Friday Free-For-All: Nacho Libre
2007 October 5
Nachos must be one of the best snack foods ever invented. Mounds of warm chips covered in melted cheese, salsa, jalapeños, meat, and other goodies of your choice.
When you have a hankering for a pile o’ delectable nachos where do you head? What Frederick restaurant is your nacho provider of choice?
Note: This fun Friday-Free-For-All was a reader request. If you have any suggestions please contact me with your ideas.

I had a hankerin’ the other day and went to La Paz . I ordered their nachos, no big pile, just a flat plate of cheese and some jalapenos. I would sure like to know where to get a heaping pile of real nachos….
We like the nachos at Brewers Alley (with chicken). Last time we were in, they changed to beef, not as good, in my opinion…
Cacique, hands-down.
I liked the nachos at Pargo’s (RIP). I’ve never had them, but I suppose if you like chili on your nachos, the ones at Hard Times would probably be good.
Personally I don’t care for meat on nachos. I like lots of cheese, onions, jalapeños, tomatoes and salsa. The problem is the toppings to chips ratio. Some chips are loaded and soggy, others bare and crisp. Someone should figure out how to fix that!
Although I love nachos, I haven’t had them in years since I try to eat healthier. I can only imagine that Mexicali Cantina would have great ones though.
Also, this is not in Frederick, but the Red Hot & Blue Chain (nearest in Rockville probably) used to be my favorite nachos.
I agree with Hawknoah, the nachos at Red Hot & Blue rock! Too bad it’s not in Frederick. I recently had a half-order of the nachos at Glory Days, and they were pretty good. I would make a bet that Cacique can make some good nachos, since the rest of the food there is great.
I agree Red Hot and Blue nachos are awesome. Didn’t there used to be a red hot and blue in Frederick a long time ago?
Guy,
The Famous Dave’s on the Golden Mile was once a RH&B, if I’m not mistaken.

Red Hot and Blue used to be where CVS on Jefferson St. is now..all for your info
For a change of pace, Hard Times Cafe does a really nice Frito Pie. Frito chips and your choice of chili. Add cheese, onions, whatever. Yum.
And I can do ok for regular nachos at Casa Rico.
The whiskey duck nachos at Monocacy Crossing are AMAZING and highly recommended!
The nachos at Hard Times Cafe are definitely the best, over the top. They are loaded. And if you like hot – they can be topped with fresh diced jalepenos.
