Calling all stargazers

2008 March 8

Check out this cool little tidbit from the Gazette

The stars, planets and other celestial bodies can be seen up close from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday evenings through April 30 through the Hood College Williams Observatory telescopes, 401 Rosemont Ave., Frederick.

Community members will be able to use the stationary and portable telescopes in Hood’s observatory to view the night sky, and Ken Howard, lecturer in astronomy at Hood, will be available to answer questions.

Who knew. Makes me glad to have Hood in Frederick.

Is the observatory right on campus?? Not sure how you would find it?

It is right on campus. It’s a pretty small building, but it’s shaped like an observatory so easy to spot. The easiest way to get to it would be go through the back entrance of Hood (off of Magnolia, through the gate) and go left. If you keep going straight, you’ll find it on your right.

If you go through the front entrance, off of Rosemont, you’d go to the right after entering, then back to the Chapel lot, then keep going back and it would be on your left.

As a Hood student, I’m glad they have this. My Alma Mater at Frostburg had a Planetarium, and Hood has an observatory. Both colleges offer weekly viewing for the community at no cost.

Things like this are items that can make a community overlook some of the stupidity that a few college kids can bring to an area, and really focus on the benefits of actually having the college locally. I haven’t been to the observatory on campus yet, but having experienced the Frostburg planetarium a few times, its pretty neat to see the faces of kids who’re looking in amazement at this educational opportunity

    /sorry, was feeling longwinded today.

Thanks for posting this information! It’s great to have opportunities like this in our county.
