Help Save Some Local Parks

2007 October 25
by Guy

This bad news comes from FMO sponsor, The Bicycle Escape

It has come to my attention that eight Maryland parks are under immediate risk of closure. Gambrill and Greenbrier are on that list. It is imperative that we as riders, voters, and activists contact our local officials to let them know that this is not acceptable. A good way to find out who your officials are is to visit this website.

It is too late for letters to be sent so use email and phone calls instead. Please do this TODAY as there is a lot at stake for anyone in the area who loves the out-of-doors.

I’ve always loved hiking at Gambrill so I hope this doesn’t come true. Thanks to FMO reader Tam for the heads up on this.

    Thanks for posting Guy.

I believe this to be a political maneuver to address the budget. I am not trying to open up a political discussion about where the money to fund parks should come from (while this is an important discussion). I simply wanted to share the information regarding the danger our parks are under. I feel that it would be unacceptable to close access to these public lands.

Next, the feds will be threatening to close Washington Monument. That said, lots of federal agencies are losing huge sums of money to the kleptocrats in Iraq and Afghanistan.

TheDude, I admittedly haven’t paid alot of attention, but I believe that the budget burden for those particular parks lie on the state, not the Gov’t. But what you’re referencing really upsets me (not your post, just how true the content is :( )

“Next, the feds will be threatening to close Washington Monument” <– In a sense, The Dude is correct. One of the parks being threatened is Washington Monument State Park, near Boonsboro. For those not familiar with this park, it’s home to the *original* Washington Monument, which was built by the citizens of Boonsboro way before the obelisk in DC was erected. Though it is the guv of our fair state rather than the feds potentially being the bad guy in this case.

And, to add to Tom’s statement: Even if this is some kind of political ploy, speaking up regarding the value of these parks is never a bad thing. They may not be in danger right now, but letting the powers-that-be know how you feel *now* could certainly help to keep these places safe and (relatively) well-funded in the future.

I’m content to wait it out. It’s just O’Malley having a hissyfit posturing.

^I guess the strikeout HTML tag doesn’t work here. It was supposed to put a line through “O’Malley” to “hissyfit.”
