A recent visit from Wife Swap is just another incident in Frederick’s long list of pop-culture appearances.
- Some of the Deadliest Catch crew visited Frederick.
- A Frederick Teen played a geek on another reality TV show.
- The Frederick area’s rich Civil War history played a part in a potential show.
- A young Frederick man took on an infamous film director in the boxing ring.
- This Frederick kid got some help from Ellen on his Halloween costume.
- And a local couple learned what not to wear a couple of years ago.
What did I miss? I’m sure there are other Frederick pop-culture facts out there.

There was a guy from Frederick who was on the Letterman Show often in the ’80s. I think his name was Harvey Sheetz, and there was a place on East Street across from 8th which displayed many of his inventions….

A local teen won a youtube video contest sponsored by Atlantic Records and platinum-selling rock band Panic at the Disco. I couldn’t pull it from the Frederick Post archives, but Google still has the story cached here:

Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation grew up in Walkersville and,–don’t forget Claire McCardell. Her innovations in “casual wear” can still be seen in today’s fashion.

Hunter Heffner from Brunswick was on Garage Takeover on Discovery Channel. It was a makeover show mostly for pack rat people with crammed garages. They made really great new and creative spaces and I really miss the show.

Frederick received passing mention in a couple true crime shows I’ve worked on:

Does anyone know anything more about the inventions by Harvey Sheetz? He went to high school with my dad and we were curious

I talked with Harvey Sheetz a number of times. He started making sculptures to make money, but his real concern was the ghost hunting. He took it very seriously. He also happened to be a paranoid schizophrenic. We were talking once and a jogger went by, he made a comment suggesting that the jogger was an agent watching him. Just then, three huge helicopters flew by on the way to Camp David (a common occurance in the area). He said these too were trying to prevent him from revealing the power of his ghost detectors to the public. Nice guy though.
