Frederick Food Bank Needs Donations

From the Gazette:

(Sarah) McAleavy, the food bank’s manager, said that the annual Boy Scout food drive usually stocks the shelves until May, but this year’s donations decreased by 25 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of Frederick families that the food bank serves a month has increased from nearly 370 last year to more than 400 this year.

McAleavy estimated that the donations from the Boy Scouts ‘‘Scouting for Food” drive might last until January.

The Frederick food bank is one of eight food banks under the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs. The Community Action Agency operates the Frederick food bank.

‘‘[All the food banks] need financial contributions and food,” said the Rev. Brian Scott, executive director of the Religious Coalition. ‘‘This is really a basic survival issue.”

It’s a tough time of year for many people in our county but if you would like to donate to the local food bank, here’s a list of locations and hours where donations are accepted. There are no addresses on that list, but there is a phone number over on the left sidebar.

In preparing food donations, Scott and McAleavy said it should contain food that is nutritious and could provide for a well-balanced meal. Pasta sauce, side dishes, fruit, veggies, rice and pasta are in particular need.

The food banks are still taking donations and are willing to partner with schools, community groups and businesses to organize food drives.

Thanks for posting this Liz. I think I’ll go by Costco soon and purchase one of those big ‘ol multi pack’s of Pasta or something and drop it off.

Great idea Guy. Costco is a good place to get what they need as described in the article.

Hi! I go to Camp Louise and I am starting a food drive to collect all the extra food at the end of each session. I was wondering, since camp is right near Fredrick, it would be nice to donate it there. Is there any way that if we were to donate it to you, you would be able to pick it up?
It would be a lot of food, so it would be difficult for us to transport it

Email me if you are interested!

I am a volunteer at the food bank and we still need donations. The last few weeks we have run out of things like canned fruit and peanut butter.
