Let’s Dance

January 11, 2008 · 5 Comments

The latest exercise craze has made it’s way from the West Coast to Urbana Dance Studio: “exotic dance”. Specifically stripper pole dancing.

Exotic dancing – specifically pole dancing – for fitness is a new way for women to feel fit, sexy and empowered, according to Tammy Frazier, owner of A Pole New You. Frazier founded the pole-dancing instruction company last year in Frederick after becoming intrigued by the idea of teaching exotic dance techniques to ‘‘everyday women.”

‘‘It’s different, needless to say. … It’s a different way to enjoy fitness activities and time to create memories with friends. That, all in all, is what the draw is,” she said.

Potential customers shouldn’t feel put off by the curriculum, she said. The only stripping one would be likely to see during class would be if someone gets too hot while exercising and needs to doff her sweatshirt.

As class sizes declined after a year in Frederick, Frazier se (sic) decided to look for a new location. She chose Urbana, and classes began at the studio Saturday.

If stripper dancing is not your thing, you can try belly dancing classes at 24/7 Dance Studio on Prospect Blvd. There are different levels of classes from beginner to “performance prep” as well as private lessons.

If you are a fan of the show Dancing with the Stars, you may have considered taking ballroom dance lessons. Never fear…ballroom dance is here at Ballroom Dance in Frederick, located on Grove Road.

Have you heard of any other themed exercise classes? Or have you tried any of these types of classes and would like to share your experience with them? If so, please leave a comment.

Though the article only covered pole dancing…clearly described as fitness pole dancing, not “stripper” pole dancing, A Pole New You offers a range of empowering classes that help women get fit and increase self-confidence. In addition to fitness pole dancing classes where students use their own body weight as resistance to gain upper and core body strength, PNY offers, chair dancing classes, and will soon be offering belly dancing and Zumba. The programs at A Pole New You do not teach “stripping”, but focus on various movement techniques that help adult women get fit, and have fun and feel good about themselves in the process…if these pros are not your thing, stick to the same old (if you can).

Umm, but is there a pole near you in or near Frederick? I currently drive all the way to Baltimore to take pole lessons. It is a great way to build upper body strength, that running on a tread mill or kick boxing does not give me. Obviously you are either the owner or a trainer at this A Pole For You, I could not find it on the internet… at least not near Frederick. And I can not wait to give Urbana a try!

Interesting…when you google A Pole New You, it comes right up…even if you search for the wrong name as you typed in your last sentence (A Pole For You, Frederick, MD), it still comes up.

A Pole New You is located right here in Frederick. Visit the website. It sounds fun. There really is a lot of fun and interesting things to do in Frederick (fitness, recreation, enjoyment). Sometimes you just have to look a little further.

There’s a great class offered at the Y (and a couple of other places I’m told) - it’s called Zumba - and it’s Salsa Aerobics. It’s an hour of hip shaking, rump moving action set to upbeat fun salsa music.

It’s so much fun that it doesn’t even feel like work… but, by the end of the class we have gotten a great workout and have learned some moves that , if we were so daring, could be used on the dance floor.

Of course, I wish they would take down those dreaded wall-to-wall mirrors which only serve to reflect just how much NOT like the instructor my moves are.
