The Bodega Deli, Beer and Grocery

by Liz

We now know what has taken over the former Philly Cheesesteak Factory and before that, The Brown Pelican at the corner of North Market and East Church Streets.  From the FNP:

Richard Belles is continuing his family’s tradition of food businesses with a new shop downtown.

Richard took over the spot at the corner of North Market and East Church streets that his brother, Rollie, had for the business.

The Bodega Deli, Beer and Grocery replaces the Philly Cheesesteak Factory that his brother moved to Urbana Pike.

The new business offers pizza, subs, sandwiches, wings and, starting next month, a salad bar.

The shop also has bread, milk and other convenience items. Beer is also available for on- or off-site sale.

“This summer I plan to have fresh produce, vegetables and fruit,” Richard said.

If the owner’s name sounds familiar, his family also owns Belles’ Sports Bar and Grill on E. Patrick Street.

The Bodega is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday. For information call 301-695-8425.

Glad you brought this up, Liz.

I’d like to ask if anyone can recommend Belles’ Sports Bar and Grill. I’ve heard a couple of people claim Belles’ has “the best barbeque in town.” I find that hard to believe.

To my eyes, Belles’ has always been a very smoky, not-even-mediocre pool hall that serves burgers and dogs. Some call it a “sports bar,” but it’s unlike any sports bar I know of. In fact, with the recent outlawing of smoking in restaurants, maybe it’s not even smoky anymore. These days, maybe it’s just a not-even-mediocre bar.

    Am I wrong?

I actually went to Belles’ last Saturday and they had a very good cajun fish and chips special. I was really impressed with it. I would suggest trying it out, especially now that it’s not smoky at all.

Isn’t that near Vignola’s Market? (now Juliet’s Market) Also, there’s a new store at 322 N. Market St. called Fletcher’s General Store that I haven’t been to yet. (see story at http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/archives/display_detail.htm?StoryID=76978 ) and Euromarket at 244 E. Church St. (see story at http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/archives/display_detail.htm?StoryID=72498 ). It’s great to see more diversity of businesses downtown, including these markets, esp. since none of them are chains. Good luck to all these new business owners.

Yeah, it’s right on the corner of Market and E. Patrick, down the stairs.

All the best to Richard, Downtown has been without a market for quite sometime.

This place is a huge disappointment.
The pulled pork especially! Bad flavor and texture. Not the best quality at all.
Tried again and got a couple of different subs for our family and they were so-so.
