Last Wednesday we finally had the chance to go to Quynn’s Attic, located where Cafe Kyoko used to be on the second floor at 10 E. Patrick Street. We were glad to see that there were several tables available as we were limited in time. We were picking up our daughter at the train station, so the location was perfect. The room is very nice and we were lucky to get a table overlooking the street.
We ordered drinks and looked over the menu. I realized I wasn’t all that hungry, so I decided to get the Grilled Chicken entree salad. Jim decided on the Deconstructed Tuna Nicoise salad. We also decided to split the sea scallops appetizer. The scallops appetizer was very delicious, sort of a little scallops pot pie. My salad was good and the lemon pepper vinaigrette was light and delicious. Jim liked his tuna, but didn’t realize it was a salad so he was still a bit hungry after his meal. The dinner comes with a small basket of bread and the servers offer little balls of butter to go with the bread. My favorite bread had oregano baked into it and tasted a bit like pizza. I wish I could remember what the other bread was.
That night, there was a young woman who was obviously in training as a waitress and she brought over Jim’s beer bottle on a tray with a glass. When she picked up the glass off the tray, the beer bottle teetered back and forth and then spilled off the tray onto my seat. The owner came over and offered us another table, but we were OK and just needed a couple new napkins. The poor girl obviously felt terribly embarrassed and we tried to reassure her that it was no big deal.
After the meal, the owner (at least I think he was the owner, Michael King) came over and offered us dessert on the house, which was a very nice gesture but totally unnecessary. Since Jim was still a bit hungry, we decided to look over the dessert menu anyway (I wish they had that menu online, because there were several that sounded delicious!) and agreed that the pastry with cream and fresh berries sounded awesome. I ordered a cup of coffee to go with the dessert. We were shocked when he brought out two desserts. We had assumed that he was bringing out one for us to share. I didn’t think I had room for the whole thing, but it was so delicious I ate it all!
We’ll definitely go back since there’s lots of things on the menu I’d love to try. The Saturday brunch sounds amazing too.

How were the prices there? The chicken looks like it could be good, so I may have to wander a few blocks this weekend.

Honestly, I didn’t pay much attention to the entree prices, but I think they were in the $15-$25 or $30 range.

Zagat is currently doing their periodic dining survey and is expanding Frederick coverage, and this place is on the list. They send a free $14 book to people who participate.

Had a terrible dinner there Thursday night. I ordered the organic chicken and for some reason - perhaps a mechanical problem - it came out raw in the middle. I sent it back and asked for a new one. The second one came back more cooked on the outside, but still raw in the middle. I finally ordered the seared tuna.

JJP,
I might have to give the Chicken a try. I prefer my chicken pink in the middle, which is why I never order it out since it’s always over cooked.

Give it a try, Jim. I will warn you that it wasn’t pink. It was bloody. Judging by their reaction, I don’t think they served it that way on purpose.

I’ve had nothing but wonderful food there! I’ve already been there 4 times and can’t wait to go back!

We ate there on Monday night and I also ordered the chicken dish. The entire meal came out tepid and the chicken wasn’t quite frozen in the middle but it was definitely cool. It may still be early days yet and we will give it another go in a month or so. The ambiance was really wonderful and loved the old time jazz playing in the background.

Lizfrog, bless you for being so gracious when the young woman spilled the drink. So many people would not have reacted so generously, and you probably keep an unfortunate incident that she already felt terrible about from becoming a lifelong scar! I wish more people could be as forgiving.

I have had the chicken several times and not experienced this issue. By the way, JJP, uncooked / undercooked chicken can not possibly be “bloody” as you stated. Anyone who has ever cooked chicken can tell you this. Your review does not ring true. Are you sure you aren’t affiliated with a competing restaurant?

Nick,
I cook bone-in chicken in my home pretty regularly too. I also eat chiken out as well. I can tell you the chicken was undercooked both times. When it came out the first time, the breast meat was flacid and there was blood in the juices. When I cut into the dark meat, blood ran from the veins in the thigh. The second time, the breast was better cooked, but once again blood ran from the veins in the thigh.
The first time I reported it, the waiter was disgusted and ran to kitchen with my plate. The second time I doubted myself and pointedly asked him: “Am I crazy? Does this look cooked to you?” His response: “I wouldn’t eat it.” I showed it to my wife and she got nauseous.
So, if you’ve had a great experience at this or any restaurant, please share it with us. If you’ve had the chicken several times since I did, perhaps they fixed the problem in the kitchen.

I may be wrong..but can’t you die from pink chicken??
Rondell // April 2, 2008 at 10:52 am
You probably wouldn’t die from pink chicken unless you were really young or really old. otherwise just probably spend some time on the toilet with a mild to severe burning sensation from a sensitive area

Been wanting to try this place, so I met up with friends last friday (May 16th). Had their delicious “Pignoli and Dijon Crusted Salmon
Lobster scented tomato risotto, roasted garlic, asparagus, smoked paprika” I didn’t really tae the lobster flavor, but it was very good. My friends had the salmon/salad and the quesadilla, which she raved about. Drinks were delicious: I had their Quynn’s special, which almost had a mai tai flavor. Prices were reasonable and I enjoyed the atmosphere. Bar stools were filled when we arrived.

The wife took me to Quynn’s Attic for dinner, all in all not bad at all, we’ll be back.
We both had the Steamed Mussels, fresh and clean, a lot of places don’t remove the beard. They also did me an appetizer sized Confit of Duck salad, outstanding. The wife had the Pork Tenderloin, the pork was a perfect medium, sausage stuffing light and fluffy but packed with vegetables and sausage. I had the seared tuna loin, the soba and the vegetable, lightly seasoned and flavorful, the tuna for me was a little over cooked (prefer my tuna raw), but not enough to send it back. She had bread pudding for dessert, served warm and even better, not to sweet. I had the fruit tart, again not to sweet and the crust was perfectly cooked. Service was spot on, as were the drinks.
