Friday Free-for-All: Garden Centers

March 7, 2008 · 6 Comments

I don’t know about you, but once March hits and I start seeing my spring bulbs coming up, and those gardening catalogs start arriving,  I get the gardening itch.  Oh I know it’s way too soon to start planting, but a little planning never hurt!  Where do you go for your gardening plants and supplies?

We have plenty of garden centers to choose from here in Frederick County.  The Dutch Plant Farm was always a favorite of mine but the last few years, I’ve bought most of my plants for my vegetable garden at the Southern States Co-op on W. South Street.  In the southern part of the county, there’s Potomac Garden Center in Urbana.  I haven’t been there yet, but I plan on it.  In the Southwestern part of the county, there’s Stadler Nursery on Mt. Zion Road.  Of course, there’s always Lowe’s and Home Depot too.  I know there are many more, but I’d like to know what your favorites are!

I posted a “WANTED” for plants on the Frederick Freecycle community last fall and was inundated with local gardeners’ offers to fill garden beds around my condo. I received hundreds of dollars worth of plants from local growers who either wanted to thin their plots out or were ready for something new and gave me their whole plants (for FREE!).

Same thing goes for the 25 indoor plants & trees I have at my acupuncture clinic: all donated through the generosity of Freecycle Friends. I love knowing the personal stories behind my plants, and feeling this community’s connections growing right inside my clinic…

Very cool Jessica! Thanks for sharing a great story about this wonderful community.

I had a similar experience when I moved in to our current house and was disappointed that there were no real flowers planted here. I mentioned it to some clients and next thing I knew, I had garbage bags full of plants from people thinning their gardens. It would have cost me a fortune to buy them all.

It’s never too early to start planning! I’ve been dreaming about my garden all winter. I cannot wait to break the soil, get it all mixed up and ready for those seedlings! SO EXCITED!

Jessica is right! I got some great plants on Freecycle, too. It is also nice to share with neighbors. What a great way to get to know people. :-)

Wow - that is great news about Freecycle. Becoming a recent member of Point of Rocks Garden Club - seems gardeners have similar goals in enjoying the outdoor life and want to share it with anyone that has the same interests.

Potomac Farms Nursery is a great place for most everything - Ballenger Crk & Manor Wds. Friendly Staff. Another Fav is Thanksgiving Farms on Rt. 85 so. of Buckeystown. They have very wide and unique variety of plants and a great gift shop - they can be a little pricey, at least in the past.

Oh, you must go to Surreybrooke on Rt 40 in Middletown. It inspires me every year. My kids love to go to the children’s garden there–it’s a magical place!
