A new wine store in Frederick
This little tidbit comes from a reader tip:
Driving out of Frederick last week on 7th Street, I was surprised to see that a new wine shop has opened. It is right on the corner of 7th and Tollhouse, directly across the street from the hospital. The name of the store is The Frederick Winehouse. You can check out their website at www.frederickwinehouse.com. It has only been open for about a week now. In fact I could still smell the fresh paint.
I chatted with the owner Gary for a while and tasted two different wines. He even opened a bottle just for me to try, even though I was the only person in the store and it was near closing time. He plans to have frequent tastings and eventually make part of the store into a cheese shop. At the moment, he is just carrying wine and by the name and the facility, I don’t expect he will carry any other spirits.
Thanks for the tip Chris.

Aw, I wish I had seen this earlier. I was just up on 7th Street, at Ye Olde Sprirts, looking for a specific wine with no luck. I’m definitely checking this place out!
Yay! I’ve recently found your blog and find it to be a wealth of valuable information…especially when it comes to food and wine!
about saying he opened product. Against Frederick Country Liquor Board rules. You’re not supposed to unless he has a “wine tasting license’ and has designated tastings during say hours of operations. I know the bar that got fined and shut down for 10 days because they were advertising buy one get one free drinks. I am glad they are very strict in terms of governing the laws but just appalled by some laws that they do have, such as not being able to open on a Sunday until 12:00PM.
I noticed the new wine shop last week too but haven’t been inside. Maybe I’ll check it out after work today.
@Cara, welcome, glad you found us!
We noticed the wine shop, too. Thought it was an interesting business decision to share a building with the Renal Unit and across from the hospital. Is the wine shop building clientele for the Renal unit: drink lots of wine, and eventually you can visit the renal unit for dialysis? Or perhaps the hospital is creating clientele for the wine shop: visit your relative in the ICU and bring a bottle of wine along? Vice versa??
Anyway, my fiance picked-up a bottle of wine from them for our Valentine’s night together. They recommended an American Riesling, but he selected a German. The German that they carried was very good. Maybe next time we’ll go with their suggestion. Looking forward to their wine tastings!
Here’s their website: http://www.frederickwinehouse.com/
Ciao, Jessica
I wonder if it carries Greek wine – don’t see it mentioned on the web site. Since it’s also right near the Greek Orthodox church (which we belong to), it might be able to pick up some additional customers if it does (I would go there just to get mavrodaphne; retsina, though – bleh!).
I just stopped by and it was really nice. I was looking for a Ripasso, and although they didn’t have the one I was looking for, they were able to recommend (with more knowledge than I even needed) a comparable choice. I’ll be drinking it tonight – yummy!
Well, they have tough competition as Ye Olde Spirits Shoppe has one of the best wine selections in Western Maryland. however, I am quite intrigued as wine is right on!!!
One of the things that I like about the new Wine shop is that they will track your purchases if you want them to. That way, when you go in and ask what the wine was that you bought a month ago that you liked….they can look it up and tell you!
Plus..they have a wide variety of prices – you can get pretty tasty drinkable whites in the 10 buck range. They carry all kinds of different vineyards – not your typical Mondavi, Kendall-Jackson…but some more interesting and smaller labels that are equally enticing.
Leslie, who works during the day – is especially helpful when trying to select moderately priced wines.
Everyone that works there has been great and friendly.
Their grand opening is tomorrow – hope you all get to check it out!
I stopped by today to pick up some wine for a “Girls Night out” party.
Gary was really helpful and assisted me in picking out a wine. They have quite a selection of wines and I’m excited to try something new. He was also very nice about not picking out a pricey wine since he knew it was for a group of ladies that could vary in tastes.
The store is set up really nice and I even had a small stroller (I know it’s horrible taking my kid into the store…but I had no choice!!) and it was easy to navigate. The wines are nicely organized and even have a Maryland wine section.
They do “after hours” tastings too that you can schedule with a group. So I will suggest it to my other “mom” friends!
I give this place two thumbs up and found it a refreshing change!!
Went in there for the first time a few weeks ago. Great place.Very helpful staff. Bought a couple of inexpensive wines they recommended as wasn’t disappointed.
