Power company to pay for bulbs
Allegheny Power agreed today to pay for the energy-efficient light bulbs it sent to its 220,000 Maryland customers and refund the money it’s already charged for delivering them.
Representatives of the utility appeared before the Maryland Public Service Commission after state lawmakers were inundated with calls from people who said they got the bulbs and only learned later they were being charged for them.
Allegheny Power attorney Jeffrey P. Trout says the company “screwed up the implementation” of the program, which was intended to help people use less electricity and save money. He says the company’s shareholders “will eat 100 percent” of the cost.
At least they got something right - the company “screwed up the implementation” of the program

That is great news. Thank goodness they admitted guilt and are doing the right thing by we customers.
And thank you for reporting a follow-up to the story for us.
Thank you for paying for the bulbs that you sent to me with out my consent…(sounds kinda funny huh?)…And I hope you learned your lesson!!
Although we all should have known–and my mother always told me…”Nothing is free”
Although I would be sure and look at your bill very carefully for the next year to see if they try to “slip in” charges.
My husband and I received those light bulbs too. He swore they couldn’t be for free but neither he nor I had purchased them. I thought they were a promo. I guess we didn’t look at our power bill closely enough. If they’re willing to cheat people on things like promotional light bulbs (that no one asked for) what else are they willing to cheat us on?
Yeah I know…this is why I will be looking at my bill VERY VERY close for the next few months..If I see ANYTHING out of the ordinary…I am calling them…(and hope I get to talk to a real person, not some stupid computer!)….
