Frederick stories

April 10, 2008 · 2 Comments

There is an old rap song called Ya Mama by The Pharcyde and one of the lines goes Ya mama’s glasses are so thick she look into a map and see people wavin’ at her. I know it’s juvenile, but it still makes me laugh. It also makes me think … what if you could see the people that make up a location on a map? Or at least the stories that make a place special.

It’s that idea that lead me to set up the Frederick Stories Map on Google Maps. It’s an open map that will let you share your stories about Frederick. You can put a little pin in the map for a certain location, draw some lines to mark a physical route, or draw a shape on the map to mark an are or region.

What you share on the map is up to you. Maybe you pinpoint the location of your first kiss, where you used to live, where you work, where you got married, where your child was born, the location of that creepy house you think is haunted, where you want to live, where you went to school, where you got mugged, where you met your significant other. You can draw a route of your favorite walk or bike ride, your route to work, your favorite drive. Good, bad, funny, sad, it’s up to you on what you want to share.

Once you draw a map or pinpoint a location you can add text, links, pictures, pretty much anything you want. I think you may have to have a Google account to mess with the map, but they are free and easy to set-up.

So I hope you have a minute to share something; to make your mark on the Frederick map per say. And maybe in a couple of months when you look at the map and see all these dots and lines you can click around and learn something about your neighbors and the place you live in.

Guy, I think that’s a really cool idea!

I don’t live in Frederick (though I work there and sure enjoy the community), and my creepy house stories, first-kiss and “parking” adventures, and other notable events took place elsewhere, for the most part (though still within the great state of MD). So, dagnabit, what I personally can contribute is limited.

But I look forward to what you born-and-bred native Fredericktonians(?) as well as other residents have to share with the rest of us!
