becoming more and more popular, and it’s definitely worth the trip. And when they say sample, we aren’t talking little dixie cups…they take good care of you.

For the last year and a half I’ve been writing for the Mid-Atlantic Brewing News and can say, in addition to making a decent line of beers, they’re a great group of people as well.

In addition to Flying Dog’s beers, they continue to make the Wild Goose beers, and contract out space in the tanks (and for subsequent bottling) for the now available six packs of Brewer’s Alley Beers, and Clay Pipe beers.

This is really cool! Aren’t they somewhere off of English Muffin way?

I have done this tour twice and both times it was good. The tour is short, but they will answer any and all questions. Be sure to go early and stay late for generous samples! No brewery I know of does that. There are other breweries that have good tours, but skimp on the beer. This is best of both worlds. You should go.

I went to one of their events which was fun but have yet to take the tour. I will have to make it a point to do so some time.

I am hosting another BioBeers event at FD brewery on Wednesday, July 30th from 4:30-7:30 PM.

You just need to have some kind of connection with the local Biotechnology scene and we’ll let you in!

There has been a slight change, to conserve on plastic cups, they now have a $5 charge for a “sampling” pint glass, which you can take home with you.

More info about BioBeers here: http://fredcobio.wordpress.com/2008/07/10/biobeers-3-east-wed-july-30th/

Please RSVP to the web site if you plan on attending, becasue we are going to be grilling Brats and need a good head count.

    Thanks.

I recently moved out of the Virginia, D.C. area, and have never been to Flying Dog, but the last time I was up in Baltimore, I went to Clipper City’s tour, and those guys know how to do it up right as well. The Owner/founder Steve Hindy led the tour, and he is CRAZY passionate about beer. He just hung around the shop/tasting room afterward and answered everbody’s questions. The are not stingy with the beer samples either.

If I ever get back that way from the Left Coast, I want to make sure and stop by Flying Dog, and Clipper City.

We were just there last weekend, and it’s All That! No wonder it was so crowded, someone had to go and mention it here. ;-)
Bring extra cash if you go next weekend, they are collecting tips for one of their employees who is fighting cancer.
Samples are generous. Beer is fresh and yummy. Bring a DD!
