Sex in the City, but not Frederick City
I saw this article in the Baltimore Examiner this morning about a movie starring Renee Zellweger, Steven Weber and “Sex and the City’s” Chris Noth that will soon start shooting in Maryland. The movie will be using the Tyrconell mansion in Carroll County as a setting in the film. According to the Examiner article the mansion sits on a 24 acre estate surrounded by “lush gardens.”
I am trying to figure out where this Tyrconell mansion is, but sounds like an interesting movie, even if it is about George Hamilton
This brings up a couple of interesting questions. Aside from the Ausherman’s gaudy estate at the forefront of of Whittier, are there other noteworthy Mansions in Frederick County that deserve a look or perhaps a Sunday drive-by?
Who is the most famous person or celebrity you have spotted in Frederick? I don’t think I have seen any, but I have heard of sightings. If anyone spots the cast of this crew mentioned above in town, let us know!

If you keep going on Yellow Springs Road past the Whittier entrance at Christophers Crossing take lefts on any the next few intersections and you’ll find quite a few big estate homes back in there.
The first things that came to mind were ceresville, and Rose Hill Manor. A bit of searching also reminded me of Landon House, Strong Mansion and The Inn at Buckeystown
There’s one more that overlooked an estate that has since been turned into a development. I think it’s off of the golden mile, hidden in the middle of a gridwork of houses.
I met Bill Clinton at a mutual friend’s house in Mt. Airy. Does that count?
Where the heck is Tyrconell? I’ve lived in Carroll County for over 45 years and I’ve never heard of it.
Merry, that absolutely counts! We actually met him too, when he came to town way back in 1993 to give a speech on home interest rates. His speech was right in front of our house, which at the time was just a hole in the ground, waiting to be built.
Maybe, they misled us and it is in Baltimore County. See http://www.hsobc.org/nationalreg.html
I think they did. And it is spelled Tyrconnell with 2 N’s not Tyrconell.
Rev. Jesse Jackson stopped at McDonalds on Old Camp Road to use the bathroom and I saw Richard Simmons years ago at the Fredericktowne Mall.
The Examiner article specified Baltimore County as the location — even in its headline.
Tyrconnell is a 24,000 square foot Georgian-style house built in 1826 that sits on 26 acres, according to the Examiner article.
I know Damascus isn’t quite Frederick County but I was quite surprised 2 weeks ago when I realized actor Lee Ermey was having lunch at the table next to me in Tom & Ray’s Restaurant. Heard he was in town filming something for Discovery Channel. (Not high name recognition, but you’d almost surely recall seeing him on TV and in movies over the years as a gruff military type. I’m told he’s appeared in several notable war movies; currently hosts “Mail Call” on cable.)
Here’s the google map to the correct location:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=+120+Woodbrook+Lane+++%09+Woodbrook,+MD&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=57.249013,76.992187&ie=UTF8&ll=39.379914,-76.637048&spn=0.221321,0.300751&t=h&z=12
It’s inside 695, South West of Towson. Definitely in Baltimore County.
I guess the guys at the Examiner caught their mistake, because I had merely cut & pasted their article. They even e-mailed to chastise Guy for not having their permission to reprint, copy write violations and yada, yada, yada, so we edited the post and linked to to story instead.
But I did this post yesterday. They both mis-spelled the name of the manse and were in the wrong county (as the Headline reads). We’re not going to be recommending anyone reads the Examiner again anytime soon…
Agreed, the article has since been corrected.
Jim::: The word “manse” is NOT synonymous with the word “mansion”. A “manse” is a parsonage or vicarage…or some other house belonging to a minister of a church. And nice people don’t say “mansion” anyway…the proper term is HOUSE!
