Since we’re on a theme, I found it timely that I received an email asking to promote an event in the area in May: The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. We have all lost loved ones to the terrible, crippling class of diseases collectively called Cancer.
I received this note from an old acquaintance, Mary, asking to get the word out:
A friend, who lost the fight at the age of 31, inspired me to get involved with Relay For Life. It changed my life, it was her gift to me.
Relay For Life is the ACS’s signature event. Over $400 million was raised in 2007 through Relays around the country. Donations like yours support so many programs; Road to Recovery (providing transportation to treatment), Man-to-Man (support for prostate cancer patients), Look Good / Feel Good (providing wigs and other help for women who have lost their hair during treatment) and a wide range of other programs.
The Frederick Relay For Life will be held May 16th & 17th at the Frederick Fairgrounds. It’s an overnight event where hundreds of patients, survivors and loved ones come together to celebrate survivors and remember those we’ve lost.
Please visit my web page and learn more about Relay. There are so many ways you can be involved; start a team, join a team, light a candle that will burn all night or make a donation for the Dove Release in honor or in memory of a loved one. If you can’t stay overnight, come Friday for the opening ceremonies, support the onsite fundraisers, make a bid in the silent auction.
If you aren’t from the Frederick area, check www.cancer.org to find a Relay in your town. Or call 1-800-ACS-2345; they’ll help you find a Relay, or answer any question you may have. They are there for you 24/7.
If you have family or friends that may be interested, please don’t hesitate to forward my email. It’s the best way to get the word out to the community.
Thanks for reading my message and for your help turning HOPE into a CURE!
Mary
