An Ode to Baker Park
I wanted to share this review of Baker Park from a hometown Frederick guy who now lives in San Fran.
It is setup like an old town. Before cars, malls, highways, Olive Garden, track housing, 1 hour commutes, shock jocks, gated communities and the idea of buying a big ass cookie cutter house that you don’t have time to live in and you have to pay people to clean and mow your lawn and watch your kids…..
And so now Frederick is surrounded by all the crap I just listed. But there still exists Market street- a quaint commercial artery and street after street of nice row houses. And within walking distance, a perfect little urban park for everyone to enjoy. A meeting place for the citizens of Frederick and a place to celebrate and relax.
There are weeping willow trees, a quiet creek, a clock tower, playgrounds, a public pool, softball fields, band shell etc etc.
So drive to Frederick, park your god-forsaken car, turn off your cell phone, go for a walk around Baker Park and remind yourself of how simple life can still be.
So true, if it wasn’t rainy, cold, and dark right now I would pop on over to the park.

I think it was 1993 when I first saw Baker Park; I had come to do a volksmarch through the city. I remember looking out toward the carillon and beyond and saying to myself, “This is what a city park should look like.”
I still find myself saying that today.
One of my favorite things to do before work is to take a walk through Baker Park. It’s a great place to sort out all the crap in your head before starting the day. My favorite thing lately is to look for that big blue heron that likes to perch on top of the fountain in Culler Lake.
If you would have come down this evening, you could have enjoyed the Frederick High School marching band/Homecoming parade.
Baker Park is one of my favorite places in Frederick. My husband and I walk a loop around it at least once every weekend. And we always make a point to look for the heron, too!
But have you ever seen the big turtle that lives in the lake? It has sort of that Loch Ness monster mystery to it (I’ve seen it!).
Speaking of Baker Park, the Turkey Trot is coming up soon! My son and his other Urbana Cross Country teammates (whose varsity team BTW, won 3rd place in their class at States this past Saturday!) will be volunteering there, so our family plans to either run/walk in the race.

We can walk to Baker Park from our house. It was one of the most appealing things. Don’t get me wrong, we have to haul it over Patrick Street, but we don’t have to drive. Our dog loves us for it!
Shhhhhhhhh………..be quiet! They will hear us. They will find this town….the perfect town! They might come here. Then they would know….it is.
I concur. Baker Park is fantastic!!! I do not get there as much as I wuld like.
